The Magic of Line: Gustav Klimt's Artistic Process
The starkness of a hand-drawn line—with its potential for lyrical beauty—is essential to Gustav Klimt's art. Through line, Klimt sought to convey the essence of the human form, and the nature of human existence. As an artist he wanted to explore universal emotions like suffering, hope and love; and it was through the daily practice of life-drawing that he cultivated his ideas. Learn more about Kli

Nina Levett has recently been featured in the daily newspaper "Die Presse". She participated in a group interview with three other Austrian designers and artists. The interview took place at Madame Tussaud's in Vienna, allowing a group photograph of the group to be taken near the wachs statue of Gustav Klimt.
Gustav Klimt was a very interesting personality. He was a bachelor right until his early death in 1918. It is said that he had about 12 children with different women. Mostly he had affairs with the women he painted. But one of his life partners was the fashion designer Emilie Flöge.
He started his very successful life as an artist by studying at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts.
He then proceeded to make murals with his talented brother Ernst and their friend Franz Matsch. The trio was very successful and painted freskos for many famous buildings such as the Burgtheater in Vienna. His father and brother died in the same year and Klimt took financial responsibility for himself and his family (he was one of seven children).
He became very successful when his artworks were liberated from stylistic and thematical conventions, but he was also subject to a lot of criticism which led to him withdrawing from one of his biggest commissions: three paintings for the Vienna university. After this scandal he refused to work for the Austrian State again. He was "punished" by never being made professor at the famous Vienna Art University which was a major honour at the time.
Even though there always was a lot of controversy about his work Klimt is one of the most famous Austrian painters to this day. If you enter the phrase "most expensive art" into the Google search machine you will find two of his paintings among the most expensive artworks ever sold to this day.

Altmann gave her testimony to the USC Shoah Foundation on March 31, 1996, nearly a decade before she won the case Republic of Austria v. Altmann, brought before the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2004. The painting was subsequently sold to the Neue Galerie in New York City for $135 million, making it one of the five most valuable paintings in the world today.

Simon Curtis has only directed two feature films — 2011’s “My Week With Marilyn” and now “Woman in Gold” but he certainly knows his way around a true story. Woman in Gold stars Helen Mirren as plays Maria Altmann, a woman from an aristocratic Jewish family in Vienna — forced to flee Austria after the country was taken over by the Nazis in 1938. Her family owned an incredible collection of artwork, notably an iconic painting known as “The Woman in Gold” — actually a portrait of her aunt, Adele Bloch-Bauer, painted by famed artist Gustav Klimt. That painting, along with all of the Altmann’s other works of art were confiscated by the Nazis. The film relates Altmann’s long and often frustrating journey to reclaim the paintings — especially the portrait of her aunt — in recent years.
Altmann and her husband had immigrated to the U.S. during World War II and eventually settled in Los Angeles. Ryan Reynolds plays Randol Schoenberg, the young lawyer who helped her in the long legal struggle to regain the artwork — who himself was the grandson of famed Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg. Bonnie Laufer (@movi_boni) spoke with Simon Curtis during a stop in Toronto to discuss the film, shooting in Austria, his use of our talented Canadian acting pool ( Ryan Reynolds and Tatiana Maslany) his famous wife Elizabeth McGovern ( Cora on Downton Abbey) and much more!

http://www.Warholian.com
Artist Chor Boogie sat down for an interview with Warholian.com to discuss how he started as a graffiti street artist and has continued to evolve his style. Chor's use of color is a particularly strong point in his work, and we here at Warholian.com have grown into even bigger fans on analyzing his pieces further. With touches of Gustav Klimt and a street art style not seen elsewhere, Chor Boogie is sets a new bar in spray paint and has transcended the aesthetic into new worlds of visual candy.

The World's Most Expensive Paintingstext Art critic Alastair Sooke tracks down the ten most expensive paintings to sell at auction, and investigates the stories behind the astronomic prices art can reach. Gaining access to the glittering world of the super-rich, Sooke discovers why the planet's richest people want to spend their millions on art. Featuring works by Picasso, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Klimt and Rubens, Sooke enters a world of secrecy and rivalry, passion and power. Highlights include a visit to the art-crammed home of millionaire author Lord Archer; a rare interview with the man at the heart of the sale of the most expensive old master of all time; privileged access to auctioneers Christie's; and a glimpse of the world of the Russian oligarchs. These revelatory journeys allow Sooke to present an eye-opening view of the super wealthy, and their motivations as collectors of the world's great art treasures.

1989 television interview of Corey Barksdale at age 17 by WSMV Nashville newscaster. The interview features Corey as a up and coming African-American artist carrying on the tradition of great African-American artist from the Harlem Renaissance era. The tradition of artist such as Aaron Douglas, Palmer Hayden, William H. Johnson, Lois Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence, Archibald Motley Jr., etc.
Nashville connection to Harlem Renaissance:Aaron Douglas, Fisk University, Carl Van Vechten Gallery.
When he died in 1946, Alfred Stieglitz, the great photographer and tireless promoter of modern art, left his estate to his wife, the painter Georgia O'Keeffe. His work as a photographer she shrewdly distributed to the large American museums that could be counted on to secure his reputation. But a sizable part of his art collection O'Keeffe deposited in a less predictable place. At the urging of a friend, the Harlem Renaissance writer Carl Van Vechten, she gave 97 works to Fisk University, the historically black school in Nashville. And she threw in a few of her own. One of those was Radiator Building-- Night, New York, 1927, a painting we now recognize as a key moment in her career.

Years passed, during which Fisk's endowment dwindled while the art market went into warp drive. In 2005 the school's president, Hazel O'Leary, came up with an idea that could not only pay to renovate the frayed campus gallery where the Stieglitz Collection has languished but also pump millions of dollars into Fisk's general budget. Why not sell off just a bit of that famous art? But when the school moved to bring Radiator Building to market, it triggered what became a lawsuit by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, N.M., which moved to block the sale on the grounds that it violated the terms of the painter's bequest. In February the museum offered Fisk a deal. It could sell Radiator Building, but only to the museum, and for $7 million, a price much below what it would go for in the current art market. If Fisk said yes, the museum promised not to block the sale of another painting from the collection, a Marsden Hartley, on the open market. Fisk said yes.
That was where things stood until April 5, when Tennessee attorney general Robert Cooper, whose office has the power to approve or disapprove charitable arrangements, rejected the arranged sale because of the difference between $7 million and what Fisk could get on the open market. Now lawyers for both sides plan to sit down in a judge's chambers to see if a new deal can be worked out. Eventually, Fisk fully expects to be taking something to market.
Money has always been an obsession in the art world, but lately it's at the heart of constant disputes over "deaccessioning"--what museums and other institutions do when they liquidate part of their collections. Though as a practice deaccessioning is nothing new, the outlandishly overheated art market of recent years has made it newly irresistible. At a time when a Jackson Pollock or a Gustav Klimt can go for about $140 million, it's no surprise that one institution after another has begun to see its "permanent collection" as just so much movable merchandise. But art is no ordinary inventory. Briskly disposing of it doesn't always sit well with people who like to visit the art, to say nothing of the people who donate it and who like to suppose that their gifts won't be swept out the door a few years down the road.
