He tells Jennifer Davies, from Swiss Re CGD, that he is optimistic that the sharing economy can work in the long run.
JD: Does the sharing economy really mean more work for more people, or does it erode traditionally secure industries leaving only low-paid part-time work?
Arun Sundararajan: I think that there are two very common narratives associated with the sharing economy. One is the empowered entrepreneurs who take control of their destinies. The other is the disenfranchised drones, a race to the bottom where everybody is chasing piece work. I think to some extent both of these narratives are going to play out. Fundamentally, the sharing economy is economic growth inducing – it increases the size of the pie.
I'm optimistic about the fact that the sharing economy is going to be equalizing, simply because, if I look at how the transition is occurring, it is resulting in a structure where a larger fraction of the population owns the means of production. Actually owning the assets, or the 'know-how' associated with providing short-term accommodation, providing transportation, providing healthcare services, providing other kinds of labour services.
So spreading the wealth across a larger fraction of the population, spreading the means of production and decentralizing it to people who used to simply be labour suppliers, I think, in the long run will lead to an increase equality and be democratizing in some ways access to a higher standard of living.
JD: How can we provide social safety nets for those workers in the sharing economy?
Arun Sundararajan: New models for creating a social safety net are one of the biggest challenges that governments will face over the coming decades. What we have to fundamentally do is rethink the funding for these safety nets. It's really important we preserve them because these are the signs of progress that we tend to be proud of. Yes, we like the fact that the economy grows, but we also like the fact that people work a certain number of hours a day that there are paid vacations, that there are workplace protections, that there are minimum wages, that there's overtime. All of these things are signs of progress of a society.
I think in many European countries, especially in the Scandinavian countries, we already have a fairly robust government-provided safety net. In the United States or the United Kingdom, on the other hand, the safety net is very heavily contingent on being a full-time employee. Those other countries where the rethinking has to happen far more rapidly and with a lot more creativity because it's unlikely that a government-provided safety net is going to appear anytime.

Arun is a local government district in West Sussex, England. It contains the towns of Arundel, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, and takes its name from the River Arun, which runs through the centre of the district.
Arun was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, merging the Urban Districts of Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, the municipal borough of Arundel and parts of Chichester and Worthing Rural Districts.
Arun District Council is a non-metropolitan district council formed of 56 councillors from across the following 26 wards:
The council has been under the control of the Conservative Party since its first election in 1973. The last elections to the council were held on 5 May 2011, the results of which are shown below:
The following 31 civil parishes are located within the district:
Arun District occupies the central southern area of West Sussex, and is bordered by Chichester District to the west, Horsham District to the north and Worthing borough and Adur District to the east. The district is bisected by the River Arun, and is divided between a broad rural area in the north of the district that contains Arundel and a host of small villages, part of which sits within the South Downs National Park, and an urban coastal strip that includes Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

Arun Sundararajan (Tamil: அருண் சுந்தர்ராஜன்) (born in the United Kingdom) is the NEC Faculty Fellow, Associate Professor of Information, Operations and Management Sciences and a Doctoral Coordinator at the Stern School of Business, New York University. For 2010-12, he is the Distinguished Academic Fellow at the Center for IT and the Networked Economy, Indian School of Business. Dr. Sundararajan is an expert on the economics of digital goods and network effects. He also conducts research about network science and the socioeconomic transformation of India.
Arun Sundararajan graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1993 with a B.Tech in electrical engineering. He subsequently attended the University of Rochester where he received an M. Phil in operations research and a Ph.D. in business administration. After he earned his doctorate, he joined the faculty at New York University, where his work focuses on the transformation of business and society by information technologies, and the Indian economy.

