Sights and scenes from the Festival in the Desert on Jan. 7. 2011 in Timbuktu, Mali. The festival, which is based on the traditional gatherings of the Tuareg people, began in 2001 and now features international as well as local artists.
THE LAST SONG BEFORE THE WAR is a feature-length documentary that captures the inspiring rise and uncertain future of Mali's annual Festival in the Desert. Told through stunning high definition footage captured at the 2011 festival, the film is a lyrical road trip to legendary Timbuktu to hear Grammy-award winning musicians play their hearts out in the dunes of the Sahara. Shockingly, the music and the festival were silenced in 2012 due to the violent occupation of Northern Mali by extremists, destabilizing the entire Sahel region. To date, the festival and hundreds of thousands of refugees remain in exile. The Festival in the Desert http://www.thefestivalinthedesert.com A tribute site to the Festival Au Desert by Joe Conte The Festival Au Desert is held every year in the North of Mali, usually in Essakane, two hours from Timbuktu; sometimes directly at Timbuktu. It is organized by AITMA and EFES Associations together with Essakane Production. This festival seeks its origin in the big traditional Touareg festivities, as Takoubelt in Kidal and Temakannit in Timbuktu, which represented for a long time a place for decision making and exchange of information among the different communities. At the beginning, there were songs and touareg dances, poetries, camel rides and games

The famous 'Festival au Desert', more than ten years was held at Timbuktu was in April 2012 forced to quit after the violent raid by Islamists in northern Mali. Along with the 'Festival sur le Niger' in Segou and the desert festival in southern Morocco 'Taragalte' pull these three festivals as a cultural peace caravan through the world with a passionate cry for peace. https://www.youtube.com/c/AfrikafestivalHertmeVideo

Bassekou Kouyate releases new song and video in support of the festival au désert celebrating its comeback in 2015. The festival will take place in form of a Cultural Peace Caravan from January 23 to feb 14th in cooperation with the Festival sur le Niger de Segou and Festival Taragalte of Morrocco. Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni ba are looking forward to playing this special comeback edition. When the crisis in the North east of Mali reached its peak Bassekou sat down one morning with an urge to write a song about what was troubling his mind: people were starting to blame the crisis in the country on ethnic differences. The song Désert nianafing means longing for the desert. It expresses his love for the desert and is a symbolic reminder that the North and its people are a dear part of Mali....
Tinariwen featured here in 2012 with Harmonica Blues Rocker JeConte, is a Grammy Award-winning group of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali. The shimmering sands and contoured desolation of the Thar desert have cradled the age-old folk tradition of the Langas and Manganiars, the two communities of professional folk musicians from Rajasthan. From songs about daily chores to monsoons to songs of occasions, Rajasthani folk music has picked our tastes for many years. Here too the love song Lavarji and Nimbuda are a thrill. This collection has a combination of all these and gives a good gamut of Rajasthani folk tradition. Track: Gorband Music Label: 1992 Living Media India Ltd.
