La Marseillaise, sung by Mireille Mathieu. American English subtitles.
Performance at the foot of the Eiffel Tower for the tower's 100th anniversary in 1989 and televised, live, to the French nation. Mireille Mathieu sings La Marseillaise, the national anthem of France, written in 1792 and adopted as the rallying call to the French Revolution. According to reports at the time of this performance, "Mathieu sang the anthem so grandly and shrewdly that tears welled up across the country, many patriotic citizens even needed medical treatment." Ten years later, in 1999, she was awarded the Medal of the French Legion of Honor. Mireille Mathieu turned 78 in 2024 and continues to perform.

Marseille, France – February 24 – A powerful explosion occurred near the Russian consulate in the southern French city of Marseille, raising serious concerns about a possible terrorist attack. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
According to Belarusian news outlet NEXTA, initial reports indicate that unidentified attackers threw two Molotov cocktails into the garden within the consulate's premises. A stolen vehicle was also found near the scene, though no injuries have been confirmed.
Stanislav Oransky, Russia’s Consul General in Marseille, verified the explosion, stating that firefighters had arrived at the site. However, French authorities have yet to officially confirm details regarding the attack, according to the local newspaper La Marseillaise. French broadcaster BFMTV reported that around 30 firefighters and police officers were deployed to the scene.
Russia has labeled the incident a potential terrorist act. Speaking to TASS, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called on France to conduct a full-scale investigation and enhance security measures for Russian diplomatic missions.
“The explosions at the Russian consulate in Marseille bear all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack. We demand that France carry out a comprehensive and swift investigation, as well as reinforce security for Russia’s foreign missions,” Zakharova stated.
The attack took place on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and follows the European Union’s announcement of its 16th round of sanctions against Moscow. Just last week, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) warned that its diplomatic missions in Europe could be targeted by Ukrainian-backed “terrorist attacks.”
The situation remains tense as authorities continue to assess the severity of the incident.

The Marseillaise was a very popular revolutionary song an anthem to freedom a patriotic call to fight against tyranny and foreign invasion. The French National Convention adopted it as the Republic's anthem in 1795The song acquired its nickname after being sung in Paris by volunteers from Marseille marching to the capitalThe song is the first example of the "European march" anthemic style. The anthem's evocative melody and lyrics have led to its widespread use as a song of revolution and its incorporation into many pieces of classical and popular music.
Nationalhymne in Frankreich
