It was May 19, 2012 and a young and determined Canadian was proudly standing on top of the world after an agonizingly slow climb up Mount Everest. Shriya Shah-Klorfine had reached the summit. But in the hours that followed, things would go dreadfully wrong and she would perish, like hundreds before her, high up in Everest's "Death Zone."
Since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's first ascent of Everest almost 60 years ago, it has been an irresistible fascination for aspiring mountaineers. Hundreds make the attempt every year, and many don't make it. This year was no exception as hundreds made their way to the summit even as worrying signs pointed to trouble. Among them was Shriya Shah-Klorfine, the cheerful and energetic Torontonian. She had never climbed a mountain before, and despite warnings from her friends, husband, and seasoned Everest sherpas, she was climbing the world's highest peak, determined to succeed.
In this 2012 documentary, Bob McKeown travels to Nepal and pieces together what happened with exclusive never-before-seen video of Shah-Klorfine's final hours on Everest. the fifth estate uncovers startling information about her deadly climb into the icy oxygen-thin expanse of Everest known as the Death Zone.

Officially, Mount Everest is 29,029ft based on a 1954 ground measurement. A satellite-based measurement in 1999 found it to be six feet taller but this was disputed.
The summit is just under the cruising altitude of a passenger jet (around 31,000ft)
At Everest's highest point, you are breathing in a third of the amount of oxygen you would normally breathe. This isn't because of different air composition but rather because of less air pressure.
Since 1969 at least one person has died on Everest every year except for 1977

The world's tallest man-made structure of any kind with the Burj Khalifa in Dubai at 829m. Everest is more than ten times its height.
The world's second highest building, Taipei 101 in Taiwan would need to be stacked up more than 17 times to match Everest
The first tweet from the summit was sent by Kenton Cool in 2011. He tweeted: "Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from the top of the world thanks to a weak 3G signal"
The mountain gets taller by 4mm every years due to upward thrust created by two opposing tectonic plates.
Google has now mapped Everest, although it did not get to the summit. In 2011 a team spent 2 weeks hiking over 70 miles to reach base camp, capturing images along the way.
Without extra oxygen, Australian Tim Macartney-Snape became the first to climb from sea level to the summit, in May 1990.
The first phone call was place from the summit in summer of 2013. Nepalese officials, however, were less than impressed and deemed it illegal.
Bear Grylls, the youngest British climber to summit the mountain, also flew higher than the peak in a powered paraglider in 2007.
The record for the longest time spent on the summit is 21 hours, achieved by Babu Chiri Sherpa in 1999.
In 2004 there was a wedding on the summit. Moni Mule Pati and Pem Dorjee Sherpa, both from Nepal kept their plans a secret from other climbers until they reached the peak.
Two Polish climbers, Leszka Cichy and Krzysztof Wielicki, were the first two summit Everst during winter in February of 1980
Everest is well known for its "traffic jams". Sometimes several hundred climbers can be on the summit at the same time.
The mountain was named after George Everest in 1856. He was a retired Surveyor General who never saw the peak.

Hello everyone! It's been quite a while since I've uploaded anything to my channel. But recently, I've made a video that I've been wanting to make for quite some time, and I have the connection to do it, so I figured, "why not?"
How this video came about:
About 2 years ago, I became aware of the problems of Mount Everest; more specifically, the pollution and garbage that has piled up over the years on this beautiful and majestic peak. In doing so, I became fascinated of the story about so many bodies being left behind. When climbing the World's Tallest Mountain, it's a given that you're facing death. Especially since nothing can survive without oxygen above 24,000 feet in elevation. However, in my research, it seems many people are either unaware of just how difficult it is to simply survive on such a challenging obstacle as Everest, or they just play ignorance. In any case, many are saddened, shocked; even horrified at the prospect of having to climb over bodies while ascending to the Summit. Indeed, many bodies become landmarks; names on maps, who's real identities are forgotten to time.
While looking over images of bodies on Mount Everest those 2 years ago, I noticed that I was humming the song, "Dust In The Wind" by Kansas. I knew right then that I had to make a music video using these haunting images, as well as this beautiful song. I would like to dedicate this video to all those whom have perished in their quest to summit the World's Tallest Mountain. Let us never forget that they had names, identities, and most importantly, families and friends who loved and cared about them. They paid the ultimate price for the best chance any mortal on this Earth has to touch Heaven.
I have included a disclaimer for the music in this video, at the end of the video. Nevertheless, at the risk of this video being taken down because of legal reasons, I am going to state here:

A group of intrepid explorers have documented the summit of Mount Everest using a 360 degree camera.
The milestone in virtual mountaineering saw four Nepalese guides become the first men in the world to document the whole south route to the summit of Everest using a special surround-view rig.
A backpack strapped to the climbers carried the camera system consisting of a cube of six GoPro camera set to record pictures and video at regular intervals.
Experienced mountain climbers Lakpa Sherpa, Pemba Rinji Sherpa, Kusang Sherpa and Ang Kaji Sherpa, completed the trek to the summit at 8848 meters of altitiude.

