Giza (Coptic: ⲅⲓⲍⲁ Gee-zah, Arabic: الجيزة Al-Ğīzah), sometimes spelt Gizah, is the third largest city in Egypt. It is located on the west bank of the Nile River, some 20 km (12.43 mi) southwest of central Cairo. Along with Shubra El-Kheima, Cairo and Helwan, the four cities form the Province of Greater Cairo metropolis. The city of Giza is the capital of the Giza Governorate, and is located near the northeast border of this governorate in coordinates. It is located right on the banks of the River Nile. The city's population was 2,681,863 in the 2006 national census, while the governorate had 6,272,571 at the same census. Its large population makes it the second largest suburb in the world, tied with Incheon, South Korea and Quezon City, Philippines, second only to Yokohama, Japan.
Giza is most famous as the location of the Giza Plateau: the site of some of the most impressive ancient monuments in the world, including a complex of ancient Egyptian royal mortuary and sacred structures, including the Great Sphinx, the Great Pyramid of Giza, and a number of other large pyramids and temples. The plateau and its monuments have been recorded in the Giza Plateau Mapping Project run by Ancient Egypt Research Associates, directed by Dr. Mark Lehner. AERA's 2009 field season was recorded in a blog.

The Pyramids are the oldest of the "Seven Wonders of the World" and a must see place for any traveler. Constructed over a 20 year period around 2560 BC, the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure for over 3,800 years. One thing that upset me was they have built a golf course on the north side of this historic area (anywhere but here).

My travel buddy and I first ventured to Sharm El Sheikh for some relaxation so I didn't really vlog there, however I did vlog my adventures in Cairo! -In Cairo, if you want to have an enjoyable experience touring all of the great sites, I recommend hiring a private tour guide or egyptologist. My friend suggested Rasha El Ashmawy who is an Egyptologist & private tour guide. Her website is www.egyptdailytours.com and her prices are very reasonable! In an air conditioned car from 8am-5pmish she only charged us $90 per person and this includes entrance fees to every place she took us. We went to the Great Pyramids of Giza, The Sphinx, The Egyptian Museum (Unfortunately no photos or videos allowed), Cairo Citadel, Mosque of Muhammad Ali and Khan al Khalili Bazaar. Great price if you ask me! And we were chauffeured in a private van with A/C! Rasha was absolutely fabulous, very knowledgable and very sweet. I definitely recommend her! You will not be disappointed! She also offers airport transfer!
-Egyptian tourism is WAY down, down 90% since the Egyptian Revolution. Try to be generous when you can but sometimes it can get rather annoying. For example, at the Pyramids, buyers will try everything they can to get you to buy a souvenir. It's a bit annoying but with tourism so down, this is their way of living and they CAN get a bit aggressive. Best thing to do is just to ignore and keep walking. Don't even say "No Thank You". Just simply ignore.
-Don't take pictures of military personnel, I accidentally got in trouble because an officer thought I was taking a video of his police car when in reality I was taking video of the building behind it. But wharves understandable.
-Don't ride a camel in front of the pyramids. You will get ripped of tremendously. Instead, take a $5 camel ride further away from the pyramids on the plateau. You still get great views of the pyramids!
-Buy souvenirs at Khan el Khalili but ALWAYS bargain and try to bring the price down. Most speak several languages so try your best to bring down the price!
-If you want to go inside Mosque of Muhammad Ali you can, however if you're not dressed appropriately you will be given an abaya for a small fee of about $1.
-Stay hydrated! It is HOT! Luckily there are beverage vendors everywhere so keep cash in hand.
-Cairo is NOISY! I've never heard so much noise in my life. Be prepared for the honking and the crazy driving! We stayed at the Conrad Cairo (Beautiful hotel that I definitely recommend!) and although we were at the 19th floor with a Nile view, we could STILL hear the honking so bring earplugs if you're easily annoyed!
-Egyptian food is AMAZING! Be sure to check out Abou Tarek for some authentic egyptian Koshary OR head on over to my favorite restaurant located in Zamalek, Abou El Sid. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS and craving it at this second!

The original ancient city was actually Memphis, now 24km (15 miles) southwest of Cairo, founded in 2,000 BC and ruled by King Menes who united Upper and Lower Egypt. There embarked a period of huge construction of some of the city's most prominent landmarks. The Fatimids established the Al-Azhar mosque (one of the world's oldest Islamic universities) located in Islamic Cairo, the medieval quarter also home to the sprawling market streets of Khan el-Khalili.
Once the Mamaluk Sultanate was captured by the Ottoman Empire, they shifted most of the trading back to Constantinople and Cairo became little more than a provincial town. The mkedieval curse, the Black Death, struck the city countless times reducing the population by hundreds of thousands. Cairo's place on the spice route was all but diminished.
The Ottomans were soon unseated by Napoleonic troops who occupied Cairo in the late 18th century, later falling to British troops.
Muhammad Ali Pasha was considered to be the founder of modern Egypt, with social and economic reforms and huge construction in the early 19th century. His grandson Ismail Pasha continued that modernization process, inspired by the broad boulevards of Paris, and his legacy can still be seen around today's Downtown Cairo.
Debt let to British occupation lasting well into the 20th century, but huge demonstrations led to Egypt's independence declared in 1922 and Sultan Ahmad Fuad became King Fuad I. His son King Farouk I later married Queen Farida Zulficar.
Since World War II, Cairo's development has been intense, its huge and fast-growing population leading to its current status as the largest city in Africa and the Muslim world.

