1.Tsutomu Yamaguchi Tsutomu Yamaguchi (March 16, 1916 – January 4, 2010) was a survivor of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings during World War II. Although at least 160 people are known to have been affected by both bombings,[1] he is the only person to have been officially recognized by the government of Japan as surviving both explosions.[2] A resident of Nagasaki, Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on business for his employer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries when the city was bombed at 8:15 am, on August 6, 1945. He returned to Nagasaki the following day, and despite his wounds, he returned to work on August 9, the day of the second atomic bombing. That morning he was telling his supervisor how one bomb had destroyed the city, to which his supervisor told him that he was crazy, and at that moment the Nagasaki bomb detonated. 2.The Ice Woman Anna Elisabeth Johansson Bagenholm is a Swedish radiologist from Vanersborg, who survived after a skiing accident in 1999 left her trapped under a layer of ice for 80 minutes in freezing water. During this time she became a victim of extreme hypothermia and her body temperature decreased to 13.7 °C (56.7 °F), the lowest survived body temperature ever recorded in a human with accidental hypothermia. Bagenholm was able to find an air pocket under the ice, but suffered circulatory arrest after 40 minutes in the water. Bagenholm’s case has been discussed in the leading British medical journal The Lancet, and in medical textbooks. 3. The 47-Day Raft Ride from Hell Louis Zamperini had a lifelong history of turning crap into gold: When he was a juvenile criminal who constantly had to run away from things, he just honed his running ability until he represented America in the 1936 Olympics. (He also stole an important Nazi flag from under the noses of Hitler’s minions during the trip. He was that kind of guy.) In 1943, World War II was raging, and Zamperini was a pilot on the Pacific front. During a search and rescue mission, his plane crashed into a Japanese-controlled region of the ocean. Zamperini fought his way to the surface and was joined by two other survivors, Francis McNamara and Russell Phillips. A quick search of the still floating remains equipped them with two rafts, some paddles, a patch kit and a little food. All this amounted to little more than a prolonged exposure death at sea, but they decided to brave it. Sharks floated alongside them like dogs waiting for a treat, poking at the raft and even occasionally attempting to jump in. Zamperini and the others solved the problem by beating them with paddles whenever they approached. The Japanese bomber plane attacked them six times, firing and even dropping a freaking depth charge at them. When McNamara died on Day 33, the remaining two refused to resort to cannibalism and gave him an improvised funeral at sea, to the eternal joy of the beaten and battered sharks. On Day 47, the two survivors finally found land. Too bad for them that said land happened to contain a Japanese POW camp. Having survived aquatic predators, crashes, exposure, gunfire and the death of a comrade, Zamperini’s reward was two and a half years of near starvation and daily beatings at the hands of the Japanese. However, he not only persevered, but survived, and even forgave his abusers. 4. Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish Troublemaker Sometimes, in the olden days, nature was used to put people in a serious time out. In 1704, Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish troublemaker, was kicked off of an expedition ship and left on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean. All he was given was a musket, gunpowder, carpenter’s tools, a knife, a Bible and some clothing. By 1704 standards, that’s a wealth of stuff. When his clothing eventually wore out, he just made some more from the skins of wild goats, which he was also hunting and eating with a knife he made out of a barrel. Selkirk loved goats. Selkirk was there for four years and four months in solitude. During this time he hid from Spanish ships for fear of being captured, but discovered an English boat in 1709 and was rescued. and many more like these below 5.
