My theme park season started with this cool, beautiful spring trip to the best park in Tennessee! Crowds were nonexistent, with wait times for rides never over 10 minutes. Dollywood's Festival of Nations was in full swing, so the park was decked out with lots of different world culture activities and shows.
Lightning Rod, Dollywood's new RMC woodie, was still closed, but the site was very active as crews were installing brakes on the launch hill, and I even caught some video of the trains being installed on the track!

Lightning rods don't attract lightning, they help to prevent it. Here's how: lightning rods have sharp points where coronal discharge occurs because the positively charged tip of the rod tears atoms apart in it's region and continuously fills the atmosphere around the structure with positive ions. When the negatively charged cloud comes near a structure that is protected with lightning rods, then those positive ions will be pulled up into the cloud, thus partially neutralizing the cloud in the region of the structure and decreasing the probability of strike.

A lightning rod (US, AUS) or lightning conductor (UK) is a metal rod or metallic object mounted on top of a building, electrically bonded using a wire or electrical conductor to interface with ground or "earth" through an electrode, engineered to protect the building in the event of lightning strike. If lightning targets the building it will preferentially strike the rod and be conducted to ground through the wire, instead of passing through the building, where it could start a fire or cause electrocution.
A lightning rod is a single component in a lightning protection system. Lightning rods are also called finials, air terminals or strike termination devices. The lighting rod requires a connection to earth to perform its protective function. Lightning rods come in many different forms, including hollow, solid, pointed, rounded, flat strips or even bristle brush-like: copper or aluminum. The main attribute of all lightning rods is they are conductive.
The lightning rod was invented by Benjamin Franklin in the Americas in 1749 and, perhaps independently, by Prokop Diviš in Europe in 1754.

Empire State Building: Lightning Strikes Thrice!
I caught three direct strikes to the Empire State Building lightning rod after midnight on 4/13/11 during a severe thunderstorm. I actually saw a fourth direct hit, but sadly wasn't filming at the time. I've never seen so many hits on the ESB in one night. It was ridiculous! But so much fun to watch. My theme park season started with this cool, beautiful spring trip to the best park in Tennessee! Crowds were nonexistent, with wait times for rides never over 10 minutes. Dollywood's Festival of Nations was in full swing, so the park was decked out with lots of different world culture activities and shows.
Lightning Rod, Dollywood's new RMC woodie, was still closed, but the site was very active as crews were installing brakes on the launch hill, and I even caught some video of the trains being installed on the track!

Lightning rods don't attract lightning, they help to prevent it. Here's how: lightning rods have sharp points where coronal discharge occurs because the positively charged tip of the rod tears atoms apart in it's region and continuously fills the atmosphere around the structure with positive ions. When the negatively charged cloud comes near a structure that is protected with lightning rods, then those positive ions will be pulled up into the cloud, thus partially neutralizing the cloud in the region of the structure and decreasing the probability of strike.

I caught three direct strikes to the Empire State Building lightning rod after midnight on 4/13/11 during a severe thunderstorm. I actually saw a fourth direct hit, but sadly wasn't filming at the time. I've never seen so many hits on the ESB in one night. It was ridiculous! But so much fun to watch.
Whoever said lightning doesn't strike twice was wrong. :)

Themed after a tricked out 1950s-era hot rod, Lightning Rod launches riders from zero to 45 mph more than 20 stories up its lift hill to one of the ride’s first airtime moments. At the crest of the hill, riders face twin summit airtime hills before tackling the daring first drop. Lightning Rod races down the 165-foot drop and propels guests along its 3,800-ft. track to a top speed of 73 mph, the fastest speed for a wood coaster in the world.
Located in Dollywood’s Jukebox Junction, Lightning Rod rockets riders around its massive wooden structure on an adrenaline-charged lap through the trees in the hills and valleys surrounding Dollywood. During the ride, guests experience nearly 20 seconds of airtime. The coaster train is comprised of 12 cars, carrying two passengers each, for a total of 24 people per train.
