In remote southwest Sahara, the indigenous Tuareg tribe — variously used and discriminated against by former strongman Muammar Qaddafi — fight for their place in a post-revolutionary Libya.
Living deep in Libya’s desert near large oil fields and lucrative smuggling routes, hundreds of miles from Libya’s capital, the Tuareg find themselves impoverished and isolated on this prized land.
Nowhere is this felt more than in the oasis town of Ubari. Here the Tuareg are pitted against former neighbors in a proxy battle for assets and power, backed by government and international interests.
VICE News travels to meet the Tuareg on the front lines of Ubari and the border town of Ghat, to find out what is really happening in this rarely visited land.

The ongoing conflict in Northern Mali is rooted in the country's geography and its history. The Niger River forms the backbone of the country and it essentially splits the country in two. The arid North, also known as Azawad, is home to the nomadic Tuareg people who share ethnic ties the Berber people. The South is a relative fertile region and is home to the Mandee people, a cultural group of people that populate the West African region. Both ethnic peoples form the core of Mali's history but both played a completely different role.

Soldiers from the new Arab government now arrive by Jeep and demand the two men be turned over to them. The warrior refuses, citing the sacred laws of hospitality. The soldiers shoot dead one of the men and carry off the other -- a political foe of the new government. The warrior mounts his camel and rides off to rescue his kidnapped guest.

The Tuareg (also spelled Twareg or Touareg; endonym Imuhagh) are a Berber people with a traditionally nomadic pastoralist lifestyle. They are the principal inhabitants of the Saharan interior of North Africa.
The Tuareg language, or languages, have an estimated 1.2 million speakers. About half this number is accounted for by speakers of the Eastern dialect (Tamajaq, Tawallammat). Most Tuareg live in the Saharan parts of Niger and Mali but, being nomadic, there is constant movement across national borders, and small groups of Tuareg are also found in southeastern Algeria, southwestern Libya and northern Burkina Faso, and a small community in northern Nigeria.
The name Tuareg is derived from Targa, the Berber name of Libya's Fezzan province. The name Tuareg thus in origin designated the inhabitants of Fezzan from the perspective of the Berbers living closer to the Mediterranean coast, and was adopted from them into English, French and German during the colonial period. The Berber noun targa means "drainage channel" and by extension "arable land, garden". It designated the Wadi al-Haya area between Sabha and Ubari and is rendered in Arabic as bilad al-khayr "good land". There is a widespread Arabic folk etymology of the name, connecting tawariq "abandoned [by God]", reflecting the religious disapproval of residual animist practice among the Tuareg by orthodox Muslims.

In remote southwest Sahara, the indigenous Tuareg tribe — variously used and discriminated against by former strongman Muammar Qaddafi — fight for their place in a post-revolutionary Libya. Living deep in Libya’s desert near large oil fields and lucrative smuggling routes, hundreds of miles from Libya’s capital, the Tuareg find themselves impoverished and isolated on this prized land. Nowhere is this felt more than in the oasis town of Ubari. The ongoing conflict in Northern Mali is rooted in the country's geography and its history. The Niger River forms the backbone of the country and it essentially splits the country in two. The arid North, also known as Azawad, is home to the nomadic Tuareg people who share ethnic ties the Berber people. The South is a relative fertile region and is home to the Mandee people, a cultural group of people that populate the West African region. A tribute site to the Festival Au Desert by Joe Conte
The Festival Au Desert is held every year in the North of Mali, usually in Essakane, two hours from Timbuktu; sometimes directly at Timbuktu. It is organized by AITMA and EFES Associations together with Essakane Production. This festival seeks its origin in the big traditional Touareg festivities, as Takoubelt in Kidal and Temakannit in Timbuktu, which represented for a long time a place for decision making and exchange of information among the different communities. A report on the plight of the nomadic Tuareg people of the Sahara.
For centuries the deserts of northern Mali have sustained the Tuareg; herdsmen known as the 'blue people' of the Sahara. But, in the 1990s the combination of droughts and civil war forced most to abandon their herds and flee to refugee camps in Mauritania. Now Moussa Ag Mohammed is returning to his land; but the loss of his herds, and the remorseless advance of the desert, means his ancient lifestyle is doomed. Mohammet Ali, whose lineage can be traced back twelve hundred years, digs with pitiful tools to maintain an ever sinking well against the dusty backdrop of the desert plains. He refused to fight or flee during the war, sticking by his philosophy 'If it is hot where you are, it's even hotter somewhere else'. Orphaned Faty and her brother tend their precious market garden on a patch of sand outside the village; every last drop of water must be pumped by hand. The Tuareg are still pessimistic that their way of life will die out as their children migrate to the towns for an 'easier' lifestyle

