The "Kannon Waterwheel" [also known as "big circle kun"] is a massive waterwheel build using local cedar. It was built in 1990 [and later rennovated in 2010] as part of the "hometown creation business" in Kuga-gun Mikawa Town.
The waterwheel is used to grind buckwheat flour which is used to make noodles which you can eat at the shop just a few steps from the wheel itself.

Akiyoshido Cave - Yamaguchi Prefecture (日本観光Akiyoshido洞窟 - 山口県)
Akiyoshido Caves is around 40 minutes from Shin-Yamaguchi station by bus and is one of Japan's premier cave systems. If you add a large limestone deposit close to the surface with plenty of groundwater - this is what you should expect!!
The entrance to the caves is around 400 meters of 10 minutes from the main bus stop. Buses seem to leave Shin-Yamaguchi station around once per hour. It costs 1140 Yen one way. Ask the Information Booth on the second floor for the bus timetable which they can give you in English. They also have all the other bus timetables in English - but you need to ask.
It costs 1,200 Yen to enter the caves which are around 9 KM's long in total. The general public can walk through roughly 1 KM of the caves which takes around 30-40 minutes. Note that you can walk back through the cave to get back to the bus stop or walk above ground in around 20 minutes.
The cave system here is quite beautiful and quite easy to access compared to others I have been too. Believe me!! I will say that it's not wheelchair access friendly (or at all) but most people should easily be able to walk through the caves. Note that the return journey through the caves is very easy as it's all downhill!!
Note that there is high humidity at the end of the cave which is strange for winter in Japan. I was at the cave system, shopping and having lunch for a little over 3 hours. Due to inclement weather and some knees saying take an easy day I did not hike around the Akiyoshidai Plateau.

[013] Yamaguchi Hagi Castle
Hagi Castle (萩城), built in 1604, was the ruling home for the Mori Clan, one of the most powerful clans in Japan. At the end of the feudal era (second half of the 19th century), the castle was destroyed. Only its moats and walls remain today.
The castle ruins are located in the Shizuki Park in the northwestern tip of the city. Besides the remains of the castle, the park has a teahouse and shrine. With bicycles allowed in the park, visitors can see people cycling around or taking a leisurely walk. Mount Shizuki is located in the park and visitors can climb to the peak in about 20 minutes.

Hagi - Yamaguchi Prefecture
Hagi is around 80 minutes by bus from Shin-Yamaguchi Station (4 hours by Shinkansen from Tokyo) and is one of the most enjoyable places I have been in Japan. The town itself has a nice mix of temples, shrines, old buildings, parts of a castle and most importantly charm. This is one of the few towns which I feel as though I need much more time to explore than one full day. I went to many of the main sites, but did not get to just soak up the atmosphere of this relaxing town.
My first stop today was Shoin Shrine whch is around 10 minutes by bike from Higashihagi station. It's nothing special, but was quite busy as it was the 1st of January. It was also much busier last night. There are also some important buildings around the shrine which you can look at for free.
The line keeps going....
Tokoji Temple is a further 10 minute bike ride from Shoin Shrine and should cost 300 yen to enter. There was no-one here when I came a nowhere to place money, so it was free for me today. The temple itself is nice enough with it's Chinese influence but the real reason is to some and see the graves of half of the Mori Clan Lords. It really is a sight to behold.
Around 5 minutes from Tokoji temple is 2 old house residences. These homes cost 100 yen each to enter, or 300 Yen for a 9 or 10 home multi-pass which is great value. I also found the houses one of the most enjoyable parts of visiting Hagi. Note that the two here are not the best.
Moving a further 5 minutes closer to Daishoin Temple is the Aiba Waterway. It's really pretty and includes two residences which are worth a visit. Feel free to feed the carp if you have the time...
A further 5 minutes bike ride from Aiba Waterway is Dashoin Temple. It costs 200 yen to enter and it's main temple is currently being restored. However, you don't really come here to look at the temple but to view the second half of the Mori Lord graves. This one is just as impressive, but is slightly different in it's own way.
The Kikuya Residence is 10 minutes bike ride from Dashoin Temple and costs 500 yen to enter. It is the former house of a wealthy merchant and is a national tangible property.
Close by are some further residences which are included in the multi pass. Unfortunately I missed the best 2 as it was past 4PM.
Ensuji temple is in the main castle area and is Japan's only remaining example of Shinto and Buddhism occurring at the same temple. It costs 200 yen to enter.
Hagi castle ruins costs 210 to enter and includes an expansive garden which I could easily spend a lot of time visiting. Coming here during autumn or spring would be the best time to visit.
If I had unlimited time, I would probably spend 3 full days in Hagi. One would be visiting the Residences, one would be visiting the main temples and attractions on the outside of the city and the third would be spending time in the main castle town centre. If your nearby - I suggest you come here for a visit.

