STORYLINE:
US Democratic hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton was looking for a big victory over her party opponent Barack Obama in West Virginia's primary on Tuesday, although it seemed unlikely that it could turn around her faltering presidential bid.
Meanwhile, Obama, with the Democratic nomination virtually tied up, set his sights on November's general election battle.
In Charleston, West Virginia, voters lined up early on Tuesday morning to cast their votes.
Clinton supporter Betty Chandler said she was voting for the New York senator because she thinks a "woman would do a better job at being a president."
Obama supporter Richard Lindsay conceded that his chosen candidate was not going to win West Virginia, "but I don't want him to lose by too much, I want him to not get beaten and bloodied before the national or general election."
Clinton campaigned heavily in West Virginia, where polls showed her leading by as much as 40 percentage points, while Obama did little more than pay a quick stop to a state poised to shun him.
West Virginia has large numbers of working-class white voters, and very few of the black voters that have helped propel Obama to wins elsewhere.
Obama may well be a few weeks from clinching the Democratic nomination, irrespective of what happens in West Virginia or Kentucky, another Clinton stronghold that votes next week.
Only 28 delegates are at stake in West Virginia. Obama has already picked up 26 superdelegates since last Tuesday when he routed Clinton in North Carolina and narrowly lost to her in Indiana.
Accordingly, in his tone, words and itinerary, Obama is already focussing on Republican presidential candidate John McCain, almost to the exclusion of his fading Democratic rival.
He planned to spend primary night in Missouri, a bellwether in the general election.
Obama, who is vying to become the first black president, is now mathematically within reach of clinching the Democratic nomination by the end of the primary season on June 3, even if he loses half of the remaining in five states and Puerto Rico.
Neither Obama nor Clinton can reach the 2,025 delegates needed to secure the nomination through the final contests alone. That means the superdelegates - the nearly 800 party leaders and elected officials who may vote for whichever candidate they choose, regardless of the state primary or caucus results - are essential to capturing the nomination.
Clinton's best chance to slow Obama is to buy herself more time by moving back the finish line.