Moussa's interview
Moussa Albaka is a Tuareg tribesman from Niger, in West Africa. For many generations, his family, of the Inadan class, has been involved in silversmithing, as well as camel caravan trading throughout the Sahara. He and the men in his family are highly skilled producers of Tuareg jewelry. Albaka creations include necklaces and amulets, bracelets, earrings, buckles, daggers, and locks, all handmade of 95% silver. The lost wax process is used, and the techniques of decoration are engraving, repoussé, and inlay with semi-precious stones, other metals, and ebony. Every year the touareg Moussa and Abdou make a long journey from Niger to Libya by dromedary. They move to sell their handcrafted goods made by their own families and they still maintain the ancient meaning of time and a traditional lifestyle. In their language Touareg people define themselves "tamazigh" which means "free men", free to live in their way and, above all, free to travel and move in the land that has always been their territory. Unfortunately their freedom is undermined by all the countries which have shared out their lands and constrained them to a forced settlement. Touareg are like foreigners in their own territory and this has caused a gradual loss of cultural identity of these people: touareg tradition, language and culture are now in danger. -

5) You have recorded 5 albums to date. Many of the songs comment on the situation in your homecountry Mali. Could you tell us how your message changed from album to album?
Our songs are talking about where we come from, how we live, some are about animals, some about love and others about war or social problems, our message is to witness what we see today. I am not sure it has changed. In our words you will find no political statement, because we wonder where is the way for Tuareg people. We just witness what we see and feel. And we hope something will come through one day. I don't know what. I don't know when.
6) Mali has seen an ongoing crisis in the last years? From your perspective how did you feel about what went on? Could you start at the moment when Lybia collapsed after Ghadaffi was killed.
For me, war in Lybia came suddenly and became a heavy moment. Many Tuaregs from North-Mali had brothers or cousins in South-Lybia, who were supporting a lot their families in Mali by sending money for example. It was a bad surprise to see that maybe our main support since two decades was failing. You know, I am only a musician, and I react mostly like the people who cannot always understand what is happening. Later on, the Islamists who seemed to take the power in North-Mali, began to forbid music and many other things. Another very bad surprise. How should we be able to live without music ? It is such a great thing for all of us. Music is pure life in the desert. Music is like freedom.
7) Did you have high hopes when the MNLA declared a state of Azawad? What happend afterward?
I didn't really hear about it. What I saw was the war coming between North and South-mali. And after that, many terrorists came to North-Mali. We could watch the situation, but what could we understand really ?
8) Where did the Islamists come from? Who are they? Why did they come? What needs to be done about them?
They came from neighbouring countries. Maybe they were already nearby for some of them. Some were from East Africa. I don't know what we can do about it, I do not understand exactly why they came. But they cannot change our lives like that.
9) The new record is called Alone, what does the title symbolize for you? What are you trying to bring across? Does it – symbolically or directly – talk about the state of Mali?
The real title that Diara gave to this new album is „Ténéré“. Diara explained that in this case, Ténéré was meaning „Alone“. Alone for all reasons I suppose. Because things are never like we expect them to be. And we do not know what will come after. Maybe Diara also means that the Tuaregs have been let Alone with their problems in the North-Mali.
10) Could you talk about the different songs? Some like f.e. Karambani or Itilla ihene Dagg … seem to talk about things going on that annoy you. What do you see happening at the moment and what are you adressing in your songs?
In „Karambani“, I am talking to the all world, not only to Tuareg people. Because now that I travel, I know it is a little bit the same everywhere in the world, liars are everywhere. And in the end, because this, the people never gets anything, except suffering. This is nastiness. „Itilla ihene dagh aïtma“ is different. Diara is talking directly to Tuareg people, probably to the leaders.
11) What does the country need now?
Peace. Development in North-Mali to bring jobs. Schools. Why is this not possible?
12) How do you feel when you go to Bamako to apply for a visa? Are you comfortable?
Last month was my first time in Bko since 4 years ago. I felt the same than before, I was very happy to meet old friends there. Yes I felt comfortable because I have many friends in Bamako. But we didn't get out so much.
13) You come from a different generation as Diara – like he grew up as an Ishumar - do your perspectives on what is going on differ?
Diara is older than me. He is very experienced and he advices me. I listen to him.
14) What do you want people in the rest of the world to know about Terakaft? What does the band stand for?
We want the world to listen to our music and to dance with us. We wish that they understand our words and get the feeling that they understand who the Tuaregs are. Because we are proud of our culture. Terakaft stands to share it with the world.

