Composed January 1918 in Copenhagen. Fair copy completed February 25 1918. Revised 1932. Performed for the first time at a matine of composition at the Royal Danish Academy of Music January 12 1919under the title "Komposition".
Significant here is especially the progammatic second movement, originally entitled "Tog i det fjerne", which after the first performance caused a weekly magazine to inquire whether this was intended as a joke. Langgaard denied this - he had sought to express a mood, a feeling of departure. And he had merely made the musical expression more explicit than the audience may have expected "The music which permanently moves in the higher regions with "upturned" eyes without connection to the more cheerful life - which does not always dream the moonligth fantasies of a callow youth - is false and superfluous." Noteworthy is also the final chord of the work: instead of the usual major or minor chord Langgaard shocks with an augmented fourth - the interval which the theorists of the Middle Ages called the Devil in music!

Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach and attraction destination on the Atlantic Ocean in southwestern Brooklyn, New York City. The site was formerly an outer barrier island, but became partially connected to the mainland by landfill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island is well known as the site of amusement parks and a seaside resort. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and years of neglect. In recent years, the area has seen the opening of MCU Park stadium and has become home to the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league baseball team, as well as the opening of a new amusement park among several adjacent ones...
Due to Coney Island's location—easily reached from Manhattan and other boroughs of New York City, yet distant enough to suggest a proper vacation—it began attracting holidaymakers in the 1830s and 1840s, when carriage roads and steamship services reduced travel time from a half-day journey to just two hours.
The original Coney Island Hotel was constructed in 1829, with The Brighton Hotel, Manhattan Beach Hotel, and Oriental Hotel opening soon after, with each trying to provide an increasing level of elegance. Coney Island became a major resort destination after the American Civil War, as excursion railroads and the Coney Island & Brooklyn Railroad streetcar line reached the area in the 1860s, and the Iron steamboat company arrived in 1881. The two Iron Piers served as docks for the steamboats until they were destroyed in the 1911 Dreamland fire.
When the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company electrified the steam railroads and connected Brooklyn to Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge at the beginning of the 20th century, Coney Island soon turned from a resort to a location accessible to day-trippers from New York City, especially those escaping the summer heat.
Charles I. D. Looff, a Danish woodcarver, built the first carousel at Coney Island in 1876. It was installed at Vandeveer's bath-house complex at West 6th Street and Surf Avenue, which later became known as Balmer's Pavilion. The carousel consisted of hand-carved horses and other animals standing two abreast, with a drummer and a flute player providing the music. A tent-top provided protection from the weather. The fare was five cents.
From 1885 to 1896, the Coney Island Elephant was the first sight to greet immigrants arriving in New York, who would see it before the Statue of Liberty became visible.
In 1915 the Sea Beach Line was upgraded to a subway line. This was followed by upgrades to the other former excursion roads, and the opening of the New West End Terminal in 1919, thus ushering in Coney Island's busiest era.
Nathan's Famous original hot dog stand opened on Coney Island in 1916 and quickly became a landmark. An annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest has been held there annually on July 4 since its opening, but has only attracted broad attention and television coverage since the late 1990s.
After World War II, the appeal of Coney Island started to lessen for several reasons. Air conditioning in movie theaters and subsequently in homes, provided a cool escape in summer without going to the beach. The advent of automobiles provided relatively easy access to the less crowded and more appealing Long Island state parks, especially Jones Beach State Park. Luna Park closed in 1946, after a series of fires. There was an increase in prostitution in the area, and the New York street gang problems of the 1950s also spilled over into Coney Island. The presence of threatening youths did not impact the beach-goers, but it discouraged visitors to the rides and concessions, which were staples of the Coney Island economy. The local economy was dealt a further severe blow by the 1964 closing of Steeplechase Park, the last of the major amusement parks...

The Best of Achille-Claude Debussy (22 August 1862 -- 25 March 1918)
Along with Maurice Ravel, Debussy was one of the most prominent figures associated with Impressionist music, though he himself intensely disliked the term when applied to his compositions. In France, he was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1903. Debussy was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and his use of non-traditional scales and chromaticism influenced many composers who followed. Debussy's music is noted for its sensory content and frequent eschewing of tonality. The French literary style of his period was known as Symbolism, and this movement directly inspired Debussy both as a composer and as an active cultural participant.