Amazing self video with breathtaking views taken by S. Anand Kumar from top of the world- summit of Mount Everest. Anand Kumar of India is now the first Dalit to reach the summit- Mt. Everest, a dream for all adventure seekers around the world. At 7.30 in the morning of 25th May 2014, just one hour after her teammate Malavath Poorna, who has by then already become the youngest woman in the world to reach the top of the world, Anand Kumar too peaked. Anand Kumar is also just 16 years old and a eleventh class student at Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Educational Institutions Society's school. Born of a very poor family, Anand's father was a teacher in a private school, but is now working as a cycle mechanic to repay the loan he has taken from the shop owner to construct a pucca house at his dwelling. Just few years back, half of his family members were taking turns to sleep as his house was leaking in monsoon rains. Anand vowed to reach new heights that day and he has done that against all odds. Similar to Poorna, Anand too achieved the feat in just nine months time from being selected for a rock climbing camp near Hyderabad (in September 2013) to reach to the top of the world. Unimaginable!!

Mount Everest
Mount Everest, also known in Nepal as Sagarmāthā and in Tibet as Chomolungma, is Earth's highest mountain. It is located in the Mahalangur mountain range in Nepal and Tibet. Its peak is 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level. It is not the furthest summit from the centre of the Earth. That honour goes to Mount Chimborazo, in the Andes. The international border between China (Tibet Autonomous Region) and Nepal runs across Everest's precise summit point. Its massif includes neighbouring peaks Lhotse, 8,516 m (27,940 ft); Nuptse, 7,855 m (25,771 ft) and Changtse, 7,580 m (24,870 ft).
In 1856, the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India established the first published height of Everest, then known as Peak XV, at 8,840 m (29,002 ft). The current official height of 8,848 m (29,029 ft) as recognised by China and Nepal was established by a 1955 Indian survey and subsequently confirmed by a Chinese survey in 1975. In 1865, Everest was given its official English name by the Royal Geographical Society upon a recommendation by Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India. Waugh named the mountain after his predecessor in the post, Sir George Everest, arguing that there were many local names, against the opinion of Everest.

Anand Kumar
Anand Kumar (born 1 January 1973) is an Indian mathematician and a columnist for various national and international mathematical journals and magazines. He is best known for his Super 30 programme, which he started in Patna, Bihar in 2002, and which coaches economically backward students for IIT-JEE, the entrance examination for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). By 2015, 333 out of the 390 had made it to IITs and Discovery Channel showcased his work in a documentary.
He has been invited by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University to speak on his globally acclaimed effort to mentor students from the underprivileged sections for admission to IIT.
Early life
Anand Kumar was born in Patna, Bihar. His father was a clerk in the postal department of India. His father could not afford private schooling for his children, and Anand attended a Hindi medium government school, where he developed his deep interest in Mathematics. During graduation, Kumar submitted papers on Number Theory, which were published in Mathematical Spectrum and The Mathematical Gazette.

Amazing self video with breathtaking views taken by S. Anand Kumar from top of the world- summit of Mount Everest. Anand Kumar of India is now the first Dalit to reach the summit- Mt. Everest, a dream for all adventure seekers around the world. At 7.30 in the morning of 25th May 2014, just one hour after her teammate Malavath Poorna, who has by then already become the youngest woman in the world to reach the top of the world, Anand Kumar too peaked. Anand Kumar is also just 16 years old and a eleventh class student at Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Educational Institutions Society's school. Born of a very poor family, Anand's father was a teacher in a private school, but is now working as a cycle mechanic to repay the loan he has taken from the shop owner to construct a pucca house at his dwelling. Just few years back, half of his family members were taking turns to sleep as his house was leaking in monsoon rains. Anand vowed to reach new heights that day and he has done that against all odds. Similar to Poorna, Anand too achieved the feat in just nine months time from being selected for a rock climbing camp near Hyderabad (in September 2013) to reach to the top of the world. 360°: Climbing Mount Everest
A group of intrepid explorers have documented the summit of Mount Everest using a 360 degree camera. The milestone in virtual mountaineering saw four Nepalese guides become the first men in the world to document the whole south route to the summit of Everest using a special surround-view rig. A backpack strapped to the climbers carried the camera system consisting of a cube of six GoPro camera set to record pictures and video at regular intervals. Experienced mountain climbers Lakpa Sherpa, Pemba Rinji Sherpa, Kusang Sherpa and Ang Kaji Sherpa, completed the trek to the summit at 8848 meters of altitiude.

