After a long struggle, San Diego Indymedia is back on the web and coming at you with ~monthly media-themed events (our next event is Friday, January 29). In a media environment dominated by corporate, commercial, anti-community monsters like f***book and utube, we are working on figuring out what our role should be and hope to post some thoughts on that in the coming months. The web site appears stable for now, but there might be a few hiccups in the coming weeks. Thank you for your patience.

This is a grassroots community blog. You can contribute (no account needed!) by posting WRITINGS, PHOTOS, AUDIO, VIDEOS and EVENTS. Click Publish to the Newswire or Add an Event. To contribute on an existing post, click Add a Comment at the bottom of the post.

Orlando Watley, a Chickasaw Native from Corcoran, California, is a political prisoner with a life sentence at Calipatria State Prison in the Imperial Valley. He was charged and acquitted for one crime, a double armed robbery and double attempted murder, and then Riverside County tried to pin another crime on him, a triple homicide, because they were trying to clear unsolved cases by targeting Native Youth and People of Color. Despite being 100% innocent, Orlando was convicted based on falsified testimony and DNA evidence, and has been in prison for twenty-two years for crimes he didn't commit.

On November 11, 2015 in Los Angeles, San Diego Independent Media Center interviewed Kanahus Manuel from the Orlando Watley Innocence Project, which is working to reverse Orlando's conviction and secure his release. Kanahus, a Secwepemc womyn warrior based in so-called British Colombia, described Orlando's case, Orlando's life as an Indigenous political prisoner, Orlando's reunion with his Mother after eighteen years, the connection of Orlando's situation to colonial repression of Native peoples on stolen lands, and the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom for Orlando Watley.

The purpose of this political graffiti video is to challenge Hip Hop graffiti writerz to move away from the egotistical and tag bang mentality to a more community based, revolutionary way of life. Those of us that study our surroundings and keep our eyes and ears to the streets know the Graffiti element can and should be used to educate, share and spread knowledge amongst those that refuse to be in their skkkools and kkkolleges. Also, this video is to inspire conscious people to take action and hit the streets, share and spread your knowledge too. --Read More (with Video*)--

The Walk for the Ancestors came to our region on November 3 with a gathering at the San Luis Rey mission in present-day Oceanside hosted by Mel Vernon of the Luiseño community (the Ataaxam People). The Walk for the Ancestors is a pilgrimage to the twenty-one California missions to bring attention to their central role in genocide of California Indigenous peoples and to oppose the canonization of the mission founder, Junipero Serra.

The gathering began with a circle in front of the mission in which stories from the past were shared (which I missed because of rain-induced traffic), continued with an indoor drum circle when the rain intensified, and concluded with a dinner and further stories at the adjacent San Luis Rey Bakery and Restaurant. --Read More--

The Walk for the Ancestors will conclude with a closing gathering at Mission San Diego at 400pm on Saturday, November 7, 10818 San Diego Mission Rd, San Diego, CA 92108 (near the intersection of I-8 and I-15 in Mission Valley)

San Diego Independent Media Center (SDIMC) facilitated getting Tijuana’s Etzétera, formerly known as Casa de Cultura Obrera, 4 Mac G5’s, 4 monitors, and 4 keyboards. Etzétera is a space for organizing against capitalism and fighting for worker rights, among other liberation work.

Etzétera is nestled in fraccionamiento Sonora, just several blocks from the busy 5 y 10. We met with one of Etzétera’s members who accepted the computers that will be used for organizing against capitalism and defending workers predominately in the maquiladora sector, among other uses. Etzétera’s space consists of a kitchen, used to sell food, event room for film screening, workshops, and events, and a smaller room that acts as an office and workshop space too. The outside has recently been adorned with Zapatista rebellious art. And there is a small garden at the side of the house where nopales and plants grow. --Read More (with fotos)--

We, the Palestinian Youth Movement-USA chapter (PYM), call on all Palestinian youth and our allies to defend our homeland and support the steadfastness of our brothers and sisters in Palestine. Friday, October 23, 2015 at 3:00 pm in front of the Federal building in Downtown San Diego. (880 Front St San Diego, CA 92101)

The Zionist bombardment on Al-Aqsa mosque, mass youth arrests, continuous displacement, home demolitions, and vigilante settler violence has taken the lives of more than 35 Palestinians in the last two weeks and left over 2000 injured. In response to the immense surge of Zionist aggression in Palestine, we in the Palestinian Diaspora must recognize that our peoples resistance is a mandatory element of maintaining survival, bonds to land, to society and to surviving in the face of an ongoing project of ethnic cleansing. But they cannot do it alone.

Flags, posters, and noise are encouraged. --Read More--

Monday October 12 marked a day of reflection and questioning, even though some have already made up their minds on the issue of the "discovery of America," it has not yet been given the deserved analysis and discussion. For over 10 years the dance group Mexica Chicahuac Ollin Tijuana - Force and Movement of Tijuana, celebrated this day of resistance of native nations of this continent with a demonstration of dance and word, to further raise public awareness in the city. Last weekend the Coalition For Labor & Community Solidarity (CLCS), a group that started as the labor solidarity committee of Occupy San Diego, hosted their second labor conference at the Lincoln High School campus.

The conference opened with a plenary of the local workers and organizers for the FIGHT FOR $15 campaign that is putting pressure on private sector jobs to raise workers wages and advocating for raising the minimum wage. The city of San Diego has approved a minimum wage increase to $11.50 per hour, but is being challenged before it even goes into effect. It will likely end up on an upcoming ballot. The FIGHT FOR $15 folks encouraged voters of San Diego city to vote to approve it and continue advocating for $15 per hour in San Diego County.

The 2015 conference included 12 workshops with a diversity of issues and their intersections at work: students, faculty, women's rights, racial justice, environmental justice, union history, democratic union building, social justice unionism, and international and regional worker struggles. --Read More (with Audio)--
