HISTORY:
In 1768 a Boston Company known as the Pejepscot Proprietors granted land for a settlement to be called Lewiston on the east side of the Androscoggin River at Twenty-Mile Falls. The recipients were Jonathan Bagley and Moses Little of Newbury, Massachusetts.
Settlement began two years later when Paul Hildreth and his family arrived. Hildreth's log cabin was a short distance below the falls and he established a ferry service nearby. Other families followed. By 1790, Lewiston was home to 532 persons. Lewiston was incorporated as a town on February 18, 1795.
Water power was harnessed by a timber dam by 1808-1809 and a canal was built. The town grew to 1,549 inhabitants by 1830. The first bridge was built in 1823. Although there were mills by the falls, the present downtown Lewiston was still occupied by a farm, a few dwellings, and a school house.
As early as 1836, efforts were made to build dams, canals, and mills, but capital was lacking. Boston investors later made the developments possible. Each of the 1850 and 1860 census counts showed a doubling of the size of Lewiston.The DeWitt Hotel was built around 1854 and the Maine Seminary, later Bates College was established in 1855. After being chartered as a city in 1861, the city prospered during the Civil War, as the demand for textiles was high and steady.
Lewiston's first mayor, Jacob Barker Ham, took office in 1863. Subsequent mayors went on to higher office. William P. Frye went to Congress and served as President pro tem of the U.S. Senate, twice being next in line for the presidency due to vacancies in the office of Vice President. Alonzo Garcelon, mayor in 1871, became governor of Maine in 1879. Another mayor-turned-congressman was Daniel McGillicuddy.
An impressive city building was constructed in 1873. The current Lewiston City Hall replaced it after a fire in 1890. The Music Hall was built in 1877, with the aim of being "the best opera house east of Boston." It was renovated between 1999 and 2003 to house the Lewiston District courthouse.
A spur from Lewiston by the Canadian National Railway introduced competition to the Maine Central Railroad and freight rates dropped. Starting in the 1870s, the Grand Trunk Station became the arrival point for thousands of French Canadians. Many settled in the area between Lisbon Street and the river, in blocks built by the mills or in an area called "Little Canada." By 1880, the population had risen to 19,083, a tenfold increase in 40 years.
The oldest Roman Catholic church in Lewiston is St. Joseph's Church, built on Main Street between 1863 and 1867. The first parochial school was established in 1882. The first teachers were Sisters of Charity until replaced by the Ladies of Sion in 1892. St. Peter's Church served the French parish, was replaced by Saints Peter and Paul Church, built 1905-1938. St. Dominic's High School was founded in 1941 in the clubhouse of L'Association St. Dominique.
Lewiston High School opened in 1850 and moved into a brick
building on Main Street in 1859. A fire company was started in 1849. The Grey Nuns organized the first hospital, St. Mary's, which was dedicated in 1889. Central Maine General Hospital was established in 1891 with thirty beds in two houses on Main Street.
Due to increased competitions from textile concerns in the South and overseas, the textile industry in Lewiston has gradually declined. A variety of new industries have grownup to replace it. The Geiger Brothers, publishers of The Farmer's Almanac, brought their printing business to Lewiston in 1955.
Today 36 592 people live in Lewiston (2010 census).

Lewiston, Maine
Lewiston is a city in Androscoggin County in Maine, and the second-largest city in the state. The population was 36,592 at the 2010 census. It is one of two principal cities of and included within the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine metropolitan New England city and town area and the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area, which as of 2006 census estimates has a combined population of 107,702. It is also part of the extended Portland-Lewiston-South Portland, Maine combined statistical area, which has a combined population 621,219 as of 2006 estimates.
A former mill town, it is located in south-central Maine, at the falls of the Androscoggin River, across from Auburn. Lewiston and Auburn are often considered a single entity and referred to as Lewiston–Auburn, colloquially abbreviated as L-A or L/A. They have a combined population of 59,647 people. Together, Lewiston-Auburn is somewhat smaller than Maine's largest city, Portland (excluding its own suburbs). Lewiston is home to Bates College, the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, the University of Southern Maine's Lewiston-Auburn College, and two significant regional general hospitals: Central Maine Medical Center and Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center.

