The
Wildcats lost the first
USSSA pool play game
4-3 to the Cougars, a top-ten team in the country at this age level, including a most unusual triple play, ending on an appeal where both umpires called the runner out at 3rd for leaving early on the tag. The next day, they lost
8-5 to the
Astros, the current number 2 team in the country, after leading for much of the game.
Jason "Wojo" Woszczynski hit a home run in the first game, while Zach Huie launched an opposite-field bomb vs the Astros in the 2nd game, tying the game. Also,
Matthew "
Cheech"
Link played right field against the hard-hitting Astros as good as any body could, making 6 running catches, and also laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt.
Thomas Maggiola,
David Thigpen, and
Chris Rolick pitched stellarly, with David exhibiting some great pickoff moves.
Catchers David Thigpen and
Forrest Wilson each threw out runners trying to steal, and were exceptional behind the plate. Thomas "
T-Bird" McKenzie was on the receiving end of David's pickoff throw at 2nd base, and was originally called safe on a play, but was somehow "magically" overturned by the umpire who had the worst view of the play in favor of the Astros, erasing what would have been the go-ahead run.
Johnny "JC" Chiles had a hit against each team, and played his usual high level of defense at first base. Chris Rolick started a most unusual triple play by
making a catch in left field, throwing the ball into 3rd base where Wojo tagged out the runner trying to advance to third, and then completed when Thomas "
Big Cat" Maggiola appealed third on the runner who tagged but left early according to both umps.
Shortstop Walker Sasser had a busy two games, getting lots of action, and looking smooth in turning the second leg of a double play. He also drilled a deep double that one-hopped the fence in right field.
Alec Scott played his usual brand of great defense, making a nice catch while in left field.
Marshall Adams had a solid hit and stolen base against the Cougars, and maybe most importantly, keeps the dugout pumped up during every game.
