An unprecedented satellite flyover look at the seasons changing in the Nile Delta.
Using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite, scientists and data visualizers stitched together a full year's worth of monthly observations of the land surface, coastal oceans, sea ice, and clouds into a seamless, photo-like mosaic of every square kilometer (.386 square mile) of our planet.
These monthly images reveal seasonal changes to the land surface: the green-up and dying-back of vegetation in temperate regions; and advancing and retreating snow cover. The Blue Marble - Next Generation - offers a year's worth of monthly composites in remarkable detail.

The Gift of the Gods to the Egyptians
For millennia, the Nile Delta has been providing food for the many cultures that inhabit Egypt. For more than a thousand years, traditional Arab boats, known as dhows, have transported agricultural produce from the fertile delta.
The Nile, the longest river system in the world, originates from two sources, the White Nile rising from Lake Victoria at the Equator and the Blue Nile from Lake Tana in the Ethiopian Highlands. The Nile has been the countrys lifeline from time immemorial and the Pharaohs believed it to be a gift from the Gods.
After travelling more than 6,500 km, the river passes the Egyptian capital, Cairo, then opens into the Nile Delta. Covering some 20,000 square kilometres, the delta stretches along the Mediterranean coast from Alexandria in the west to Port Said in the east.
People still farm the land beside the river and in the Nile Delta as they have for more than 5,000 years. The river and its delta are crucial to Egypt. Without their water and fertile soil, the country probably would not exist, at least not as we know it.
The delta is extremely vulnerable to climate change, however. Rising sea levels will cause coastal erosion and inundate valuable agricultural land and ground water with saline sea water. By 2050, the rise in sea levels could have displaced more than a million people. Changing patterns of rainfall and higher levels of evaporation are also anticipated. Combined with an increasing population, this is very likely to put severe stress on Egypts fresh water resources.

But today the delta - located on Egypt's northern coast, where the Nile river meets the Mediterranean sea, is facing rising sea levels that are drying out swaths of farmland.
Some are calling it an economic disaster that could eventually lead to widespread hunger in Egypt.

The Nile Delta (Arabic: دلتا النيل) is the delta formed in Northern Egypt (Lower Egypt) where the Nile River spreads out and drains into the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the world's largest river deltas—from Alexandria in the west to Port Said in the east, it covers 240 km of Mediterranean coastline—and is a rich agricultural region. From north to south the delta is approximately 160 km in length. The Delta begins slightly down-river from Cairo.

The delta is sometimes divided into sections, with the Nile dividing into two main distributaries, the Damietta and the Rosetta, flowing into the Mediterranean at port cities with the same name. The Suez Canal runs to the east of the delta, entering the coastal Lake Manzala in the north-east of the delta. To the north-west are three other coastal lakes or lagoons: Lake Burullus, Lake Idku and Lake Maryut

Transglobal Underground (sometimes written as Trans-Global Underground or simply as TGU) is a London-based music collective who specialise in a fusion of western, oriental and African music styles (sometimes labelled as "world fusion" or "ethno-techno"). Their first four albums featured Natacha Atlas as lead singer and their single "Temple Head" was used in a Coca-Cola advertising campaign for the 1996 Olympic Games. In 2008 they won the BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music after the release of their seventh official album, Moonshout. Their eighth album, The Stone Turntable, was released in May 2011 and their most recent release is an EP of remixes from the album, titled We Come To Tear Your Wall Down.
Although Transglobal Underground has always had a fluid line-up, the two core members of the group are Tim Whelan (keyboards, guitar, flute, melodica, programming, vocals) and Hamilton Lee (percussion, drums, keyboards, programming). Throughout the group's history, Whelan and Lee have deliberately clouded their identities via multiple pseudonyms and obscure credits - Whelan generally operating under the alias of "Alex Kasiek" and Lee under the alias of "Hamid Mantu" (also "Man Tu" or "Chris Hamilton"). Whelan has also used his "Alex Kasiek" pseudonym outside TGU work (sometimes combining it with his real name, as he did for his guest appearance on the 2002 Project Dark album Gramophone De Luxe) and has sometimes implied that Kasiek is a separate person. (For the purposes of this article, Whelan and Lee will be predominantly referred to by their main pseudonyms of Alex Kasiek and Hamid Mantu.)