Legendary poet guitarists and soul rebels from the southern Sahara desert, this documentary extract features performances of '63' under a tree in the desert 'Matadjem Yinmixan' in a tent in Tessalit, as well as a short interview with founder Ibrahim.
In 1963, shortly after independence, the Touaregs of Mali rise up against their new masters. This revolt is brutally suppressed. It is followed by terrible droughts which force thousands of refugees from Mali, Niger and Libya out on the road. It's in the pain of exile that the Teshoumara is born. This movement proclaims the existence but also the necessary evolution of the Touareg people. This is when the guitars of the group Tinariwen first began to be heard.

The mutineers, who referred to themselves as the National Committee for the Restoration of Democracy and State, cited the failure of the government to put down a separatist rebellion in the north as their motive.
Dozens of people have been killed in the uprising by Tuareg nomads seeking to carve out a homeland in Mali's northern dessert region.
Hours before the TV address there was sporadic shooting near the presidential palace in the capital, Bamako. It is not clear if there have been any casualties in the coup attempt.
The army has long complained of a lack of arms and resources to tackle the rebels, who have been bolstered by heavily armed fellow Tuaregs returning from Libya's civil war.
The whereabouts of President Amadou Toumani are unkown, but a government spokesman said he was in a secure location. Tourmani was due to step down after elections next month.

William "Billy" Garland (born August 5, 1949) to African American parents. He was a black activist belonging to the Black Panther Party, maintained a relationship with Afeni Shakur (also affiliated with the party) and is the biological father of Lesane Parish Crooks, who is better known as Tupac Shakur. Garland did very little to help raise his son, only seeing him a few times until Tupac was around the age of 5. He didn't see Shakur again until he starred in the movie 'Juice' in 1992. He later visited Shakur in Bellevue Hospital when he was shot in 1994. Shakur was told by his Mother that his father was dead. Garland claimed that The Notorious B.I.G. approached him at the hospital while visiting Shakur, and he believed that he wasn't involved in the shooting. After Tupac's death, Afeni and Billy sent his blood to Long Beach Genetics. A laboratory tested Shakur's DNA and found out the probability of Afeni and Billy 99.97% parentage. Also after Tupac Shakur's death, Billy Garland took Afeni Shakur to court, claiming half of Tupac's estate, but was denied. The case ended in a settlement of around $540,000 plus legal fees, which totaled just over $350,000.[4] Four days after Shakur's death, Garland told Rolling Stone in an interview that he wanted people to focus on the rapper's accomplishments. "My son is dead, and he don't deserve to be talked about like some common criminal," he said. "He wasn't perfect, but he did do some great things in a little bit of time."
