2015_2005_10_years_joesgarageFor 10 years, Joe’s Garage organizes political action, film and debate evenings, discussions and demonstrations. Everyone is welcome whether it’s for advice in precarious housing, employment and other life issues or for a bowl of soup, a good conversation, nice music or a free raincoat from the Giveaway Shop.

As known, there is a desperate shortage of housing in Amsterdam. That is, we believe, generally not because of a lack of actual buildings but due to shortcomings of housing policy, power struggles in politics and greed in this capitalist capital. None of the 50 shades of the cabinet has ever really been able to solve this urgent problem.
Therefore we squat houses. After all, in hollow promises, one can’t live from pretty words and symbolic politics.

Joe’s Garage is also a squat but so much more than just that. Joe’s Garage is an autonomous, political, social and cultural center; 100% run by volunteers and without subsidy. Joe’s Garage shows what’s possible when people collaborate, share and exchange ideas, all in solidarity with each other. For 10 years now.

We, along with many of you, witnessed the neighborhood change significantly in the last 10 years. From a working-class neighborhood with many squats, social housing and Turkish grocery stores to a neat neighborhood with lots of expensive apartments and trendy coffee shops.
This change left no one unaffected. Some are delighted with the nicely refurbished homes, others miss the days you could still drink coffee for 1 Euro.. We find the conversation between people about this matter important and interesting to conduct.

Today we celebrate the autonomy, solidarity and freedom that we took 10 years ago and still cherish every day. Hasta la Victoria Siempre! Überhaupt und Jetzt! Love and Rage! And more of such…

10 jaar Joe’s Garage

2015_2005_10_years_joesgarageAl 10 jaar lang organiseert Joe’s Garage politieke acties, film- en debatavonden, discussies en demonstraties.Iedereen is hier welkom; of het nou voor advies bij precaire woon-, werk- en andere levensvragen is of voor een kop soep, een goed gesprek, een mooi concert of een gratis regenjas uit de weggeefwinkel.

Zoals bekend is er een schrijnend woningtekort in Amsterdam. Dat ligt, volgens ons, over het algemeen niet aan een tekort aan daadwerkelijke panden maar aan tekortkomingen van het woonbeleid, machtsstrijd in de politiek en hebzucht in deze kapitalistische hoofdstad. Geen van de 50 tinten van het kabinet heeft dit urgente probleem ooit echt kunnen aanpakken.
Daarom kraken wij woningen. In holle beloften, mooie woorden en symboolpolitiek kun je immers niet wonen.

Joe’s Garage is dan ook een kraakpand maar veel meer dan dat. Joe’s Garage is een autonoom, politiek, sociaal en cultureel centrum; 100% gerund door vrijwilligers en zonder subsidie. Joe’s Garage laat zien wat er mogelijk is als mensen samen werken, delen, ideeën uitwisselen en solidair zijn met elkaar. Al 10 jaar lang.

We hebben, samen met velen van u, de buurt de afgelopen 10 jaar flink zien veranderen. Van een echte volksbuurt met vele kraakpanden, sociale huurwoningen en Turkse groentewinkels tot een chique stadswijk met heel veel koopwoningen en hippe koffietentjes.
Die verandering heeft velen niet onberoerd gelaten. Sommigen zullen blij zijn met de keurig opgeknapte woningen, anderen missen de tijd dat je voor een euro nog ergens koffie kon drinken. Het gesprek daarover tussen alle verschillende mensen in de buurt is belangrijk en vinden wij interessant om te voeren

Vandaag vieren wij de strijdvaardigheid, de solidariteit en de vrijheid die wij 10 jaar geleden namen en nog steeds elke dag koesteren. Hasta la Victoria Siempre! Uberhaupt und Jetzt! Love and Rage! En meer van dattum…..

Oproep tot 1 oktober demonstratie: Recht op Stad!

RECHT_OP_STAD_demo_1_october_2015Hardhandige massa-arrestatie van 150 sympathisanten tijdens ontruiming Schijnheilig goedgekeurd door Amsterdams Hof. ‘Verzet’ maakt gehele demonstratie illegaal.

Het demonstratierecht lijkt een ernstige slag te zijn toegebracht: het Hof stelt dat manifestaties automatisch illegaal zijn wanneer de politie van mening is dat niet protest maar ‘verzet kennelijk het doel’ is. Het Hof heeft hieruit geconcludeerd dat de massa-arrestatie door de politie tijdens de ontruiming van het kraakpand Schijnheilig was toegestaan. Een cassatie is in navolging van de uitspraak ingesteld door de advocaat Willem Jebbink namens de vijf procederende sympathisanten die destijds waren opgepakt.

Schijnheilig: ‘We zijn verbijsterd dat het Amsterdamse hof de willekeur van de politie verkiest boven het demonstratierecht. Wij demonstreren niet om ‘verzet met kennelijk doel’ te plegen, maar om het geven van een duidelijk geluid; het geluid van vrije cultuur, van zelfbeschikking, van antikapitalisme; het geluid van een stad voor en door haar bewoners.’

Wij demonstreren tegen een stad dat is overgeleverd aan schimmige vastgoed-deals door, zoals Van der Laan beschreven ‘Egyptenaren op de Zeedijk’ en ‘puissant rijke Chinezen en Russen’ in de hele stad. We demonstreren tegen een stad dat het college van B&W wordt overgeleverd aan vigerende gentrificatie en exploitatie! We demonstreren tegen het omarmen van het massa-toerisme. We demonstreren tegen het laten stikken van vitale, autonome locaties als Villa Friekens, Bajesdorp of het ADM!

