Two giants of the screen in one classic old house mystery
An ex-convict named Leo Grainer lives secluded on Fog Island with the daughter of his murdered wife. Seeking to learn who murdered her, and to exact revenge on those who framed him and destroyed his business, he invites his former associates to his creepy island mansion on the pretext he may share a hidden fortune with them.
Prior to their arrival he rigs the mansion with secret passages and a trap. Then, once his guests arrive, he gives each a clue, including his step daughter and butler. This successfully pits everyone against the others and plays on their greed. What then transpires is conflict, revealed mysteries, sudden death, and an unlikely resolution.

I found this record in the collection I inherited from Walter Brockmann; a collection that contains mostly records from his high school days in Michigan when he was a member of the school jazz band. "Beggars of Life" dates from 1928, several years after Walter finished high school and the same year he left for Germany, where he spent 5 or 6 years as a journalist for the Associated Press. The picture of Walter Brockmann at the beginning was taken in 1928.
"Beggars of Life" is the theme song from the 1928 movie of the same name, starring Louise Brooks, Wallace Beery, and Richard Arlen. It was one of the early movies to include a sound track---a musical score and a few pieces of dialogue.
I have not seen the film and have only read the synopsis on the internet. So, wondering how to illustrate the music, and listening carefully to the words of the song, I found myself thinking of a certain chapter in American history: the "Dust Bowl" experience of the 1930s. During this crisis, many of the families who lost their farms to drought headed west to California to begin a new life on a "happy homestead."

The Man Who Walked Alone is a 1945 American B film romantic comedy film produced by PRC Pictures, Inc., directed by Christy Cabanne, with top-billed Dave O'Brien and Kay Aldridge, along with Walter Catlett and Guinn (Big Boy) Williams.
Karl Hajos was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score.
Plot:
During the final months of World War II, a young man is hitchhiking to the small town of Plainfield. After several failed attempts, he finally steps in front of a car driven by a young woman. She tries to go around him, but crashes and blows out a tire. He changes the tire in exchange for a ride from the hostile woman. They reveal their odd names, but nothing else about themselves: he is Marion and she is "Willie". Wilhelmina "Willie" Hammond is actually a member of a wealthy high society family, running from an arranged marriage to another socially prominent type, stolid Alvin Bailey.

Karl Hajos
Karl Hajos (1889–1950) was a Hungarian composer who worked on many film scores. Born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hajos emigrated to America and worked in Hollywood. Beginning in the late silent era, he worked on over a hundred films with a variety of directors and studios. He was one of nine composers employed on the 1931 western Fighting Caravans. In 1934 he worked on Cecil B. Demille's thriller Four Frightened People.

Beggars of Life
Beggars of Life (1928) is an early sound film with talking sequences starring Wallace Beery as a rail-riding hobo and Louise Brooks as a girl on the run. Based on an autobiography Beggars of Life by Jim Tully, the film is often regarded as Brooks's best American movie.
This is Paramount's first feature with dialogue on the soundtrack and the first time Beery's distinctive voice was recorded for a film, although the talking is extremely limited, similar to Warner Bros.'s The Jazz Singer the previous year.
Beery and Brooks had appeared together the previous year in Now We're in the Air, now considered a lost film.

The Man Who Walked Alone
The Man Who Walked Alone is a 1945 American B film comedy-drama film produced by PRC Pictures, Inc., directed by Christy Cabanne, with top-billed Dave O'Brien and Kay Aldridge, along with Walter Catlett and Guinn (Big Boy) Williams.
Plot
During the final months of World War II, Marion Scott is hitchhiking towards the small town of Plainfield (a common American town name, although fictional in the context of this film). He is offered a ride by a young woman who turns out to be Wilhelmina "Willie" Hammond, a member of a wealthy society family, running from an arranged marriage to another socially prominent type, stolid Alvin Bailey. Acting on the reported theft of Bailey's car, the police stop the pair and, after identifying the stolen car, put the pair in jail. Willie arranges their bail and takes Marion to the family mansion where, having left her keys, she tries to crawl through the window, causing the pair to be arrested again and the story to land in the headlines of the local papers. Willie initially thinks that Marion is an Army deserter, but after he explains his discharge for medical reasons, she gives him a job as the family chauffeur, even though Wiggins, the eccentric old caretaker of the estate, has misgivings. Learning of the "scandal", Willie's widowed mother, Mrs. Hammond, "old maid" Aunt Harriet, younger sister Patricia as well as family dressmaker Camille, all return from New York, along with Alvin Bailey and Alvin's physical trainer and sidekick, the big "dumb" Champ. After a series of family arguments and complications, Alvin willingly gives up Willie so she can marry Marion, who modestly did not disclose that he was a national hero as a result of wartime valor, that he was hitchhiking simply to maintain anonymity, and was now being welcomed by the mayor and the governor, and honored with a parade by Plainfield, the birthplace of his killed-in-battle wartime best friend, which will now become his adopted hometown.