The one hundred sixty-third edition features a Sentinel-2A satellite image of Cairo, Egypt.This image from Sentinel-2A on 13 August features Cairo, in Egypt. The capital of Egypt, Cairo is one of the largest cities in Africa. It has existed for over 1000 years on the same spot on the Nile River banks. Located in the northeastern part of the country, Cairo is the passage to the Nile delta. The Nile River is the father of African rivers and the longest river in the world. With a length of some 6650 km, it rises south of the equator and flows northwards through northeastern Africa, draining into the Mediterranean Sea. The river is the cause of the strong contrasts we see in the image. The river’s fertility allowed the Egyptians to thrive despite the arid surrounding desert. It has always delivered the necessary water to transform the desert into a lush garden, where produce such as tomatoes, potatoes, sugar cane, rice and even cotton are grown. The Nile Delta, in fact, ranks among the world’s most fertile farming areas. The sharp borderline between green fields and the yellow–brown desert is clear. Notice how the area is greener on the west side – the terrain is flatter, so more easily irrigated than the higher terrain to the east. The city of Cairo shows striking contrasts. Along the well-irrigated shoreline, the green reveals the thick vegetation, while the grey areas denote the dense city. In the older areas to the east, however, beneath the foothills of the Eastern Desert and the rocky Muqaṭṭam Hills, brown and ochre are the dominant colours. The city continuously mixes ancient and new. The Pyramids of Giza, erected on a rocky plateau on the west bank of the Nile, stand at the southwestern edge of the city, while the world’s oldest surviving obelisk in the northeast marks the site of Heliopolis, a suburb of Cairo some 10 km from the city centre. The 6th of October City, on the left side of the image, is a new city in the desert. It hosts students from various countries, as well as from Egypt, who study at its private universities. Cairo’s various golf courses are also featured in this image, as well as the international airport, partly visible on the top right. Sentinel2-A has been in orbit since 23 June, and is a multispectral high-resolution imaging mission for land monitoring, to provide imagery of vegetation, soil and water cover, inland waterways and coastal areas. For millennia, the Nile Delta has been providing food for the many cultures that inhabit Egypt. For more than a thousand years, traditional Arab boats, known as dhows, have transported agricultural produce from the fertile delta.
The Nile, the longest river system in the world, originates from two sources, the White Nile rising from Lake Victoria at the Equator and the Blue Nile from Lake Tana in the Ethiopian Highlands. The Nile has been the countrys lifeline from time immemorial and the Pharaohs believed it to be a gift from the Gods.
After travelling more than 6,500 km, the river passes the Egyptian capital, Cairo, then opens into the Nile Delta. Covering some 20,000 square kilometres, the delta stretches along the Mediterranean coast from Alexandria in the west to Port Said in the east.
People still farm the land beside the river and in the Nile Delta as they have for more than 5,000 years. The river and its delta are crucial to Egypt. Without their water and fertile soil, the country probably would not exist, at least not as we know it.
The delta is extremely vulnerable to climate change, however. Rising sea levels will cause coastal erosion and inundate valuable agricultural land and ground water with saline sea water. By 2050, the rise in sea levels could have displaced more than a million people. Changing patterns of rainfall and higher levels of evaporation are also anticipated. Combined with an increasing population, this is very likely to put severe stress on Egypts fresh water resources.