We demonstreren voor een stad vóór en dóór haar bewoners! Voor Recht op Stad!

RIGHT TO A SOCIAL HOUSING POLICY

The city belongs to all of us, including to the poor and to the refugees. The city council needs to focus on making the biggest medley so not only people or organizations with money, but everyone has a chance to settle at their place of choice. The heart of a city is essential part of making a city livable and therefore cheap rents for housing and shops should be preserved.

RIGHT TO COMMONALTY

A city exists out of neighborhoods. This should be neighborhoods made able by its inhabitants, neighborhoods where the grocery store, bakery and local tailor should have a place. Amsterdam is no brand, but a city where people cohabit.

RIGHT TO KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION

The city is a hub of knowledge acquisition and dissemination. The city needs to stand firm for its students and point universities to their role: focussing on quality of education and phase out real estate speculation! Less power to the management and more power to teachers and students!

RIGHT TO AUTONOMY & CULTURE

The city is a thousand villages. The city is nothing without her inhabitants. The City is alive! It doesn’t survive by sweeping and encapsulating, but by letting her fray and bloom! The city needs to scale down and support autonomous folks and local organisations that take care of their neighbourhood. This will bring a faster and more direct result than regulation and criminalization will ever amount to. The city remains vital by giving space to experiment and to fail. And give everyone a chance to try again.

RIGHT TO DEMONSTRATE AND RESIST

The right to demonstrate; especially the city needs to be a space where one can express their beliefs, without fear of repression. Government and law enforcement should not be able to criminalize occupations and squatting. They have to understand that resistance is a natural right and evictions of squats and demonstrators should not harshly be beaten down and arrested.

RIGHT TO A RIGHTEOUS AMSTERDAM

In short: Right to City = Right to a righteous city with an eye for culture, activism, diversity and fair chances for all!

De Bond Precaire Woonvormen (BPW), de specialist op het gebied van tijdelijke huisvesting, start op zaterdag 21 april de campagne ‘Weiger de controleur zet een ander slot op je deur’. Door heel Nederland zullen bewoners van verschillende anti-kraakbureaus hun voordeurslot vervangen door een eigen slot. Daarmee reclaimen ze hun recht op privacy en huisvrede dat geschonden wordt door het anti-kraakbureau
Zo werd de BPW benaderd door Gabrielle uit Amsterdam. Gabrielle woont al 5 jaar op basis van een anti-kraakcontract in een woning van woningbouwcorporatie Rochdale aan het Afrikanerplein in Amsterdam Oost. De eerste kraak

Deze korte film gaat over de eerste kraak in Nederland, die plaatsvond op 28 februari 1969 aan de Wijttenbachstraat in Amsterdam. Aan de hand van herinneringen van kunstenaar Tjebbe van Tijen en fotograaf Pieter Boersma, beide nauw betrokken bij het opzetten en uitvoeren van de kraak, wordt duidelijk waarom juist deze kraakactie gezien kan worden als de eerste in zijn soort. Waarin waren deze krakers vernieuwend en wat is hun invloed geweest?

– in a just society the costs should be distributed on the basis of ability to pay, and the benefits based on need;
– such a society can only be brought about through a collective effort by all those involved;
– such an effort can only succeed if all those involved take full responsibility for this common goal, and for each other.”

W hat is Woningbouwvereniging Soweto?
Woningbouwvereniging Soweto is a housing association that was established in 2006 by a number of Amsterdam housing activists. The original catalyst for its creation was the attempt in 2006-7 to legalise Pretoriusstraat 28 in Amsterdam Oost. In a nutshell Soweto is an idealistic housing association which aims to be a legal and democratic
framework within which multiple solidarity based housing projects, such as legalized squats, can operate together simultaneously, thus increasingtheir political and economic strength.
Why Soweto?
Multiple factors led to the birth of Soweto. Firstly, a general disillusionment with the manner in which mainstream housing associations have betrayed their social founding principles, and the general shift in housing policy towards privatization. Secondly, the realisation that in the past many legalized squats have, after legalization, become economially and politically isolated from the housing struggle from which they emerged, and the desire to prevent this “drain” of political and economic capital. Thirdly, the desire to create a housing association based on DIY principles and grass-roots organisation.

Eight key principles of Soweto
1.Pro-renting. Creation of affordable, stable rental housing. Promotion of renting as desirable housing form;advantage of renting is the political and personal freedom that stems from low living costs, versus the dominant discourse of buying own house.
2.Soweto remains owner of the building. Users of building rent it from Soweto as group or groups (e.g. living groups, user groups, or combinations thereof), not as individual renters.
3.Strong preference for user/tenant groups with idealistic internal organisation. Promotion of communal forms of living (living groups). Preference for living groups that endorse the principles of Soweto. Preference for non-commercial/ idealistic public spaces.
4.Re-use of resources.  Realized housing projects to be used to leverage more favourable financial terms when acquiring new buildings.
5.Re-use of acquired expertise. In this way skills that are learned during a legalisation or acquirement project, are not lost after completion of the project.
6.To enable and encourage a high-level of involvement from tenants/users of the houses. Strong involvement of users/tenants at all stages of the process, both during legalisation/acquisation and beyond. Keeping (building) costs low via DIY: “zelfwerkzaamheid”.
7.Political safeguards. Democratic association structure. Prospective renters/ tenants become members of Soweto. Political safeguards to prevent privatization: users/tenants of Soweto houses limited to 40% of the votes at annual general meetings to prevent “privatization coups”. Ambition to have many members that do not work/ live in the houses.
8.Multiple funding sources. Mortgages, gifts/low-interest loans from the community and other options.
