An economic partnership agreement is an economic arrangement that eliminates barriers to the free movement of goods, services, and investment between countries. This agreement can be considered an intermediate step between free trade area and single market in the process of economic integration. Economic partnerships are sometimes described as high standard variants of free trade agreements.
One example is the Japan-Mexico Economic Partnership Agreement.
Articles of partnership is a voluntary contract between two or among more than two persons to place their capital, labor, and skills, and corporation in business with the understanding that there will be a sharing of the profits and losses between/among partners. European legislators have ratified an Economic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and the Southern African Development Community, or SADC, as it is more commonly known. That deal covers South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho. Today MEPs will vote on the EU-South African Development Community Economic Partnership Agreement, a major trade deal with 6 southern African countries (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, Lestho and Mozambique). The agreement has been heavily criticised by development NGOs and trade unions in Europe & southern Africa. I believe that our trade policy should be coherent with our sustainable development goals and human rights obligations, allowing civil society to actively monitor and engage in enforcement. This agreement doesn't do this, therefore with a heavy heart I will be voting against.
The East Africa Community has moved the signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement to January 2017 to give enough time to assess its impact on the region.