Maine (
i/ˈmeɪn/; French: État du Maine) is a state in New England, in the United States. Maine is the 39th most extensive and the 42nd most populous of the 50 U.S. states. It is bordered by New Hampshire to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec to the east and north, respectively. Maine is the northernmost state in the contiguous United States east of the Great Lakes. It is known for its jagged, rocky coastline; low, rolling mountains; heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways; and also its seafood cuisine, especially lobster and clams. In spite of its maritime position, it has a continental climate even in coastal areas such as its largest city, Portland. The state capital is Augusta with a population of 19,136 (2010), making it the third least-populous state capital (after Montpelier, Vermont and Pierre, South Dakota) in the nation.
For thousands of years, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. At the time of European encounter, several Algonquian-speaking peoples inhabited the area. The first European settlement in Maine was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years.

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel
Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel is a monthly sports newsmagazine on HBO that debuted on April 2, 1995. The show was "spawned by the fact that sports have changed dramatically, that it's no longer just fun and games, and that what happens off the field, beyond the scores, is worthy of some serious reporting," according to Bryant Gumbel, the host.

Format
Each has four stories, all of which are about society and sports, famous athletes, or problems afflicting sports. The show also has investigative reports, interviews, and interesting stories that don't necessarily occur in the professional leagues. This show goes beyond traditional sports reporting, like box scores and statistics, and presents exclusive stories that other networks don't usually cover.
The show has been honored with 26 Sports Emmy Awards and won a Peabody Award in 2012.
Real Sports was the inspiration for two other HBO shows, On the Record with Bob Costas and Costas Now.

HISTORY:
In 1768 a Boston Company known as the Pejepscot Proprietors granted land for a settlement to be called Lewiston on the east side of the Androscoggin River at Twenty-Mile Falls. The recipients were Jonathan Bagley and Moses Little of Newbury, Massachusetts.
Settlement began two years later when Paul Hildreth and his family arrived. Hildreth's log cabin was a short distance below the falls and he established a ferry service nearby. Other families followed. By 1790, Lewiston was home to 532 persons. Lewiston was incorporated as a town on February 18, 1795.
Water power was harnessed by a timber dam by 1808-1809 and a canal was built. The town grew to 1,549 inhabitants by 1830. The first bridge was built in 1823. Although there were mills by the falls, the present downtown Lewiston was still occupied by a farm, a few dwellings, and a school house.
As early as 1836, efforts were made to build dams, canals, and mills, but capital was lacking. Boston investors later made the developments possible. Each of the 1850 and 1860 census counts showed a doubling of the size of Lewiston.The DeWitt Hotel was built around 1854 and the Maine Seminary, later Bates College was established in 1855. After being chartered as a city in 1861, the city prospered during the Civil War, as the demand for textiles was high and steady.
Lewiston's first mayor, Jacob Barker Ham, took office in 1863. Subsequent mayors went on to higher office. William P. Frye went to Congress and served as President pro tem of the U.S. Senate, twice being next in line for the presidency due to vacancies in the office of Vice President. Alonzo Garcelon, mayor in 1871, became governor of Maine in 1879. Another mayor-turned-congressman was Daniel McGillicuddy.
An impressive city building was constructed in 1873. The current Lewiston City Hall replaced it after a fire in 1890. The Music Hall was built in 1877, with the aim of being "the best opera house east of Boston." It was renovated between 1999 and 2003 to house the Lewiston District courthouse.
A spur from Lewiston by the Canadian National Railway introduced competition to the Maine Central Railroad and freight rates dropped. Starting in the 1870s, the Grand Trunk Station became the arrival point for thousands of French Canadians. Many settled in the area between Lisbon Street and the river, in blocks built by the mills or in an area called "Little Canada." By 1880, the population had risen to 19,083, a tenfold increase in 40 years.
The oldest Roman Catholic church in Lewiston is St. Joseph's Church, built on Main Street between 1863 and 1867. The first parochial school was established in 1882. The first teachers were Sisters of Charity until replaced by the Ladies of Sion in 1892. St. Peter's Church served the French parish, was replaced by Saints Peter and Paul Church, built 1905-1938. St. Dominic's High School was founded in 1941 in the clubhouse of L'Association St. Dominique.
Lewiston High School opened in 1850 and moved into a brick
building on Main Street in 1859. A fire company was started in 1849. The Grey Nuns organized the first hospital, St. Mary's, which was dedicated in 1889. Central Maine General Hospital was established in 1891 with thirty beds in two houses on Main Street.
Due to increased competitions from textile concerns in the South and overseas, the textile industry in Lewiston has gradually declined. A variety of new industries have grownup to replace it. The Geiger Brothers, publishers of The Farmer's Almanac, brought their printing business to Lewiston in 1955.
Today 36 592 people live in Lewiston (2010 census).

