Maj Richard Winters, whose WWII heroism was captured in the TV mini-series Band of Brothers, has died at the age of 92. Maj Winters' death was confirmed by a family friend, and followed a long battle with Parkinson's disease. The 2001 HBO/BBC series charted the exploits of a company of US paratroopers from the Normandy invasion to the end of World War II. Maj Winters, of Hershey, Pennsylvania, had asked that news of his death be withheld until after his funeral. The men Winters led expressed their admiration for their company commander after learning of his death. William Guarnere, 88, said what he remembers about Winters was "great leadership." Major Richard D. Winters, an American hero, passed away on January 2, 2011. He was immortalized by the famous Brecourt Manor assault he led, and by Stephen Ambrose's "Band of Brothers" followed by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielbergs' "Band of Brothers". Richard D. "Dick" Winters (January 21, 1918 – January 2, 2011) was a United States Army officer and decorated war veteran. For a time he commanded Company "E", 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, during World War II, eventually rising to command of the entire 2nd Battalion. Winters parachuted into Normandy in the early hours of D-Day, and fought across France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and eventually Germany. Later in the war, Winters rose to command the 2nd Battalion. Following the German surrender, he left the 506th and was then stationed in France where senior officers were needed to oversee the return home. "Band of Brothers" fame Major Richard "Dick" Winters and well known D-Day commander of Easy Company, 506 PIR, 101st Airborne Division Korean War era helmet is being gifted by Robert Hoffman to the Wilson History & Research Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, a 501c3 charitable foundation founded by Robby Wilson. Major Winters wore this helmet after he was recalled to service for the Korean War, serving as a regimental training officer of the 364th Infantry Regiment stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, from 1951-1952. The helmet is a late WWII type with hinged chinstrap loops and a latter production heat lot number of 1189C (around early 1945).
