2006 was one of the most deadly Everest seasons on record. Record numbers of climbers took advantage of clear weather and attempted to reach the summit. Among their number was Lincoln Hall, an experienced climber who had failed to reach the peak 22 years earlier. This time, Hall made it to the top, but shortly afterwards began to behave irrationally, and collapsed. He was declared dead, his family was informed and the news hit the headlines. But later that night, something happened which scientists cannot explain. Hall was found alive, sitting cross legged on the mountainside. With never before seen footage, exclusive interviews and amazing reconstruction, Miracle on Everest is one of the great survival stories.

Mount Everest (Tibetan: ཇོ་མོ་གླང་མ, Chomolungma or Qomolangma /ˈtʃoʊmoʊˌlɑːŋmə/ CHOH-moh-LAHNG-mə, "Holy Mother"; Chinese: 珠穆朗玛峰; pinyin: Zhūmùlǎngmǎ Fēng; Nepali: सगरमाथा, Sagarmāthā) is the earth's highest mountain, with a peak at 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level. It is located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas. The international border between China and Nepal runs across the precise summit point. Its massif includes neighboring peaks Lhotse, 8,516 m (27,940 ft); Nuptse, 7,855 m (25,771 ft); and Changtse, 7,580 m (24,870 ft).
In 1856, the Great Trigonometric Survey of British India established the first published height of Everest, then known as Peak XV, at 29,002 ft (8,840 m). In 1865, Everest was given its official English name by the Royal Geographical Society upon a recommendation by Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India. Waugh named the mountain after his predecessor in the post, Sir George Everest. Although Tibetans had called Everest "Chomolungma" for centuries, Waugh was unaware of this because Nepal and Tibet were closed to foreigners.

A problem with dying on Mount Everest is that there’s a good chance you’ll stay on the mountain, as it’s simply too hard and dangerous to retrieve dead bodies. This is especially true near the summit, which is also the most dangerous leg of the climb. That means when climbers attempt to scale the world’s highest mountain, they’ll come across some of these bodies. But what’s morbidly fascinating is that these bodies are often used as distance markers to the summit.

With the amount of climbers that have perished on Mount Everest, it is no surprise that people are asking why. What is it that has been causing all of these deaths? Is it too much to handle for some? Or is the drive to get to the top no matter what the cost the main contributing factor? The only way that we can answer this question is to take a look at the evidence that has been collected over the years and piece it together to come to some sort of conclusion.
Before certain studies, it was simply assumed that avalanches and falling ice were a contributing factor in the vast majority of the deaths on Everest. However, whilst this may have been true in some cases, it is definitely not in all of them. Another common assumption is that pulmonary edema is far from uncommon at such a high altitude.