JD: Does the sharing economy really mean more work for more people, or does it erode traditionally secure industries leaving only low-paid part-time work?
Arun Sundararajan: I think that there are two very common narratives associated with the sharing economy. One is the empowered entrepreneurs who take control of their destinies. The other is the disenfranchised drones, a race to the bottom where everybody is chasing piece work. I think to some extent both of these narratives are going to play out. Fundamentally, the sharing economy is economic growth inducing – it increases the size of the pie.
I'm optimistic about the fact that the sharing economy is going to be equalizing, simply because, if I look at how the transition is occurring, it is resulting in a structure where a larger fraction of the population owns the means of production. Actually owning the assets, or the 'know-how' associated with providing short-term accommodation, providing transportation, providing healthcare services, providing other kinds of labour services.
So spreading the wealth across a larger fraction of the population, spreading the means of production and decentralizing it to people who used to simply be labour suppliers, I think, in the long run will lead to an increase equality and be democratizing in some ways access to a higher standard of living.
JD: How can we provide social safety nets for those workers in the sharing economy?
Arun Sundararajan: New models for creating a social safety net are one of the biggest challenges that governments will face over the coming decades. What we have to fundamentally do is rethink the funding for these safety nets. It's really important we preserve them because these are the signs of progress that we tend to be proud of. Yes, we like the fact that the economy grows, but we also like the fact that people work a certain number of hours a day that there are paid vacations, that there are workplace protections, that there are minimum wages, that there's overtime. All of these things are signs of progress of a society.
I think in many European countries, especially in the Scandinavian countries, we already have a fairly robust government-provided safety net. In the United States or the United Kingdom, on the other hand, the safety net is very heavily contingent on being a full-time employee. Those other countries where the rethinking has to happen far more rapidly and with a lot more creativity because it's unlikely that a government-provided safety net is going to appear anytime.

Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn is situated on the west (Thonburi) bank of the Chao Phraya River. It's super easy to get to from downtown Bangkok via taxi, bus or moto taxi which I took. If you climb the stairs of the central prang, you’ll be able to see that it’s decorated with mosaics made of broken Chinese porcelain.
You’ll also get an amazing view of the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, the river, and downtown Bangkok.
Just be careful–the stairs are very steep and narrow, so it’ll be a difficult climb.
Also remember that when you visit any wat, you have to follow the dress code–no exposed shoulders, pants and skirts should cover at least the knees, and shoes must be taken off before entering the temple.

During our time backpacking and traveling around Asia we spent more time in Thailand than any other country in SE Asia and for good reason. Unlike most tourists who visit Thailand, we decided to skip most of the beaches located in the southern regions of the country and instead focus most of our time in Northern Thailand. Chiang Mai, our home away from home, became our base for several months and by the time we left we promised ourselves we'd return again in the near future. What makes Chiang Mai such a great base for foreigners? Firstly, it's cheap. You can find high quality serviced apartments for under $500 (some are less than $300) that offer modern amenities and are in located in close proximity to the old square of the city. Secondly, the food – both Thai and International – offers as much diverse selection as any city I've ever visited. If you want to gormandize on authentic Thai delights you'll have no shortage of options ranging from Thai street food to high class Thai restaurants. For the culture vulture, no shortage of opportunities exist to explore temples such as Doi Suthep, markets such as the Saturday night market or interact with animals such as at the Elephant Nature Park. When you get tired of Chiang Mai, the sleepy hillside town of Pai awaits where the pace is slower and you feel more like you're out in the countryside. Whether you love it or hate it, most journeys in Thailand begin and end in Bangkok. This steamy chaotic city offers some incredible temples to explore (such as Wat Arun and the Temple of the Mount) along with great shopping and nightlife. From the robust culture, exotic islands, sensational street food, electrifying nightlife and the genuine beautiful smiles on the local's faces; I fell head over heels in love. And if none of that intrigues you, how about traveling luxuriously on a budget? Now, I'm from Ethiopia and I thought I got a lot for my dollar there but, Thailand may have Ethiopia beat.
Bangkok was my first stop on my tour of Thailand. I like to think of Bangkok as the New York city of Thailand; fast paced and high energy. One of the things I loved most about Bangkok is that, it not only offers modern elements westerners seek when traveling but also, a lot of culture and history.

An extremely large statue of a reclining Buddha is a big draw), Floating Market (truly a unique experience where many vendors prepare food right on their tiny boats. Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn is situated on the west (Thonburi) bank of the Chao Phraya River. It's super easy to get to from downtown Bangkok via taxi, bus or moto taxi which I took. You shouldn't have to pay much more than THB150 via moto taxi and a touch more via taxi.
This place is really picturesque so make sure you pack your camera. The temple was under restoration when I was there but still worth visiting. I recommend visiting in the afternoon then you can head back over the river via boat and have a drink and watch the sun set over the temple. Its magical! -Dan

Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn is situated on the west (Thonburi) bank of the Chao Phraya River. It's super easy to get to from downtown Bangkok via taxi, bus or moto taxi which I took. You shouldn't have to pay much more than THB150 via moto taxi and a touch more via taxi.
This place is really picturesque so make sure you pack your camera. The temple was under restoration when I was there but still worth visiting. I recommend visiting in the afternoon then you can head back over the river via boat and have a drink and watch the sun set over the temple. Its magical! -Dan
