School principals oversee the planning, organisation, and coordination of the day-to-day educational and administrative running of a school.
They are often responsible for hiring new staff as well as setting the educational program, based on the curriculum provided by the government. They also set up systems to monitor and improve school and student performance.
They prepare and manage school budgets, and oversee fundraising activities with parent groups. In some schools, the principal may also be responsible for the clerical and administrative duties and have some teaching duties.
Principals work in all Australian public, catholic and independent schools. They usually work regular teaching hours, but are expected to work additional hours to attend staff meetings and undertake administrative tasks and, in some cases, prepare for classes.
They frequently have a high level of contact with the public, often acting as the school's representative in the community and sometimes meeting with prospective students and their parents.
School principals need to have previous experience as a senior teacher and as a deputy principal. Sometimes teachers may be required to relocate to rural and remote districts to find work as a school principal.
School principals are responsible for managing the educational, administrative and financial affairs of a school. They liaise with parents and the wider community building positive relationships, enforce school discipline policies and represent the school at community and administrative meetings.
