Tom Tresser is a self-styled creativity champion and defender of the commons. He's been a Shakespearean actor, Internet start-up refugee and community organizer. He ran for Cook County Board President in 2010 on a campaign of reform, innovation and social justice. He teaches classes on creativity and social change at the Stuart School of Business. Currently, he is involved in creating his 13th nonprofit enterprise - The CivicLab, a store front space for civic engagement.
About the talk
Tom Tresser proposes the idea of a Gift Economy. The economy gains momentum when people start to offer something that they have as a gift, in the forms of product, service or cash, free to the community without any strings attached.
About TEDx:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

We are a dedicated team working for the vision of a gift economy network that connects people and sustainable communities - brings together their offers and needs and facilitates the exchange of knowledge, services and resources.
This year we've been co-organizing http://community-tours.org and http://www.communitiesconvergence.org, all based on gift-economy.
Our goal for the next year is to become self-sustainable and this step needs an investment.
In 2015 we plan to:
- develop the online platform until we have a beta version
- offer support for communities and pioneers to create accounts so people can find out about each other's offers and needs
- strengthen the collaboration with existing networks, like GEN, ic.org, Project Nuevo Mundo and caravans like Comun-Tierra
- grow the network by helping the organization of community-tours and communities convergences.
- host a hackathon for programmers as a first step towards making an open-source community
- share the gift of giving in different events
Please support us to continue our work!
This video was a great effort of many volunteers.
Thank you:
Ian Delú: Filming

Boaz Balachsan: Animation

A little documentation about our first Community-Tours 2014, collecting experiences with communities in a gift-economy network.
We visited sustainable communities and ecovillages around Europe on our path from the Urban Communities-Convergence Berlin to the Danube Communities-Convergence Romania.
We did this, to learn about sustainable ways of living, but also to bring experts, knowledge, experiences, products and resources to where they are needed. Like this we created win-win relationships and started a network of trust and support.
We are mapping these places with their needs on our website: http://community-tours.org
You can see on the community profiles what you can offer, when you want to visit them.
Also you can find other travelers on the platform and join a tour!

I am doing an experiment in living as a musician within a gift economy. I am in my sixth month. This audio recording was a reflection for myself that I never intended to share publicly. I changed my mind, however, as I was reminded that my most powerful gift to the world is my authentic heart. With my heart open and ready to be vulnerable, I never have to do life alone.
I make reference to the "fifth dimensional tools" of joy, trust, and gratitude. I have learned that living in a gift economy within a monetary-based society requires a specific focus, primarily using these three tools. They seem to supercede three-dimensional monetary laws, the same way that the law of lift supersedes the law of gravity. I do not seek to replace the security of money in the bank. I certainly want that. I simply desire to build a strong foundation within myself to feel good and at peace no matter what external catastrophic events may ever arise in life.
Of note, a few hours after I recorded this audio, as I was specifically wondering how I was going to feed myself that night, I was gifted with a dinner fit for a queen.