Pyramids of Giza

The oldest, the Great Pyramid of Cheops, was completed in around 2560BC, and is Egypt's largest at 136m (448t) high. Nearby are three smaller pyramids built for the queens, and beyond are the pyramids of Chephren, son of Cheops, and Mycerinus. The Sphinx guards the entire site, which is thought to be some 2,600 years older than the pyramids themselves. Much more recently unearthed, the Solar Boat Museum houses a superbly preserved wooden boat found near the Great Pyramid. Hugely popular, daily sound and light shows in different languages take place after sunset

Bab Zuwayla

The southern gate of Bab Zuwayla is all that remains of the Fatimid city of el-Qahira. Executions took place here in Mamluk times but in the 19th century it acquired a happier reputation when a local saint, Mitwalli, performed miracles near the gate. To this day, people seeking healing nail a lock of hair or piece of clothing to the gate in hopes of receiving divine aid. Rising above the gate are the minarets of the Mosque of el-Muayyad, which offer some of the finest panoramic views in Cairo from the top. This charming, traffic-free street is a highlight of Islamic Cairo, especially at night when the monuments are spot-lit. In medieval times, Bayn al-Qasryn was Cairo's main public square; today it is lined with three Mamluk palace complexes.
The finest, the Madrassa (theological school) and Mausoleum of Qalaun, is also the earliest, were completed in 1279. The mausoleum is stunningly decorated with an elaborate stucco arch bearing stars and floral motifs, ornate coffered ceilings and stained glass. The 14th century Mausoleum of an-Nasir Mohammed and the Madrassa and Khanqah (monastery) of Sultan Barquq also boast fine architecture and decoration. You will doubtless be offered the chance to visit the minaret for fabulous views; donation appreciated.

Bayt el-Kritliya (Gayer-Anderson House)

The Gayer-Anderson House was the home of an English doctor to the royal family, who lived here from 1935-42. He restored two 16th-century houses, joined them together and filled them with exquisite decoration, furniture and oriental objects. The mashrabiyya-screened women's gallery overlooks the magnificent reception room with its central fountain, arguably the finest in Cairo. On a different note, scenes from James Bond's The Spy who Loved Me were filmed here.

City of the Dead

It might seem squeamish to visit the City of the Dead, but it's a fascinating sight. Dozens of 'tomb squatters' have made it their home and other Cairenes come to visit and picnic at the graves of their relatives, an ancient tradition.
This huge necropolis is divided into the northern and southern cemetery on either side of the Citadel and contains some outstanding Islamic architecture. The finest monuments are in the northern cemetery. The Mosque of Qaitbey, a Mamluk ruler, has an intricately carved dome, the finest in the Muslim world, while the splendidly decorated interior surrounds a peaceful courtyard. Visitors are advised to stick to the main streets in daylight hours, and not to visit alone.

Cairo has been ruled by Persians, Pharaohs, Romans, Arabian caliphs, British colonials and more, and nurtured the establishment of the Jewish, Christian and Islamic religions. Not surprisingly, for today's visitor, the beauty is seeing those centuries unfold in layers, often juxtaposed into modern-day living.
The original ancient city was actually Memphis, now 24km (15 miles) southwest of Cairo, founded in 2,000 BC and ruled by King Menes who united Upper and Lower Egypt. Fustat, as 'modern-day' Cairo was known, was founded some 3,000 years later and was one of the world's greatest, and largest cities and home to Egypt's first mosque.
There embarked a period of huge construction of some of the city's most prominent landmarks. The Fatimids established the Al-Azhar mosque (one of the world's oldest Islamic universities) located in Islamic Cairo, the medieval quarter also home to the sprawling market streets of Khan el-Khalili.
Once the Mamaluk Sultanate was captured by the Ottoman Empire, they shifted most of the trading back to Constantinople and Cairo became little more than a provincial town. The mkedieval curse, the Black Death, struck the city countless times reducing the population by hundreds of thousands. Cairo's place on the spice route was all but diminished.
The Ottomans were soon unseated by Napoleonic troops who occupied Cairo in the late 18th century, later falling to British troops.
Muhammad Ali Pasha was considered to be the founder of modern Egypt, with social and economic reforms and huge construction in the early 19th century. His grandson Ismail Pasha continued that modernization process, inspired by the broad boulevards of Paris, and his legacy can still be seen around today's Downtown Cairo.
Debt let to British occupation lasting well into the 20th century, but huge demonstrations led to Egypt's independence declared in 1922 and Sultan Ahmad Fuad became King Fuad I. His son King Farouk I later married Queen Farida Zulficar.
Since World War II, Cairo's development has been intense, its huge and fast-growing population leading to its current status as the largest city in Africa and the Muslim world.

During the month, many eateries will close during daylight hours, and some bars close for the entire month, but the city is festooned in decorative lights with traditional music at nights in Islamic Cairo. During the major festivals of Eid ul fitr and Eid ul Adha, many locals travel so flights, trains and buses could well be booked up in advance.