But in the hours that followed, things would go dreadfully wrong and she would perish, like hundreds before her, high up in Everest's "Death Zone."

Hundreds make the attempt every year, and many don't make it. This year was no exception as hundreds made their way to the summit even as worrying signs pointed to trouble. She had never climbed a mountain before, and despite warnings from her friends, husband, and seasoned Everest sherpas, she was climbing the world's highest peak, determined to succeed.

The world's tallest man-made structure of any kind with the Burj Khalifa in Dubai at 829m. Everest is more than ten times its height.
The world's second highest building, Taipei 101 in Taiwan would need to be stacked up more than 17 times to match Everest
The first tweet from the summit was sent by Kenton Cool in 2011. He tweeted: "Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from the top of the world thanks to a weak 3G signal"
The mountain gets taller by 4mm every years due to upward thrust created by two opposing tectonic plates.
Google has now mapped Everest, although it did not get to the summit. In 2011 a team spent 2 weeks hiking over 70 miles to reach base camp, capturing images along the way.
Without extra oxygen, Australian Tim Macartney-Snape became the first to climb from sea level to the summit, in May 1990.
The first phone call was place from the summit in summer of 2013. Nepalese officials, however, were less than impressed and deemed it illegal.
Bear Grylls, the youngest British climber to summit the mountain, also flew higher than the peak in a powered paraglider in 2007.
The record for the longest time spent on the summit is 21 hours, achieved by Babu Chiri Sherpa in 1999.
In 2004 there was a wedding on the summit. Moni Mule Pati and Pem Dorjee Sherpa, both from Nepal kept their plans a secret from other climbers until they reached the peak.

Hello everyone! It's been quite a while since I've uploaded anything to my channel. But recently, I've made a video that I've been wanting to make for quite some time, and I have the connection to do it, so I figured, "why not?"
How this video came about:
About 2 years ago, I became aware of the problems of Mount Everest; more specifically, the pollution and garbage that has piled up over the years on this beautiful and majestic peak. In doing so, I became fascinated of the story about so many bodies being left behind. When climbing the World's Tallest Mountain, it's a given that you're facing death. Especially since nothing can survive without oxygen above 24,000 feet in elevation. However, in my research, it seems many people are either unaware of just how difficult it is to simply survive on such a challenging obstacle as Everest, or they just play ignorance. In any case, many are saddened, shocked; even horrified at the prospect of having to climb over bodies while ascending to the Summit. Indeed, many bodies become landmarks; names on maps, who's real identities are forgotten to time.
While looking over images of bodies on Mount Everest those 2 years ago, I noticed that I was humming the song, "Dust In The Wind" by Kansas. I knew right then that I had to make a music video using these haunting images, as well as this beautiful song. I would like to dedicate this video to all those whom have perished in their quest to summit the World's Tallest Mountain. Let us never forget that they had names, identities, and most importantly, families and friends who loved and cared about them. They paid the ultimate price for the best chance any mortal on this Earth has to touch Heaven.

A group of intrepid explorers have documented the summit of Mount Everest using a 360 degree camera.
The milestone in virtual mountaineering saw four Nepalese guides become the first men in the world to document the whole south route to the summit of Everest using a special surround-view rig.
A backpack strapped to the climbers carried the camera system consisting of a cube of six GoPro camera set to record pictures and video at regular intervals.
Experienced mountain climbers Lakpa Sherpa, Pemba Rinji Sherpa, Kusang Sherpa and Ang Kaji Sherpa, completed the trek to the summit at 8848 meters of altitiude.

Amazing self video with breathtaking views taken by S. Anand Kumar from top of the world- summit of Mount Everest. Anand Kumar of India is now the first Dalit to reach the summit- Mt. Everest, a dream for all adventure seekers around the world. At 7.30 in the morning of 25th May 2014, just one hour after her teammate Malavath Poorna, who has by then already become the youngest woman in the world to reach the top of the world, Anand Kumar too peaked. Anand Kumar is also just 16 years old and a eleventh class student at Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Educational Institutions Society's school. Born of a very poor family, Anand's father was a teacher in a private school, but is now working as a cycle mechanic to repay the loan he has taken from the shop owner to construct a pucca house at his dwelling. Just few years back, half of his family members were taking turns to sleep as his house was leaking in monsoon rains. Anand vowed to reach new heights that day and he has done that against all odds. Similar to Poorna, Anand too achieved the feat in just nine months time from being selected for a rock climbing camp near Hyderabad (in September 2013) to reach to the top of the world. Unimaginable!!