Klimt 1918
Klimt 1918 is an indie/alternative rock band from Rome, Italy.
Biography
Klimt 1918 was started in 1999 by brothers Marco and Paolo Soellner, after the split of their former band, Another Day (a death metal act). Marco's newly discovered love for bands like The Cure, Bauhaus and Joy Division, led him to incorporate new influences in his songwriting. The next year, after completing the line-up with bass player Davide Pesola and lead guitarist Francesco Tumbarello, the band released its first effort, Secession Makes Post-Modern Music, which was recorded by Novembre's drummer, Giuseppe Orlando, a close friend of the band. The demo received good reviews from specialized press and caught the attention of My Kingdom Music, a newborn Italian independent label, with which the band signed a deal for two releases. Their debut full-length, Undressed Momento, came out in 2003; during the recording sessions, guitar player Francesco Tumbarello left the band, being replaced by Alessandro Pace, a well-known name in Rome's underground metal scene and a long-time friend of the band. Undressed Momento marked an evolution in Klimt 1918's sound, which became more melodic and emotional, losing part of its metal heritage; the album received critical praise from reviewers all over Europe, and reached the first place in Orkus' Top Chart. One year later, the band signed a new contract with German cult label, Prophecy Productions, and began working on a new full-length. Dopoguerra was released in 2005 and featured a more mature and personal sound; the album was once again praised by both critics and press, and was supported by a European tour, the first for the band. The band said the album "was recorded during the hot summer 2004, with sound man/producer Giuseppe Orlando. The one-month session was long and difficult, but worked out better than anyone could have hoped."

Taylor Swift
Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter. Raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 14 to pursue a career in country music. She signed with the independent label Big Machine Records and became the youngest songwriter ever signed by the Sony/ATV Music publishing house. The release of Swift's eponymous debut album in 2006 marked the start of her career as a country music singer. Her third single, "Our Song", made her the youngest person to single-handedly write and perform a number-one song on the Hot Country Songs chart.
Swift's second album, Fearless, was released in 2008. Buoyed by the pop crossover success of the singles "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me", Fearless became the best-selling album of 2009 in the United States. The album won four Grammy Awards, making Swift the youngest ever Album of the Year winner. Swift's third and fourth albums, 2010's Speak Now and 2012's Red, both sold more than one million copies within the first week of their U.S release. Speak Now's "Mean" won two Grammy Awards, while Red's singles "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and "I Knew You Were Trouble" were successful worldwide. Swift's fifth album, the pop-focused 1989, was released in 2014 and sold more copies in its opening week than any album in the previous 12 years, making Swift the first and only act to have three albums sell more than one million copies in the opening release week. Its singles "Shake It Off", "Blank Space", and "Bad Blood" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album would go on to win three awards at the 2016 Grammys including Album of the Year making Swift the first and thus far only female artist to receive the award twice.

Composed January 1918 in Copenhagen. Fair copy completed February 25 1918. Revised 1932. Performed for the first time at a matine of composition at the Royal Danish Academy of Music January 12 1919under the title "Komposition".
Significant here is especially the progammatic second movement, originally entitled "Tog i det fjerne", which after the first performance caused a weekly magazine to inquire whether this was intended as a joke. Langgaard denied this - he had sought to express a mood, a feeling of departure. And he had merely made the musical expression more explicit than the audience may have expected "The music which permanently moves in the higher regions with "upturned" eyes without connection to the more cheerful life - which does not always dream the moonligth fantasies of a callow youth - is false and superfluous." Noteworthy is also the final chord of the work: instead of the usual major or minor chord Langgaard shocks with an augmented fourth - the interval which the theorists of the Middle Ages called the Devil in music!

Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach and attraction destination on the Atlantic Ocean in southwestern Brooklyn, New York City. The site was formerly an outer barrier island, but became partially connected to the mainland by landfill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island is well known as the site of amusement parks and a seaside resort. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and years of neglect. In recent years, the area has seen the opening of MCU Park stadium and has become home to the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league baseball team, as well as the opening of a new amusement park among several adjacent ones...
Due to Coney Island's location—easily reached from Manhattan and other boroughs of New York City, yet distant enough to suggest a proper vacation—it began attracting holidaymakers in the 1830s and 1840s, when carriage roads and steamship services reduced travel time from a half-day journey to just two hours.
The original Coney Island Hotel was constructed in 1829, with The Brighton Hotel, Manhattan Beach Hotel, and Oriental Hotel opening soon after, with each trying to provide an increasing level of elegance. Coney Island became a major resort destination after the American Civil War, as excursion railroads and the Coney Island & Brooklyn Railroad streetcar line reached the area in the 1860s, and the Iron steamboat company arrived in 1881. The two Iron Piers served as docks for the steamboats until they were destroyed in the 1911 Dreamland fire.
When the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company electrified the steam railroads and connected Brooklyn to Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge at the beginning of the 20th century, Coney Island soon turned from a resort to a location accessible to day-trippers from New York City, especially those escaping the summer heat.
Charles I. D. Looff, a Danish woodcarver, built the first carousel at Coney Island in 1876. It was installed at Vandeveer's bath-house complex at West 6th Street and Surf Avenue, which later became known as Balmer's Pavilion. The carousel consisted of hand-carved horses and other animals standing two abreast, with a drummer and a flute player providing the music. A tent-top provided protection from the weather. The fare was five cents.
From 1885 to 1896, the Coney Island Elephant was the first sight to greet immigrants arriving in New York, who would see it before the Statue of Liberty became visible.
In 1915 the Sea Beach Line was upgraded to a subway line. This was followed by upgrades to the other former excursion roads, and the opening of the New West End Terminal in 1919, thus ushering in Coney Island's busiest era.
Nathan's Famous original hot dog stand opened on Coney Island in 1916 and quickly became a landmark. An annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest has been held there annually on July 4 since its opening, but has only attracted broad attention and television coverage since the late 1990s.
After World War II, the appeal of Coney Island started to lessen for several reasons. Air conditioning in movie theaters and subsequently in homes, provided a cool escape in summer without going to the beach. The advent of automobiles provided relatively easy access to the less crowded and more appealing Long Island state parks, especially Jones Beach State Park. Luna Park closed in 1946, after a series of fires. There was an increase in prostitution in the area, and the New York street gang problems of the 1950s also spilled over into Coney Island. The presence of threatening youths did not impact the beach-goers, but it discouraged visitors to the rides and concessions, which were staples of the Coney Island economy. Frederick Theodore Albert Delius, CH (29 January 1862 -- 10 June 1934) was an English composer. Born in the north of England to a prosperous mercantile family, he resisted attempts to recruit him to commerce. He was sent to Florida in the United States in 1884 to manage an orange plantation. There he soon neglected his managerial duties, and in 1886 returned to Europe. Having been influenced by African-American music during his short stay in Florida, he began composing. After a brief period of formal musical study in Germany beginning in 1886, he embarked on a full-time career as a composer in Paris and then in nearby Grez-sur-Loing, where he and his wife Jelka lived for the rest of their lives, except during the First World War.
Delius's first successes came in Germany, where Hans Haym and other conductors promoted his music from the late 1890s. In Delius's native Britain, it was 1907 before his music made regular appearances in concert programmes, after Thomas Beecham took it up. Beecham conducted the full premiere of A Mass of Life in London in 1909 (he had premiered Part II in Germany in 1908); he staged the opera A Village Romeo and Juliet at Covent Garden in 1910; and he mounted a six-day Delius festival in London in 1929, as well as making gramophone recordings of many of Delius's works. After 1918 Delius began to suffer the effects of syphilis, contracted during his earlier years in Paris. He became paralysed and blind, but completed some late compositions between 1928 and 1932 with the aid of an amanuensis, Eric Fenby.
The lyricism in Delius's early compositions reflected the music he had heard in America and the influences of European composers such as Edvard Grieg and Richard Wagner. As his skills matured, he developed a style uniquely his own, characterised by his individual orchestration and his uses of chromatic harmony. Delius's music has been only intermittently popular, and often subject to critical attacks. The Delius Society, formed in 1962 by his more dedicated followers, continues to promote knowledge of the composer's life and works, and sponsors the annual Delius Prize competition for young musicians.

One of the finest Arbuckle Keaton comedies, The Cook was released 1918 by Comique Films. Filmed entirely along the Pike and on the Silver Spray Pier in Long Beach, California. Most of the music in the soundtrack was generated by a Fotoplayer. a special kind of player piano used in moviehouses in the World War I era. A faithful attempt was made to give the viewer of this old film a taste of the same music that the audience in 1918 would have heard if you were in one of the 24000 theaters that owned a Fotoplayer.

A wonderful chamber work for piano and string quartet by English composer Edward Elgar (1857-1934), which he dedicated to Ernest Newman, music critic of the Manchester Guardian. According to Alice Elgar, the atmospheric, ominous quality of the music is a reflection of the natural setting of Elgar's Sussex cottage at Flexham Park near Brinkwells, where he stayed during the summer of 1918. Indeed, Elgar's biographer W. H. "Billy" Reed has compared Flexham Park to the "Wolf's Glen" in Weber's opera "Der Freischütz". Some musicologists have connected Elgar's description of the opening movement as "ghostly stuff" and hints in Alice Elgar's description that the work might have a programmatic basis to conclude that Edward Bulwer-Lytton's occult novel "A Strange Story" forms a "quasi-programme" underlying the Quintet, as Elgar had ordered a few Bulwer-Lytton novels from the London Library at the time. Whether or not this is true, the Quintet's purely musical content is fascinating enough to merit close listening and analysis (which is why I've provided the score in the video).
