In just my third trip on the kayak for the season I land a great looking Allegheny River flathead catfish. Here is a video that shows the catch along with my strategy, equipment and bait.

fishing allegheny river near TIDIOUTE Pennsylvania
Allegheny river, TIDIOUTE, pa.
Ed and I launched at Tidioute Sunday,
made it all the way to Rt62 bridge (~15 miles) no trouble with river. (~11:00
AMstart).
We caught ~5 suckers and 12 riffle minnows at Bonnie Brae w size 20
hooks and night crawler chunks to use as bait.
Fished that pool for ½ hour with
no success. Went to next pool for ½ hour, no success. Moved up past Indian
waters…
Nate caught 1 ~ 12” smallmouth (and missed one) at the Stone house (~6
miles up from Tidioute launch). Then we went for a ride all the way to the Rt
62 bridge. We anchored near bridge, went ½ mile past bridge and drifted down ~1
mile past bridge, no luck. Anywhere from 9’ to 1.5’ depth…Most drifts closer to
launch side.
Monday, we launched at Buckaloons launch ($5fee) (to save on
boat gas/travel time) and to give it a try. Getting boat off the trailer was
easy,
getting it back on with current was very tricky.
Sunday we had no
luck…we caught more bait fish bellow the bridge in the shallows. This time they
were mostly baby perch!!

The Erie Outing Club did a Kayaking/Camping Weekend near Warren, Pennsylvania.
We camp out at the Buckaloons, and Kayaked on the Allegheny River. This video was taken on Sunday. This video is from when we Kayak from a put-in near Kinzua Dam to Betts Park. I had to be careful to avoid the water battles during that when on during the float to protect my camera.

The Allegheny River (
/ælɨˈɡeɪni/) is a principal tributary of the Ohio River; it is located in the Eastern United States. The Allegheny River joins with the Monongahela River to form the Ohio River at the "Point" of Point State Park in Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Allegheny River is, by volume, the main headstream of the Ohio River.
The river is approximately 325 miles (523 km) long, running through the U.S. states of New York and Pennsylvania. It drains a rural dissected plateau of 11,580 square miles (30,000 km2) in the northern Allegheny Plateau, providing the northeastern most drainage in the watershed of the Mississippi River. Its tributaries reach to within 8 miles (13 km) of Lake Erie in southwestern New York.
The Allegheny Valley has been one of the most productive areas of fossil fuel extraction in U.S. history, with its extensive deposits of coal, petroleum, and natural gas.
The name Allegheny probably comes from Lenape welhik hane or oolikhanna, which means 'best flowing river of the hills' or 'beautiful stream'. There is a Lenape legend of a tribe called "Allegewi" who used to live along the river.

We camp out at the Buckaloons, and Kayaked on the Allegheny River. This video was taken on Sunday. This video is from when we Kayak from a put-in near Kinzua Dam to Betts Park. I had to be careful to avoid the water battles during that when on during the float to protect my camera.

About the report: "This report compiles the results as of December 2011 for the ongoing project of documenting forests and trees of the islands of the Allegheny River Island Wilderness and nearby islands in the middle Allegheny River in north central Pennsylvania. The islands included in this report are located in a stretch extending from the Buckaloons Recreation Area, seven miles downstream of Warren, Pennsylvania through Holeman Island, four miles downstream of Tionesta, Pennsylvania. This includes all of the islands in the Allegheny River Islands Wilderness, a number of forest service islands, and several private islands. Major islands investigated among others include, Crull's Island, Thompson's Island, Courson Island, Hemlock Island, King Island, Baker Island, and Holeman Island. At the present time some of the islands have been visited multiple times by groups of people, while others have seen only a quick scouting survey, or have not yet been visited."