An ex-convict named Leo Grainer lives secluded on Fog Island with the daughter of his murdered wife. Seeking to learn who murdered her, and to exact revenge on those who framed him and destroyed his business, he invites his former associates to his creepy island mansion on the pretext he may share a hidden fortune with them.
Prior to their arrival he rigs the mansion with secret passages and a trap. Then, once his guests arrive, he gives each a clue, including his step daughter and butler. This successfully pits everyone against the others and plays on their greed. What then transpires is conflict, revealed mysteries, sudden death, and an unlikely resolution.

I found this record in the collection I inherited from Walter Brockmann; a collection that contains mostly records from his high school days in Michigan when he was a member of the school jazz band. "Beggars of Life" dates from 1928, several years after Walter finished high school and the same year he left for Germany, where he spent 5 or 6 years as a journalist for the Associated Press. The picture of Walter Brockmann at the beginning was taken in 1928.
"Beggars of Life" is the theme song from the 1928 movie of the same name, starring Louise Brooks, Wallace Beery, and Richard Arlen. It was one of the early movies to include a sound track---a musical score and a few pieces of dialogue.
I have not seen the film and have only read the synopsis on the internet. So, wondering how to illustrate the music, and listening carefully to the words of the song, I found myself thinking of a certain chapter in American history: the "Dust Bowl" experience of the 1930s. During this crisis, many of the families who lost their farms to drought headed west to California to begin a new life on a "happy homestead."

For skies of blue, sunlight and dew,
Out where swallows are flying.
Each one longing to be led
To a happy homestead,
Where love will cry,

An ex-convict named Leo Grainer lives secluded on Fog Island with the daughter of his murdered wife. Seeking to learn who murdered her, and to exact revenge on those who framed him and destroyed his business, he invites his former associates to his creepy island mansion on the pretext he may share a hidden fortune with them.
Prior to their arrival he rigs the mansion with secret passages and a trap. Then, once his guests arrive, he gives each a clue, including his step daughter and butler. This successfully pits everyone against the others and plays on their greed. What then transpires is conflict, revealed mysteries, sudden death, and an unlikely resolution.

I found this record in the collection I inherited from Walter Brockmann; a collection that contains mostly records from his high school days in Michigan when he was a member of the school jazz band. "Beggars of Life" dates from 1928, several years after Walter finished high school and the same year he left for Germany, where he spent 5 or 6 years as a journalist for the Associated Press. The picture of Walter Brockmann at the beginning was taken in 1928.
"Beggars of Life" is the theme song from the 1928 movie of the same name, starring Louise Brooks, Wallace Beery, and Richard Arlen. It was one of the early movies to include a sound track---a musical score and a few pieces of dialogue.
I have not seen the film and have only read the synopsis on the internet. So, wondering how to illustrate the music, and listening carefully to the words of the song, I found myself thinking of a certain chapter in American history: the "Dust Bowl" experience of the 1930s. During this crisis, many of the families who lost their farms to drought headed west to California to begin a new life on a "happy homestead."

During the final months of World War II, a young man is hitchhiking to the small town of Plainfield. After several failed attempts, he finally steps in front of a car driven by a young woman. Fighting Caravans is a 1931 American Pre-Code Western film directed by Otto Brower and David Burton and starring Gary Cooper, Lili Damita, and Ernest Torrence.[1] Based on the 1929 novel Fighting Caravans by Zane Grey, the film is about a young frontier scout who helps guide a freight wagon train across the country, fighting off Indians and evil traders, while his two crusty companions try to save him from falling in love. Although billed as being based on the Zane Grey novel, the stories have little in common. The film was actually written by Agnes Brand Leahy, Edward E. Paramore, Jr., and Keene Thompson.
Fighting Caravans was remade just three years later as Wagon Wheels, a low-budget production employing extensive stock footage from Fighting Caravans and featuring Randolph Scott and Gail Patrick in the lead roles. Every character's name was changed in the remake except that of Clint Belmet, played by Cooper and Scott.

Fighting Caravans is a 1931 American Pre-Code Western film directed by Otto Brower and David Burton and starring Gary Cooper, Lili Damita, and Ernest Torrence.[1] Based on the 1929 novel Fighting Caravans by Zane Grey, the film is about a young frontier scout who helps guide a freight wagon train across the country, fighting off Indians and evil traders, while his two crusty companions try to save him from falling in love. Although billed as being based on the Zane Grey novel, the stories have little in common. The film was actually written by Agnes Brand Leahy, Edward E. Paramore, Jr., and Keene Thompson.
Fighting Caravans was remade just three years later as Wagon Wheels, a low-budget production employing extensive stock footage from Fighting Caravans and featuring Randolph Scott and Gail Patrick in the lead roles. Every character's name was changed in the remake except that of Clint Belmet, played by Cooper and Scott.
