Elmore James (January 27, 1918 – May 24, 1963) was an American blues guitarist, singer, songwriter and band leader. He was known as King of the Slide Guitar, but he was also noted for his use of loud amplification and his stirring voice.
James was born Elmore Brooks in Richland, Holmes County, Mississippi, the illegitimate son of 15-year-old Leola Brooks, a field hand. His father was probably Joe Willie "Frost" James, who moved in with Leola, and so Elmore took this as his name. Elmore began making music at the age of 12 using a simple one-string instrument ("diddley bow" or "jitterbug") strung up on a shack wall. As a teen he was playing at local dances under the names Cleanhead and Joe Willie James. His first marriage, c. 1942, was to Minnie Mae. He subsequently married at least twice more.
James was strongly influenced by Robert Johnson, as well as by Kokomo Arnold and Tampa Red. James recorded several of Tampa's songs, and even inherited from his band two of his famous "Broomdusters", "Little" Johnny Jones (piano) and Odie Payne (drums). There is a dispute as to whether Robert Johnson or James wrote James' trademark song, "Dust My Broom".
James is a common English surname and given name:

"Dust My Broom" is a blues song originally recorded as "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom" by American blues artist Robert Johnson in 1936. It is a solo performance in the Delta blues-style with Johnson's vocal accompanied by his acoustic guitar. As with many of his songs, it is based on earlier blues songs, the earliest of which has been identified as "I Believe I'll Make a Change", recorded by the Sparks brothers as "Pinetop and Lindberg" in 1932. Johnson's guitar work features an early use of a boogie rhythm pattern, which is seen as a major innovation, as well as a repeating triplets figure. "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom" was issued before blues records were tracked by recording industry trade publications and, as with most of Johnson's recordings, has not been otherwise identified as a big seller at the time.
However, it is Elmore James' 1951 recording as "Dust My Broom" that "made it the classic as we know it", according to blues historian Gerard Herzhaft. James' slide guitar adaptation of Johnson's triplet figure has been identified as one of the most famous blues guitar riffs and has inspired many rock performers. The song has become a blues standard, with numerous renditions by a variety of musicians. It also has been selected for the Blues Foundation Blues Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame, and the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry.

One of our greatest blues artists and composers, and most of us don't even know his name. Listen to the original "The Sky Is Crying" from the composer. (Elmore James wrote the song). He passed away tragically when he was on the verge of the 60's blues revival. Rock and blues owe him a great debt. Elmore James, King of the Slide Guitar: January 27, 1918 - May 24, 1963. He is missed.
Elmore James versions[edit] Several versions of "It Hurts Me Too" were recorded in the 1940s and 1950s, including those by Stick McGhee and Big Bill Broonzy. When Elmore James recorded it in 1957, he (or Chief's owner, Mel London, who is credited on the release) supplied some of the lyrics that are most familiar today: You say you hurting, you almost lost your mind The man you love, he hurts you all the time When things go wrong, go wrong with you It hurts me too James' 1957 Chief version did not appear in the charts, but after he recorded the song again in late 1962 or early 1963 for the Fire/Fury/Enjoy group of labels, it became a hit. The song used the same lyrics as his earlier version, but featured more prominent slide guitar work. When it was released in 1965, two years after James...

The writing credit for "Dust my Broom" is a little fuzzy. It has traditionally gone to Robert Johnson, but publishing of Blues songs from the 20s & 30s was almost non existent. The song was popularized by Elmore James "King of the Slide Guitar".

Look Over Yonder Wall - well what can I say? This is a funky version of Elmore James' song. King phrases just in front of the changes. I am told that this adds tension - a trick used by Clapton & Bloomfield in later recordings. My guitarist friends tell me that he sometimes races ahead by a full bar or more (I'm a drummer, so I have no idea!). He even plays behind his head - something we can see Stevie Ray Vaughan (Live @ The Mocambo) & Joe Bonamassa do much later on. And what about the 70's clothing! I remember it well because I lived through it. Freddie was a real showman & a gentle giant of a man. Freddie was also a great influence on Eric Clapton(http://www.ericclapton.com/ ) and many others who have followed Clapton & were Clapton's contemporaries, such as Mick Taylor (http://www.mi...
