Kensington

Kensington is a suburb in Melbourne, the capital city of the Australian state of Victoria, and is named after Kensington in London. It is located 4 km northwest from Melbourne's Central Business District. Once home to one of the state's major abattoirs and livestock saleyards, Kensington is now largely residential, and has kept it strong ties to its working-class roots.

Its gentrification since the 1970s has given Kensington a community and village feel, with more residents working as professionals or raising young families. Kensington has a population of 9,719 people, with the top 5 occupations being Professionals (41%), Managers (15.2%), Clerical and Administrative Workers (14.4%), Community and Personal Service Workers (8.9%) and Technicians and Trades Workers (7.1%).

The area around Macaulay Road and adjoining Bellair Street is the heart of Kensington, with many cafes, restaurants and bars, as well as supermarkets, real estate agents, medical services and boutique stores.