This is a phallus for offering to a temple in Mara Kannon Temple, Tawarayama Hot Spring Resort town Yamaguchi Prefecture. The temple is to pray for the penis of the child of a deposed feudal lord who hid out in the region disguised as a girl, which was severed when he was captured. Those that purchase these ceramic phalli usually leave them at the temple (which has much in common with a Shrine) to pray for success in the making of children. There is a brief yearly festival in Golden Week in May.
The shrine where these can be purchased is about 90 minutes drive from the Ajisu Jamboree. It is the tourist destination that recieves the most attention in a backpackers guide to Yamaguchi.

Japan Trip Historic Obaku Sect Temple, Tokoji Temple, Hagi, Yamaguchi11 Moopon
Tokoji Temple (東光寺) is located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Visitors can find its magnificent wooden temple buildings within the forest located east of downtown Hagi. It was founded in 1691and belongs to the Obaku school of Japanese Zen Buddhism.
Most temples of the Obaku sect display an architectural style that has more Chinese features than that of the average Japanese temple. Tokoji Temple is no different. Visitors will notice this right away upon entering the temple through its Chinese style, red entrance gate. Visitors will pass under an even larger wooden gate, the Sanmon Gate, and an old bell tower on their way to the main hall. Further evidence of Chinese Zen architecture style is evident in the Tokoji’s main hall which houses a statue of the historic Buddha (Shaka Nyorai).
An impressive graveyard can be seen behind the temple buildings. Here lies the graveyard of half of the Mori daimyo (feudal lords). The Mori daimyo governed Hagi during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The odd numbered successors of the Mori lords were buried here at Tokoji Temple and the first and even numbered lords were buried at Daishoin Temple. With Tokoji Temple being located in the woods, the atmosphere is quite tranquil and serene.
Access Information:
Tokoji Temple is located about two kilometers southeast of Higashi-Hagi Station.
**By bicycle: about 10-15 minutes (slightly uphill)
**On foot: about 30 minutes.
**By Bus: from Higashi-Hagi and Hagi Stations please take "Maru Bus" East Loop
Hours: 8:30 to 17:00

Hours: 8:30 to 17:00
Closed: Opened all year round
Admission: 300 yen

The Furusato Ikoi no Ie accommodation facility is located on Oomishima Island on the Shimanami Kaido, surrounded by nature.
Munakata Elementary School closed in 1985 and was renovated to become this accommodation facility.
There are many sizes of guest rooms, from large former classrooms where everyone can stay together like a school field trip, or private rooms for a more subdued experience.
A beautiful beach is located just outside the building.
The building was used as a location for the film, "Her Island, My Island".
Listen to the sound of the waves at Oomishima Furusato Ikoi no Ie and relax and forget about the passage of time.

Japan Travel: Kintai-kyo Bridge--beauty, history, architecture Iwakuni, Yamaguchi 03 Moopon
Known as one of Japan’s top three great bridges, Kintai-kyo Bridge is Iwakuni’s most famous landmark inviting both domestic and international tourists to partake in its beauty. Located on the foothills of Mount Yokoyama, this completely wooden bridge is made without using any nails. Visitors can enjoy the traditional Japanese beauty this 5 arched bridge presents as they cross-over to the other side of the Nishiki River.
The construction of the Kintai-kyo Bridge, commissioned by Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, the third feudal lord of Iwakuni, began after strong currents demolished a bridge used to cross the Nishiki River. The bridge was completed in 1673 and stood for almost 400 years until a violent typhoon came to Iwakuni in 1950. The current bridge was completed in 1953 by residents, determined to recreate their beloved bridge.
In the past, only samurais were permitted to cross this bridge. However, nowadays anyone is allowed to cross the bridge for a small fee.
Access Information:
*20 mins by bus from Iwakuni station with a cost of 250 yen one way. Buses are available every 5 to 15 minutes.
*15 mins by bus from Shin-Iwakuni station with a cost of 290 yen one way. Two or three buses are available every hour.
Hours: Always open
Closed: All Year Round
Admission: 300 yen (round trip)
940 yen (bridge, castle and ropeway combination ticket)
