Suspect linked to 8 more break-ins
He left DNA at crime scenes, investigators say
Authorities say a Grand Junction man charged with a series of home burglaries and a break-in and theft at the Museum of the West last fall has been connected to at least eight more burglaries and car break-ins in the Grand Valley from the same time period.
Toby John Quick, 35, was advised in court Wednesday on four counts of second-degree burglary, 10 counts of first-degree criminal trespass and two counts of theft.
Two arrest affidavits allege Quick broke into homes and vehicles at three addresses in the 3100 block of Maddie Court and the 200 block of Meeka Court on Orchard Mesa on Sept. 29 and 30, and five addresses in the 200 block of Red Rim Drive and the 200 block of Red Sand Road on the Redlands on Oct. 18 and 19. Mesa County sheriff’s investigators were able to tie Quick to the break-ins in part because they reportedly found his DNA on items he left behind at the crime scenes.
Mesa County Judge Gretchen Larson ordered Quick held on a $10,000 cash bond in each of the two new cases. Quick is now facing seven pending felony cases and is being held in the Mesa County Jail on a total of $81,000 cash bond.
In the Orchard Mesa cases, investigators learned that various items had been stolen from garages and vehicles, including a GPS unit and sporting goods valued at $2,400 and a bag of roasted chiles. Investigators found an energy drink can in one of the victim’s vehicles, recovered DNA from it and later matched it to Quick. They also lifted fingerprints from a vehicle and matched them to Quick. One of several search warrants executed in connection with the investigation uncovered the GPS unit at a storage unit in the 1400 block of Colorado Avenue associated with Quick, according to an affidavit.
In the Redlands cases, investigators learned that various items valued at more than $1,200 had been stolen from garages and vehicles, including a backpack, bicycle tools, binoculars, keys, credit cards and cash. Investigators found a folding knife beneath a window that was missing a screen and later matched DNA found on the knife to Quick. They also found the backpack at the Colorado Avenue storage unit, according to an affidavit.
Quick and Jeremiah Slaughenhoupt, 25, have been charged in a series of other burglaries and break-ins that occurred around the same time elsewhere in the valley. That includes an Oct. 19 burglary and theft of more than $40,000 in property from a home in the 2200 block of Rock Valley Road, an Oct. 31 burglary involving multiple storage units at Grand Junction Warehouse Association and a Nov. 2 break-in at the Museum of the West in downtown Grand Junction in which three firearms were stolen.
Quick also is facing felony escape charges after he allegedly tried to escape while he was in custody at the Grand Junction Police Department on Nov. 5 by stacking chairs and trying to crawl through the ceiling.