In May 2014, we trekked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal with two drones: a DJI Phantom and a TurboAce Matrix. This was my 7th visit to Everest and once again it was the adventure of a lifetime!
The resulting aerial footage in this video is the culmination of nearly a year of training, planning, crashing, experimentation and exhilaration. The ability to capture these unique views with a drone was amazing. Perspective changes everything.
When we arrived at Everest Base Camp it was mostly deserted due to the tragic April 18, 2014 avalanche that killed 16 Sherpa and Nepalese guides, and the subsequent cancellation of the Spring climbing season on the South Side of the mountain.
Many thanks to my incredible staff of Sherpa guides and porters who made this trip possible and hand carried the fragile aircraft and support gear over these high altitude passes as well as up to Everest Base Camp. I could not have accomplished this goal without their generous help, hard work and sincere friendship.
Thanks also to my wonderful 2014 Himalayan Workshops clients for their enthusiasm and support as I was constantly repairing, charging and obsessing over the drones. Sharing the experience with them made it so much richer.

Being an avid traveller myself, I know how testing this can be on yourself and the people you travel with. Your true colours appear in these situations, and like a battlefield, it's where friendships are won and lost.
Sitting down in my meeting with Jody and Perry and listening to their stories was affirmation for me that these two had experienced a lot together with travel being their biggest test. The journey they had been on had only strengthened their friendship and nourished their love for one another. They understand each other like no one else and have developed into the perfect team.
On March 18th 2016 another destination was crossed off the map. Maleny on the Sunshine Coast was where they formalised their love. A place that is now a beacon to how far they've come, with a light that will guide them into the distance as they continue their journey as husband and wife.
Basecamp, Mount Everest is a goal they've got their eyes set on towards the end of the year. Getting to know Jody and Perry and having the privilege of capturing their wedding day, gives me belief that whatever challenges they face on this expedition, they'll be there for one other, with strength, commitment, trust and a whole lot of love.

360°: Climbing Mount Everest
A group of intrepid explorers have documented the summit of Mount Everest using a 360 degree camera. The milestone in virtual mountaineering saw four Nepalese guides become the first men in the world to document the whole south route to the summit of Everest using a special surround-view rig. A backpack strapped to the climbers carried the camera system consisting of a cube of six GoPro camera set to record pictures and video at regular intervals. Experienced mountain climbers Lakpa Sherpa, Pemba Rinji Sherpa, Kusang Sherpa and Ang Kaji Sherpa, completed the trek to the summit at 8848 meters of altitiude.

Officially, Mount Everest is 29,029ft based on a 1954 ground measurement. A satellite-based measurement in 1999 found it to be six feet taller but this was disputed.
The summit is just under the cruising altitude of a passenger jet (around 31,000ft)
At Everest's highest point, you are breathing in a third of the amount of oxygen you would normally breathe. This isn't because of different air composition but rather because of less air pressure.

Hello everyone! It's been quite a while since I've uploaded anything to my channel. But recently, I've made a video that I've been wanting to make for quite some time, and I have the connection to do it, so I figured, "why not?"
How this video came about:
About 2 years ago, I became aware of the problems of Mount Everest; more specifically, the pollution and garbage that has piled up over the years on this beautiful and majestic peak. In doing so, I became fascinated of the story about so many bodies being left behind. When climbing the World's Tallest Mountain, it's a given that you're facing death. Especially since nothing can survive without oxygen above 24,000 feet in elevation. However, in my research, it seems many people are either unaware of just how difficult it is to simply survive on such a challenging obstacle as Everest, or they just play ignorance. In any case, many are saddened, shocked; even horrified at the prospect of having to climb over bodies while ascending to the Summit. Indeed, many bodies become landmarks; names on maps, who's real identities are forgotten to time.
While looking over images of bodies on Mount Everest those 2 years ago, I noticed that I was humming the song, "Dust In The Wind" by Kansas. I knew right then that I had to make a music video using these haunting images, as well as this beautiful song. I would like to dedicate this video to all those whom have perished in their quest to summit the World's Tallest Mountain. Let us never forget that they had names, identities, and most importantly, families and friends who loved and cared about them. They paid the ultimate price for the best chance any mortal on this Earth has to touch Heaven.
I have included a disclaimer for the music in this video, at the end of the video. Nevertheless, at the risk of this video being taken down because of legal reasons, I am going to state here:

At 7.30 in the morning of 25th May 2014, just one hour after her teammate Malavath Poorna, who has by then already become the youngest woman in the world to reach the top of the world, Anand Kumar too peaked. Anand Kumar is also just 16 years old and a eleventh class student at Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Educational Institutions Society's school. Born of a very poor family, Anand's father was a teacher in a private school, but is now working as a cycle mechanic to repay the loan he has taken from the shop owner to construct a pucca house at his dwelling. Just few years back, half of his family members were taking turns to sleep as his house was leaking in monsoon rains. Anand vowed to reach new heights that day and he has done that against all odds. Similar to Poorna, Anand too achieved the feat in just nine months time from being selected for a rock climbing camp near Hyderabad (in September 2013) to reach to the top of the world.
