The Auditorio Che Guevarra is a special place in Mexico City. Seventeen years ago, students organizing a strike to keep university education free took an auditorium as a base from which to organize. The space was evicted and physically destroyed months later by police in an effort to destroy their movement, but re-occupied and rebuilt months later by a coalition of collectives, including theater, dance, and a vegan kitchen.
They have survived countless violent attacks from the state, university administration, rightwing thugs, and even authoritarian Marxist-Leninists. In the most recent eviction, paramilitary forces used batons, gas, and tasers to drive the occupiers from the Auditorium, as reprisal for hosting an international anarchist convergence that featured Alfredo Bonanno, Constantino Cavalleri, Gustavo Rodríguez. and Wolfi Landstreicher as speakers.
