We're pretty sure the White House has Netflix.
The Obama administration has responded tonight to a WhiteHouse.gov petition to pardon Steven Avery, the subject of the Netflix true crime documentary series Making a Murderer, which has pretty much become the national obsession since it was released last month.
Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey are currently in prison for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach , although fans of the deep-diving series believe the local sheriff's department and prosecutor's office manufactured the case against Avery.
The White House's response to the petition, which was signed by close to 130,000 people so far, won't be what those fans are looking for.

Who knew that Alexis Badden Mayer of the Organic Consumers Association would be arrested outside the White House when she attempted to deliver a DVD Petition with over 200,000 names asking Michelle Obama to ask her husband to fulfill a campaign promise to label GMO food products?
There is no more basic American right, than to petition the government, to speak up and have your voice heard as a citizen by your elected representatives -- but not if you don't have the money to buy access to officials who have become more responsive to the interest groups that finance their elections then the people who elected them. And so it was with the petition that called for the truthful labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). People want to know what they are eating and want food labeling to indicate if the food has been genetically modified.
In this Instant Film, the story gets sidetracked when a couple of Jewish "missionaries" coincidentally roll up at the White House and ask to see the President, then perform the Jewish Tefillin ritual which consists of strapping a small box containing Torah verses to the head and arm of Adam Eidinger, one of demonstrators. While Adam is strapped he begins whispering about how GMO foods are not Kosher and how the insecticides, genetically engineered into corn, are killing the bees. All this does not go unnoticed by the uniformed Secret Service, who become increasingly impatient, with a demonstration, now blocking an entrance, that seems to be spiraling out of control. Instead of arresting those blocking the entrance, they arrest the person trying to deliver the petitions, Alexis Baden-Mayer from the Organic Consumers Association.

Mar 11, 2013 Statement by Alexis The police kept telling me that I would be held overnight, but I was released after four hours, due to the heroic efforts of my husband and mother who stayed at the police station with my 3-month-old baby and refused to leave until I was released. I was ordered to appear in court a few weeks later on the charge of unlawful entry. It's a misdemeanor charge, but, because the charge involved the White House, a felony judge had to hear the case. The judge I was assigned to was annoyed that she would have to interrupt her docket of serious crimes with something so unimportant. She wasn't sympathetic to my position that I was wrongly arrested and wanted to be acquitted.

The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., the house was designed by Irish-born James Hoban, and built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia sandstone in the Neoclassical style. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the house in 1801, he (with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) expanded the building outward, creating two colonnades that were meant to conceal stables and storage.
In 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed house in October 1817. Construction continued with the addition of the South Portico in 1824 and the North in 1829. Because of crowding within the executive mansion itself, President Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901. Eight years later, President William Howard Taft expanded the West Wing and created the first Oval Office which was eventually moved as the section was expanded. The third-floor attic was converted to living quarters in 1927 by augmenting the existing hip roof with long shed dormers. A newly constructed East Wing was used as a reception area for social events; Jefferson's colonnades connected the new wings. East Wing alterations were completed in 1946, creating additional office space. By 1948, the house's load-bearing exterior walls and internal wood beams were found to be close to failure. Under Harry S. Truman, the interior rooms were completely dismantled and a new internal load-bearing steel frame constructed inside the walls. Once this work was completed, the interior rooms were rebuilt.

We're pretty sure the White House has Netflix. The Obama administration has responded tonight to a WhiteHouse.gov petition to pardon Steven Avery, the subject of the Netflix true crime documentary series Making a Murderer, which has pretty much become the national obsession since it was released last month. Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey are currently in prison for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach , although fans of the deep-diving series believe the local sheriff's department and prosecutor's office manufactured the case against Avery. The White House's response to the petition, which was signed by close to 130,000 people so far, won't be what those fans are looking for. The Obama administration has responded tonight to a WhiteHouse.gov petition to pardon Steven Avery, the subject of the Netflix true crime documentary series Making a Murderer, which has pretty much become the national obsession since it was released last month.
Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey are currently in prison for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach , although fans of the deep-diving series believe the local sheriff's department and prosecutor's office manufactured the case against Avery.
The White House's response to the petition, which was signed by close to 130,000 people so far, won't be what those fans are looking for.