The Village of Lewiston is a great place to live, work and visit. This quaint and vibrant village is home to some of the best restaurants and unusual retail shops in Western New York. Fishing is great and historical buffs will find early history of New York, and Underground Railroad trails. Musical concerts can be found often during the summer in the village and at Artpark. The Village is home to many festivals celebrating food, fine arts, gardens, historic houses, jazz, harvest and the Annual Peach Festival. For a full schedule of activities in the area visit.

The crust remains crispy, the sauce is pleasantly seasoned and they are generous with high quality cheese and toppings. Although the crust is crispy, it's not so thin that you end up wearing it. There's a just an ever so slightly fluffy inside to it that makes this an all around very satisfying pizza. I have a new 3 month old beautiful baby daughter, so my wife and I need a lot of help, and people are happy to help us. Our natural instinct is to help one another, it's what has made our species succeed. Outside of Hour Exchange we live in an artificial economy that values scarcity and so scarcity is rewarded and perpetuated. Imagine if we valued abundance? If we valued those things which we all share, our common humanity. Hour Exchange values not just what I have to offer, but what I need, and so even though I am in debt to my community I can feel prosperous.
When my wife was pregnant we got parenting classes and my wife saw a chiropractor for hours. We paid our midwife part in hours and after Penny was born people made meals for us. These are not little things, when you feel you are losing your mind from lack of sleep, that home cooked meal is priceless. And when someone else in the community needs a home cooked meal, maybe they are recovering from a trip to the hospital, we know where they are coming from and we will be there to help them.
Millions of people are unemployed right now and millions more are underemployed. But if you look around your community there is no shortage of work that needs to be done. We can't wait for Washington or Wallstreet. In the words of Edgar Cahn the founder of the Time Banking movement, "we have what we need if we use what we have." And what we have is each other.'

• National -- Former President Theodore Roosevelt rode No. 14 on August 18, 1914
• State -- Only surviving railway equipment from the PLI

Maine's finest and fastest electric railway, the Portland Lewiston Interurban, commenced regular operation on Thursday, July 2, 1914, its 29.8 miles of main track extending almost due north from a connection with the Cumberland County Power & Light Company-leased Portland Railroad Company in Portland through West Falmouth, West Cumberland, Gray and the town of New Gloucester to Auburn and a connection with the Mechanic Falls line of the Lewiston, Augusta & Waterville Street Railway.
Because of interurban promoter W. Scott Libbey's desire that each car have a distinct personality and not be identified just by number, all six were named after flowers.
No. 10 was the Arbutus; No. 14, the Narcissus.
Each of the original cars was 46 feet long overall and 8 ft. ¾ in. wide and had steam coach roofs and straight vertically sheathed sides. There were seven arch windows -- six double sashes and one single sash -- on each side, the sashes being arranged to lift.
The arches above the sashes and the windows in the roof clerestory were glazed with ornamental leaded glass. The exterior livery was Pullman green with gray roofs and dark red doors and trim and gold leaf numbers and lettering.
The main passenger compartment in each car was 30 feet long and contained twenty 19 in. by 31-in. reversible transverse seats and two 18 in. by 32-in. longitudinal seats upholstered with green plush and accommodating 44 passengers. The six-foot smoking section had two 18 in.-wide leather-covered longitudinal seats for eight riders. According to the Electric Railway Journal of Sept. 25, 1915, the center isle in the main compartment was 24 in.-wide while that in the smoking section was 4 ft. 10 in. wide, the two areas being separated by a bulkhead having a central sliding door with ribbed glass panels. The interior finish was mahogany with ebony and holly decorations, and interlocking rubber tiling was used on the floors.
Quoting from the Journal:
"Heiwado reversible seats are used and the cars are fitted with baggage racks. The end of each seat is provided with a leather ticket holder, eight holders also being attached to the inside sheathing, with four more in the smoking compartment.
(Although the cars were equipped for double end operation, they normally were run with the smoking compartment forward.
Some of the clerestory stained glass and frames for the Narcissus were provided by its sister interurban, No. 10 Arbutus, via the Shoreline Trolley Museum in Branford, CT.
After the closing of the PLI in 1933, The Arbutus was preserved as a completes operable vehicle and moved to the property of W. Scott Libbey's daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Libbey Anthony, in Camp Ellis, Saco, Maine until it was scrapped during WWll.