The river is the cause of the strong contrasts we see in the image. The river’s fertility allowed the Egyptians to thrive despite the arid surrounding desert. It has always delivered the necessary water to transform the desert into a lush garden, where produce such as tomatoes, potatoes, sugar cane, rice and even cotton are grown. The Nile Delta, in fact, ranks among the world’s most fertile farming areas.
The sharp borderline between green fields and the yellow–brown desert is clear. Notice how the area is greener on the west side – the terrain is flatter, so more easily irrigated than the higher terrain to the east.
The city of Cairo shows striking contrasts. Along the well-irrigated shoreline, the green reveals the thick vegetation, while the grey areas denote the dense city. In the older areas to the east, however, beneath the foothills of the Eastern Desert and the rocky Muqaṭṭam Hills, brown and ochre are the dominant colours.
The city continuously mixes ancient and new. The Pyramids of Giza, erected on a rocky plateau on the west bank of the Nile, stand at the southwestern edge of the city, while the world’s oldest surviving obelisk in the northeast marks the site of Heliopolis, a suburb of Cairo some 10 km from the city centre.
The 6th of October City, on the left side of the image, is a new city in the desert. It hosts students from various countries, as well as from Egypt, who study at its private universities.
Cairo’s various golf courses are also featured in this image, as well as the international airport, partly visible on the top right.
Sentinel2-A has been in orbit since 23 June, and is a multispectral high-resolution imaging mission for land monitoring, to provide imagery of vegetation, soil and water cover, inland waterways and coastal areas.

The Nile River is a major north-flowing river in northeastern Africa, it's generally regarded as the longest river in the world at 6,853 km long. The Nile is an "international" river as its water resources are shared by eleven countries, namely, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt. In particular, the Nile is the primary water resource and life artery for Egypt and Sudan.
Most of the population and cities of Egypt lie along those parts of the Nile valley north of Aswan, and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along the riverbanks. The Nile ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea.

The Nile is an "international" river as its water resources are shared by eleven countries, namely, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt. From endless grass covered savannahs to dense rain forests the large variety of landscapes as well as many species of wildlife is really quite remarkable.The Massai have retained their age-old traditions and the pastures at the bottom of the Ngorongoro Crater are ideal for their herds of cattle. The two hundred and sixty square kilometre Ngorongoro Crater is not only a wonder of nature but also home to an impressive number of animals. The bottom of the crater is covered with grass and several watering holes provide a perfect habitat for large herds of wild animals. In the second half of the twentieth century two British archaeologists and anthropologists made several striking discoveries in the region. In the Oldupai Canyon they discovered a Hominid skull that made both explorers world famous as the almost two million year old skull was the oldest prehistoric discovery of human existence ever found. Each morning two balloons take off from the Massai Kopjes in the centre of the National Park on a one hour journey above the Serengeti. Depending on wind and weather conditions the balloon rises to an altitude of more than three hundred metres above sea level. The pilots often navigate their balloons close to the ground and just above the treetops when most of the animals run away at the sight of the hot air balloon and the strange sound caused by its burner. Gazelles, gnus and buffalo crowd into their favourite pastureland that is usually located close to various watering holes while vultures are always to be found close to the herds and are always ready to take advantage of a dead or dying animal. The Serengeti - a symbol of a paradise that may not last forever and a world full of primeval beauty and natural wonder.

The Baliem Valley is not only West Papua’s high valley it is also the home of a unique indigenous people, the Dani. In the dense and virtually impenetrable forest regions of the Baliem Valley and its surrounding highlands there are numerous tribes but it is the Dani who are the most populated tribe of the region. At the beginning of the 1980’s Wamena was only a small village occupied by the Dani. However, the regular air service to New Guinea’s main harbour and capital city has now speeded up its development. Cement, corrugated iron and motor vehicles have since been flown into the rapidly expanding city. Today, Wamena has a population of around twelve thousand. The most striking and characteristic attire of the men is a tubular phalocrypt, or penis covering, made of dried gourd that in the language of the Dani is known as a ‘koteka’. Most of their traditional dress consists of magnificent feathers and plants and a strip of material worn around their neck is meant to protect them from evil spirits. Despite the discovery of their existence in the twentieth century the simple lifestyle of the Dani of West Papua continues to be intriguing, mysterious and totally fascinating.