Who knew that Alexis Badden Mayer of the Organic Consumers Association would be arrested outside the White House when she attempted to deliver a DVD Petition with over 200,000 names asking Michelle Obama to ask her husband to fulfill a campaign promise to label GMO food products?
There is no more basic American right, than to petition the government, to speak up and have your voice heard as a citizen by your elected representatives -- but not if you don't have the money to buy access to officials who have become more responsive to the interest groups that finance their elections then the people who elected them. And so it was with the petition that called for the truthful labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). People want to know what they are eating and want food labeling to indicate if the food has been genetically modified.
In this Instant Film, the story gets sidetracked when a couple of Jewish "missionaries" coincidentally roll up at the White House and ask to see the President, then perform the Jewish Tefillin ritual which consists of strapping a small box containing Torah verses to the head and arm of Adam Eidinger, one of demonstrators. While Adam is strapped he begins whispering about how GMO foods are not Kosher and how the insecticides, genetically engineered into corn, are killing the bees. All this does not go unnoticed by the uniformed Secret Service, who become increasingly impatient, with a demonstration, now blocking an entrance, that seems to be spiraling out of control. Instead of arresting those blocking the entrance, they arrest the person trying to deliver the petitions, Alexis Baden-Mayer from the Organic Consumers Association.

Mar 11, 2013 Statement by Alexis The police kept telling me that I would be held overnight, but I was released after four hours, due to the heroic efforts of my husband and mother who stayed at the police station with my 3-month-old baby and refused to leave until I was released. I was ordered to appear in court a few weeks later on the charge of unlawful entry. It's a misdemeanor charge, but, because the charge involved the White House, a felony judge had to hear the case. The judge I was assigned to was annoyed that she would have to interrupt her docket of serious crimes with something so unimportant. She wasn't sympathetic to my position that I was wrongly arrested and wanted to be acquitted.

Recently, a small team representing you – our supporters – and the entire Patagonia family delivered a petition containing more than 70,000 signatures to President Obama and his top environmental advisers. The petition brought together activist voices from all 50 states and 60 countries asking President Obama to crack down on deadbeat dams – starting by finding a path to remove four harmful dams on the nation’s most important salmon river, the lower Snake, and begin the biggest watershed restoration project in history.
We made a short film to thank you for your help in working to tear down deadbeat dams on the Snake River and around the world. This film celebrates the success of our campaign so far – including the moment we handed over your signature to President Obama’s team.
DamNation has brought dam removal as a tool for river restoration to broad, new audiences, won several major awards, attracted international media coverage, and moved citizens to act all over the world. The South Portico was constructed in 1829 based on earlier drawings by
James Hoban. The second floor balcony, known as the Truman Balcony, was
added in 1947. Welcome ceremonies for visiting heads of state take
place on the South Lawn. Marine One, the president's helicopter
service, lands and departs from the South Lawn. 'Jefferson's West
Colonnade' is seen on the left of the residence in this nineteenth
century engraved view. The West Colonnade originally concealed a stable
and laundry room. Later it became the site of Franklin Roosevelt's
swimming pool. President Nixon converted the space to the current Press

Portico. The house was originally built without porticos. Before
construction of the north portico in 1824, the north façade looked much

Both James Hobanoriginal architect of the White House, and Benjamin
Henry Latrobe who developed plans for its rebuilding after the 1814
fire, proposed north and south porticos. Both porticos, as built, are
the work of Hoban. 'Leinster House in Dublin' The eighteenth century
ducal palace in Dublin served as a model for the White House. 'The

The South Portico was constructed in 1829 based on earlier drawings by
James Hoban. The second floor balcony, known as the Truman Balcony, was
added in 1947. Welcome ceremonies for visiting heads of state take
place on the South Lawn. Marine One, the president's helicopter
service, lands and departs from the South Lawn. 'Jefferson's West
Colonnade' is seen on the left of the residence in this nineteenth
century engraved view. The West Colonnade originally concealed a stable
and laundry room. Later it became the site of Franklin Roosevelt's
swimming pool. President Nixon converted the space to the current Press