HISTORY:
In 1768 a Boston Company known as the Pejepscot Proprietors granted land for a settlement to be called Lewiston on the east side of the Androscoggin River at Twenty-Mile Falls. The recipients were Jonathan Bagley and Moses Little of Newbury, Massachusetts.
Settlement began two years later when Paul Hildreth and his family arrived. Hildreth's log cabin was a short distance below the falls and he established a ferry service nearby. Other families followed. By 1790, Lewiston was home to 532 persons. Lewiston was incorporated as a town on February 18, 1795.
Water power was harnessed by a timber dam by 1808-1809 and a canal was built. The town grew to 1,549 inhabitants by 1830. The first bridge was built in 1823. Although there were mills by the falls, the present downtown Lewiston was still occupied by a farm, a few dwellings, and a school house.
As early as 1836, efforts were made to build dams, canals, and mills, but capital was lacking. Boston investors later made the developments possible. Each of the 1850 and 1860 census counts showed a doubling of the size of Lewiston.The DeWitt Hotel was built around 1854 and the Maine Seminary, later Bates College was established in 1855. After being chartered as a city in 1861, the city prospered during the Civil War, as the demand for textiles was high and steady.
Lewiston's first mayor, Jacob Barker Ham, took office in 1863. Subsequent mayors went on to higher office. William P. Frye went to Congress and served as President pro tem of the U.S. Senate, twice being next in line for the presidency due to vacancies in the office of Vice President. Alonzo Garcelon, mayor in 1871, became governor of Maine in 1879. Another mayor-turned-congressman was Daniel McGillicuddy.
An impressive city building was constructed in 1873. The current Lewiston City Hall replaced it after a fire in 1890. The Music Hall was built in 1877, with the aim of being "the best opera house east of Boston." It was renovated between 1999 and 2003 to house the Lewiston District courthouse.
A spur from Lewiston by the Canadian National Railway introduced competition to the Maine Central Railroad and freight rates dropped. Starting in the 1870s, the Grand Trunk Station became the arrival point for thousands of French Canadians. Many settled in the area between Lisbon Street and the river, in blocks built by the mills or in an area called "Little Canada." By 1880, the population had risen to 19,083, a tenfold increase in 40 years.
The oldest Roman Catholic church in Lewiston is St. Joseph's Church, built on Main Street between 1863 and 1867. The first parochial school was established in 1882. The first teachers were Sisters of Charity until replaced by the Ladies of Sion in 1892. St. Peter's Church served the French parish, was replaced by Saints Peter and Paul Church, built 1905-1938. St. Dominic's High School was founded in 1941 in the clubhouse of L'Association St. Dominique.
Lewiston High School opened in 1850 and moved into a brick
building on Main Street in 1859. A fire company was started in 1849. The Grey Nuns organized the first hospital, St. Mary's, which was dedicated in 1889. Central Maine General Hospital was established in 1891 with thirty beds in two houses on Main Street.
Due to increased competitions from textile concerns in the South and overseas, the textile industry in Lewiston has gradually declined. A variety of new industries have grownup to replace it. The Geiger Brothers, publishers of The Farmer's Almanac, brought their printing business to Lewiston in 1955.
Today 36 592 people live in Lewiston (2010 census).
