US B-1 Bomber Take Off to Bomb ISIS - Coalition Against ISIS in Iraq / Syria
US
B-1 Bomber take off from
Qatar Al Udeid Air Base for the operations Inherent
Resolve against
ISIS in
Iraq/
Syria.
The
Rockwell B1 Lancer is a bomber with long range and variable geometry developed by the
United States in the
1970s . It was built outside prototypes,
100 copies and is still in service in 2014.
During the
1960s, after the cancellation of the
Program North American XB-70 Valkyrie , the
Pentagon is conducting several studies for a new strategic bomber capable of penetration at low altitude at high speed.
Despite the signing of several development contracts (reactors in 1964, avionics in
1968), the
Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara refused repeatedly to finance the project designated
AMSA (
Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft), preferring to improve
B-52 and FB -111 already in service in the
US Air Force in the
Strategic Air Command .
It was not until
1969 that the
B-1A project is initiated by the administration of
US President Richard Nixon , just elected. In December of the same year,
North American - Rockwell was selected to develop the new aircraft and
General Electric for reactors. As US Air Force requires a high speed as at low altitude and at high altitude, the choice of a wing of variable geometry is required. The B-1A has three bomb bays in the fuselage and four crew members are placed in a capsule ejection (instead of ejection seats classics).
Three prototypes and pre-production aircraft are ordered. The first B-1A made its maiden flight on
23 December 1974 , and prototype test campaigns are held until the end of
1976, when the US Air Force command the first copies of series despite residual problems in the avionics , which is very complex.
Meanwhile, the cost of the program has increased substantially and the unit price of the B-1A has almost doubled in 5 years. As a result, the program is canceled June 30,
1977 by
President Jimmy Carter , which favors the cruise missiles .
Test flights and the focus is still continuing, to correct defects in avionics, improved reactors and reduce the aircraft's radar signature.
Prototypes exceed
Mach 2 in altitude without difficulty.
In parallel, the US Air Force launches consultation for an aircraft capable of carrying the new cruise missiles type
ALCM , to be dropped from an airplane. In
1980, Rockwell offers a modified
B-1B with improved low-altitude speed, but reduced at high altitude speed, a reinforced structure to increase fuel capacity and equipment and carrying capacity of ALCM, and a signature radar divided by 10 relative to that of B-1A.
On 2
October 1981 , the new administration of
President Ronald Reagan announced that the proposed Rockwell is retained and officially launches the development of new aircraft. Two prototypes of the B-1A are changed and the inaugural flight on 23
March 1983. The first real B-1B leaves the factory in
September 1984. The first aircraft was delivered in June
1985 at the
96th Bomb Wing base
Dyess AFB, Texas . The last copy is delivered in May
1988 and the assembly lines definitely close.
Start the designation was officially awarded the 1st
March 1990 .
Operation Inherent Resolve (
OIR) is the
U.S. military operation name for the military intervention against
ISIL, including both the campaign in Iraq and the campaign in Syria.
Unlike their coalition partners, and unlike previous combat operations, no name was originally given to the 2014 conflict against ISIS by the
U.S. government. The decision to keep the conflict nameless drew considerable media criticism.
U.S. service members remain ineligible for
Campaign Medals and other service decorations due to the continuing ambiguous nature of the continuing U.S. involvement in Iraq.
The United States Central Command (
CENTCOM) news release noted:
According to CENTCOM officials, the name
INHERENT RESOLVE is intended to reflect the unwavering resolve and deep commitment of the U.S. and partner nations in the region and around the globe to eliminate the terrorist group ISIL and the threat they pose to Iraq, the region and the wider international community. It also symbolizes the willingness and dedication of coalition members to work closely with our friends in the region and apply all available dimensions of national power necessary - diplomatic, informational, military, economic - to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL.