Bantry House perches over Bantry Bay in County Cork, Ireland. This onetime small home grew exponentially after Richard White purchased the land in 1765; through his careful expansion, the estate eventually surpassed 80,000 acres. It remained in the White family throughout its colorful history, including a five-year stint as a hospital during the Irish Civil War, and today it has been converted into a charming bed and breakfast and tea room.
Bantry House sightseeing includes a trip through some of the estate’s gardens. Explore terraces, rows of shrubs, and hedges, many of which overlook Bantry Bay. A tour of Bantry House’s interior is much like wandering into a museum, as the house is loaded with artwork, antiques, and other decorations. Many of these items date back to Viscount Berehaven, who traveled extensively through Europe with his wife during the 1820s and 1830s. Bantry House isn’t all antiques and art, though; on Fridays, you can peruse local produce and potential souvenirs at the Bantry Market.

A petition on “We the People” website wants the White House to investigate allegations that Russia’s Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who served prison time for embezzlement and is wanted on murder charges, donated large sums to lobby the US Congress for a “relations-damaging” law.
Since it was created on June 14, the petition has gathered over 21,400 signatures. It needs a total of 100,000 by July 14 for the document to earn a response from the White House.
The authors’ demand is based on the allegations that in 2005 then-Senator Barack Obama and his future opponent in the 2008 presidential election, John McCain, co-sponsored a resolution introduced by Joe Biden condemning the arrest and imprisonment of Russian oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky while being sponsored by the man himself through the lobbying firm APCO Worldwide. The report linked in the petition claims that Khodorkovsky channeled $110,000 to APCO Worldwide, headed by Margery Kraus, through two offshore firms, Corbiere Trust Co.Ltd and Palmus Trust Company Ltd, specifically to lobby the resolution S.RES.322 that labeled his criminal case as “politically motivated” and accused the Russian penal system of violating the rights of Khodorkovsky and his business partner Platon Lebedev.
The text of the resolution said that “the criminal justice system in Russia has not accorded Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev fair, transparent, and impartial treatment under the laws of the Russian Federation.” Kraus is a trustee of the Institute of Modern Russia, chaired by Khodorkovsky’s son Pavel, and is a long-time Khodorkovsky supporter.
The petition argues that the resolution inflicted “irreparable damage to US-Russian relations” and should be considered a “form of political corruption” given the criminal background of Khodorkovsky, who spent 10 years in jail for embezzlement and money laundering before being pardoned by President Vladimir Putin in 2014. He is currently wanted in Russia on murder charges, since in late 2015 Russia’s Prosecutor General's Office charged Khodorkovsky with the arranging of the 1998 assassination of the mayor of the oil-rich city of Nefteyugansk.A separate report surfaced claiming that Khodorkovsky, along with Bill Browder, the head of Hermitage Capital Management investment fund and employer of Sergey Magnitsky, resorted to the same scheme while lobbying the so-called Magnitsky Act.

