Plot: Promoted and advertised as "The Million Dollar Serial", most of which appears to have been spent on advertising and the most elaborate pressbook ever put out by Universal on a serial (or 95% of their feature films for that matter), Universal's 51st sound-era serial (following "Sky Raiders" and before "Sea Raiders" and, to quote the late Oliver Drake who wrote the original story,..."we were lucky they didn't call it 'Land Raiders'), "Riders of Death Valley" remains a favorite for the 7-12 year-old kids who saw in on original release in 1941, and a major disappointment for those who came later and never saw it in the 35mm version shown on a screen in a 350-seat grind-house theatre, and now question what all the excitement was about. Hey, you had to have been there. Actually, it is just one long prolonged chase after another for the most part and, even worse, it is usually the 5-6 good guys running from 2-3 of the bad guys (which even had eight-year-old kids of 1941 wondering what's up with this?) and has lots of stock-footage cliffhangers from earlier Universal western serials and features. The plot has Jim Benton (Dick Foran) as the head of a vigilante group, known as the Riders of Death Valley, organized to protect the miners from the take-over plots hatched by Joseph Kirby (James Blaine) and Rance Davis (Monte Blue.) They hire Wolf Reade (Charles Bickford) and his motley crew to do their dirty work, and spend most of their time lamenting their choice of sub-contractee as Reade deals his employees as much misery as he does the "Riders" and miners. Benton's "Riders" are Tombstone (Buck Jones), Pancho (Leo Carrillo), Smokey (Noah Beery, Jr, who is a no-show in most episodes), Borax Bill (Big Boy Williams) and Tex (Glenn Strange.) Always worth watching just for Foran, Jones, Carillo, and Jeanne Kelly (Jean Brooks), and especially if one flash forwards the chase scenes, which will serve to basically make a seven chapter offering out of the original 15.
Keywords: 1880s, ambush, archive-footage, avalanche, b-movie, b-western, barfly, bartender, borax-mining, bridge
Genres:

I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY (1949) by Hank Williams
One of my favourite
Hank Williams songs.
Hank recorded this track on 30
August 1949 in
Ohio. With him were ace studio musicians:
Zeke Turner (electric guitar),
Louis Innes (rhythm guitar),
Jerry Byrd (steel guitar),
Ernie Newton (bass), and
Tommy Jackson (fiddle). They were not part of
the Drifting Cowboys who toured with Hank at that time (although a couple did do stints with them). The
Drifting Cowboys did record with Hank on many other sessions.
According to
Colin Escott who wrote a biography on Hank "Here is the chill of the void that would become one of the hallmarks of Hank's writing. It is the most oft cited example of Hank Williams the hillbilly poet, but its poetic form comes from the fact that it was originally intended to be spoken, not sung.
Acuff-Rose staff writer Vic McAlpin said that Hank had written it for his first session of recitations slated for
January 1950, but at some
point he changed his mind. "I think ol' Hank needs to record this," he told McAlpin. Hank was concerned that some of the lines might sound self-consciously artsy and alienate his audience, but, as he so often did, he tried out the song on friends, fellow performers, and
Fred Rose, and let them convince him that he had excelled".
Veteran Nashville songwriter
Jimmy Rule recalls: "One day I was over at Acuff-Rose, our mutual publisher, and Hank handed me a piece of paper and said, "Do you think people will understand what I'm trying to say when I say this?" The line was 'Did you ever see a robin weep when leaves begin to die?
It's because he's lost the will to live; I'm so lonesome I could cry'. Hank had this lonesome streak, and I think it was largely caused by his marital problems. I think he wrote it out of a feeling of loneliness that stayed very much with him. He would be the natural person to write 'I'm so lonesome I could cry'."
I have done my own slideshow video of this song, using as many images of Hank singing that I could find. Also included a few images of the musicians who played on this session, Jerry Byrd and Tommy Jackson. I hope that people not into Hank might take the time to explore his music.
Update: Oct 2014
I see from
Hollywood Reporter that a new biopic on Hank (based on the Colin Escott book) has just started production in
Louisiana. It is called '
I Saw the Light' and will star
Tom Hiddleston and
Elizabeth Olsen as Hank and his wife
Audrey . Thought Hank fans might be interested.
Comments are invited.

Hank Williams Singing "Kaw-Liga"
Kaw-liga, was a wooden indian standing by the door
He fell in love with an indian maid over in the antique store
