Němec

Němec (Czech pronunciation: [ˈɲɛmɛt͡s]) is a common Czech surname, meaning German, literally "mute", or "(he) does not speak (Slavic)". From Proto-Slavic *němьcь (“foreigner, German”), from *němъ (“mute”) (Czech němý). The feminine form is Němcová (Czech pronunciation: [ˈɲɛmt͡sovaː]). Jan Němec

Jan Němec (born 12 July 1936 in Prague) is a Czech filmmaker whose most important work dates from the 1960s. Film historian Peter Hames has described him as the "enfant terrible of the Czech New Wave."

Biography

Němec's career as a filmmaker started in the late 1950s when he attended FAMU, the most prestigious institution for film training in Czechoslovakia. At this time, Czechoslovakia was a communist state subservient to the USSR and artistic and public expression was subject to censorship and government review. However, thanks largely to the failure of purely propagandist cinema in the early 1950s and the presence of important and powerful people within the Czechoslovak film industry, such as Jan Procházka, the 1960s led to an internationally acknowledged creative surge in Czechoslovak film that became known as the Czech New Wave, in which Němec played a part.

Professional

For graduation, Němec adapted a short story by Arnošt Lustig based on the author's experience of the Holocaust. Němec would return to Lustig's writing to direct the influential film Diamonds of the Night (1964) - also based on the Holocaust. The film follows the fate of two boys who escape from a transit train to a concentration camp. It is noted for its dramatic subjectivization of the experience of the Holocaust using experimental techniques, including flashbacks, simulated hallucinations and an unusual double ending that leaves the viewer in doubt as to the fate of its protagonists. It was his first major success, and while it passed the censors' reviews, it helped lay the foundation for the political movement that was coming. The film has since been called an aesthetic and technical milestone in the exploration of human experience under extreme conditions.

Petr Němec

Petr Němec (born 7 June 1957) is a former football midfielder and manager from Czechoslovakia.

Career

Club

Němec played mostly for Baník Ostrava from his native city of Ostrava. He contributed to the best period in the history of the club. During his years as a player of the club, Baník won the Czechoslovak First League in 1980 and 1981. Baník also won the Czechoslovak Cup in 1978.

National team

He was a member of the national teams that won the gold medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and the bronze medal at the 1980 UEFA European Championship.

Němec obtained a total number of five caps for his native country, between 24 March 1981 and 23 September 1981.

Coaching career

He later began a coaching career, and works in Poland since 2001.

Karel Roden

Karel Roden (born 18 May 1962) is a Czech actor, popularly known for his roles in Hellboy and The Bourne Supremacy, and his voice work in Grand Theft Auto IV.

Life and career

Roden followed his father and grandfather into acting. However, Roden first graduated from the Comprehensive Art Secondary School for Ceramics before being admitted to the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.

Roden's feature film career began almost simultaneous with his theatre work in 1984 as Honza, a medical student in the 2nd part of a trilogy entitled "How the poets are losing their illusions" (Jak básníci přicházejí o iluze), a lighthearted, comic look at life through the lives of young university students. Roden's Honza also appeared in the final installation of the trilogy, "How poets are enjoying their lives" (Jak básníkům chutná život). Other comic turns include Roden's Captain Tuma in "What Kind of Soldier" (Copak je to za vojáka), a humoristic look at life as a soldier in the socialist Czech army, the character Dragan in the action-thriller Dead Fish with Gary Oldman and Terence Stamp. In the comic crime-thriller Shut Up and Shoot Me Roden plays the hen-pecked husband hired to assassinate a grieving widow.