A petition on “We the People” website wants the White House to investigate allegations that Russia’s Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who served prison time for embezzlement and is wanted on murder charges, donated large sums to lobby the US Congress for a “relations-damaging” law.
Since it was created on June 14, the petition has gathered over 21,400 signatures. It needs a total of 100,000 by July 14 for the document to earn a response from the White House.
The authors’ demand is based on the allegations that in 2005 then-Senator Barack Obama and his future opponent in the 2008 presidential election, John McCain, co-sponsored a resolution introduced by Joe Biden condemning the arrest and imprisonment of Russian oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky while being sponsored by the man himself through the lobbying firm APCO Worldwide. The report linked in the petition claims that Khodorkovsky channeled $110,000 to APCO Worldwide, headed by Margery Kraus, through two offshore firms, Corbiere Trust Co.Ltd and Palmus Trust Company Ltd, specifically to lobby the resolution S.RES.322 that labeled his criminal case as “politically motivated” and accused the Russian penal system of violating the rights of Khodorkovsky and his business partner Platon Lebedev.
The text of the resolution said that “the criminal justice system in Russia has not accorded Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev fair, transparent, and impartial treatment under the laws of the Russian Federation.” Kraus is a trustee of the Institute of Modern Russia, chaired by Khodorkovsky’s son Pavel, and is a long-time Khodorkovsky supporter.
The petition argues that the resolution inflicted “irreparable damage to US-Russian relations” and should be considered a “form of political corruption” given the criminal background of Khodorkovsky, who spent 10 years in jail for embezzlement and money laundering before being pardoned by President Vladimir Putin in 2014. He is currently wanted in Russia on murder charges, since in late 2015 Russia’s Prosecutor General's Office charged Khodorkovsky with the arranging of the 1998 assassination of the mayor of the oil-rich city of Nefteyugansk.A separate report surfaced claiming that Khodorkovsky, along with Bill Browder, the head of Hermitage Capital Management investment fund and employer of Sergey Magnitsky, resorted to the same scheme while lobbying the so-called Magnitsky Act.

On February 17th, 2016, Holly Sterling, Jesselyn Radack, John Kiriakou, Tim Karr, Delphine Halgand, and Cornel West spoke at a news conference at the National Press Club, then delivered a petition containing over 150,000 signatures to the White House calling for the pardon of CIA whistleblower Jeffrey Sterling.
Sterling was convicted in 2015 under the Espionage Act as a source for New York Times reporter James Risen’s book “State of War.” Sterling began serving his three-and-a-half-year prison sentence eight months ago.
In December 2015, Sterling’s wife Holly Sterling launched a petition on RootsAction.org and on Change.org asking President Obama to immediately pardon her husband. Since then the petition has accumulated well over 150,000 signers.
Co-sponsoring the news conference at the National Press Club were ExposeFacts, Reporters Without Borders and RootsAction.org. Those organizations initiated a coalition of groups in support of the petition that also includes the Bill of Rights Defense Committee / Defending Dissent Foundation, the Center for Media and Democracy, the Freedom of the Press Foundation, The Nation magazine and Restore the Fourth. ExposeFacts is a project of the Institute for Public Accuracy.
In addition to CIA whistleblower Jeffrey Sterling’s wife Holly Sterling, the speakers at the news conference included:
* Cornel West, prominent civil rights activist, scholar, and professor at Union Theological Seminary;
* John Kiriakou, CIA whistleblower and former agency case officer;
* Jesselyn Radack, director of the Whistleblower and Source Protection Program (WHISPeR) at ExposeFacts;

Jesselyn Radack: “The Obama administration has presided over the most draconian crackdown on national security and intelligence community whistleblowers in U.S. history. The Justice Department has used the antiquated Espionage Act as a bludgeon to threaten, silence and imprison whistleblowers for alleged mishandling of classified information. Meanwhile, powerful, politically-connected individuals accused of the same conduct receive a slap on the wrist, or no punishment at all. Some even run for President of the U.S.”
Radack continued: “Using the Espionage Act against whistleblowers is grossly unfair. Courts have held that the government does not have to prove any harm to national security and does not have to prove any bad intent on the whistleblower’s part. Classification rules mean large parts of the trials, including Sterling’s, are conducted in secret — shielded from media and public scrutiny.
“Sterling’s conviction is a gross miscarriage of justice.
“The Espionage Act case against Sterling was the first — and so far only case — handed over to a jury and the unjust result epitomizes the wrongheadedness of using the Espionage Act against whistleblowers. …
“Jeffrey Sterling is a whistleblower. Sterling is a whistleblower because in 2003, he met with staff from the Senate Intelligence Committee to raise concerns about a botched [CIA] nuclear operation called Merlin. Sterling’s case is reminiscent of that of my clients: NSA whistleblowers Thomas Drake, Bill Binney, Kirk Wiebe, and Ed Loomis. My clients also used internal government channels, including the Senate Intelligence Committee, to report misconduct and became the targets of a federal criminal leak investigation for a news story by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and presidential pariah James Risen that they had nothing to do with.”
