Raga Puriya Kalyan is a melody that is traditionally played at the dusk (known as "sandhi-prakash"). It is a combination of two Ragas - Puriya and Yaman. Its mood is somber, meditative, contemplative, devotional and like many Ragas played at dusk, it makes one contemplate about life.

A raga (Sanskrit rāga राग, Tamil rāgam ராகம், Kannada "Raaga" ರಾಗ, Malayalam rāgam രാഗം literally "colour, hue" but also "beauty, melody"; also spelled raag, raaga, ragam) is one of the melodic modes used in Indian classical music.
A raga uses a series of five or more musical notes upon which a melody is constructed. However, it is important to remember that the way the notes are approached and rendered in musical phrases and the mood they convey are more important in defining a raga than the notes themselves. In the Indian musical tradition, rāgas are associated with different times of the day, or with seasons. Indian classical music is always set in a rāga. Non-classical music such as popular Indian film songs and ghazals sometimes use rāgas in their compositions.
Joep Bor of the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music defined Raga as "tonal framework for composition and improvisation."Nazir Jairazbhoy, chairman of UCLA's department of ethnomusicology, characterized ragas as separated by scale, line of ascent and descent, transilience, emphasized notes and register, and intonation and ornaments.

This Album of Hindustani Classical Music features one of the most legendary and popular Hindustani Classical musician, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is undoubtedly one of the greatest Sarod Players still practicing. He is responsible for popularizing Sarod as a musical instrument worldwide.
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan hails from the famous Senia Bangesh gharana or school of music. Amjad Ali learnt his art form from his father the legendary Haafiz Ali Khan who was initiated in the tradition of Senia Bangesh Gharana by Ustad Pyar Khan and Ustad Jafar Khan,direct descendants of the line of Tansen. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan's family is closely related to the history of Sarod and are said to be the inventors of this instrument.
Sarod is said to have descended from the Afghani Instrument Rabab. Sarod as we see it today owes a lot to the Senia Bangesh Gharana for its modifications. The beauty of this classical instrument lies in it's tonal clarity and the swooping slides between the melody notes. This style of playing allows the sarod player to copy a human voice. This technique is possible because of the primary modification of the Sarod from the Afghan Rabab which is replacing the wooden fingerboard with a long metal fingerboard. Thus allowing the Sarod player to slide almost seven notes or more. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is notably one of the masters of this technique. He is also known for his blazing fast staccato passages. In this album Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has presented raga Desh. Desh Raga is of Audav-Sampurna nature, i.e, in its arohana (ascent) only five notes are used where as in the avarohana (descent) all the seven notes are used. This is a very popular raga which is commonly sung at the second quarter of the night. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has delivered a very soulful rendition of the raga following the structure of Hindustani Classical music format. Manasi opened her concert with Thodi raga varnam traversing through two speeds, displaying her vocal verve and range. She then sang Sasivadana of Thyagaraja in the raga Chandrajyothi ... Reethigowla was the first raga Manasi dealt with in detail for the rarely heard composition Bhagavatothamulu Goodi. The raga delineation was good effort but the creativity part looked limited....
