Former Yugoslav strongman Slobodan Milosevic on Tuesday insisted his conscience was clear - despite a war crimes indictment and widespread blame for the ruin of his country.
In his first interview since his ouster from power in October, the former president said he could sleep peacefully.
During the two-hour interview, the confident-looking Milosevic also said he did not recognise the U-N tribunal in
The Hague, Netherlands, which indicted him last year for war crimes in Kosovo.
In the interview with the private Palma television station - his first since his October 5 ouster - Slobodan Milosevic defended his record as leader.
The former strongman appeared relaxed and confident during the two-hour interview, which is due to be broadcast on Tuesday evening.

"Had I not done what I did during the past 10 years, they (the current government) would not be able to attack me, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on (EXACT TRANSLATION 'an armchair to sit in' ). They deliver a barrage of accusations from the whole decade of great pressures, sufferings, during which we needed to to fight for our nation. We did everything we could possibly do."

Milosevic said that the war crimes tribunal, which indicted him last year for alleged war crimes in Kosovo, was a political institution "which represented a mechanism of genocide against the Serbian people."

Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica has refused to hand his predecessor over to the international war crimes, but government officials recently suggested that Milosevic could be tried in Yugoslavia.
Many in Belgrade want him to face charges for alleged offences committed during 13 years of misrule and four Balkan wars he is accused of triggering.

Yugoslavia's judiciary has so far not filed any charges against him despite widespread allegations of corruption,
money-laundering, economic mismanagement, repression and suppression of independent media.

"As far as the corruption is concerned, there were some abuses, that's for sure. If we talk about the criminal and the rise of criminal, that was the immediate consequence of the war conditions and sanctions and the consequence of everything that had happened to us. I must tell you that the Socialist Party of Serbia in all party programmes emphasised the battle against crime, and we had good results in that battle, although we did not always go public with our results."

Milosevic was ousted by a popular revolt after he refused to accept an overwhelming defeat by Kostunica in the September 24 presidential elections.
He however retained the control over his once mighty Socialist Party and he is preparing a political comeback in the December 23 parliamentary elections in Serbia, the dominant Yugoslav republic.

This was the first time a defendant chose to defend himself. It was the first time the defendant changed focus from himself to the wrongdoings of the international community. And it was the first time in modern history that a president of a sovereign country was put before an international tribunal. This is a video that shows the first minutes of a historical trial that served as a pilot case in many different ways. Some people even say this trial marked the beginning of the end of the uni-polar moment in history that followed the fall of the Berlin wall.

Yugoslavia's President Slobodan Milosevic is being held directly responsible by NATO member states for the wave of human suffering
which has denuded Kosovo of hundreds of thousands of ethnic Albanians
and displaced the majority of those who have remained.
This is the first time during the Kosovo conflict the Serbian strongman has been interviewed at such length. His public statements during the NATO bombing campaign have been few.
This interview was conducted in Belgrade,Yugoslavia, on April 19. The interviewer is an American academic - Ron Hatchett, from the Centre for International Studies at Houston's University of Saint Thomas. Hatchett arranged the trip to interview the Yugoslav leader with the help of
US -Serbian organisations.
In the interview Milosevic gives his reaction to NATO's prolonged bombing campaign and talks about the allegations that Yugoslav forces and Serbian police are "ethnically cleansing" Kosovo.
He says ethnic Albanians are not being forcibly expelled and that the refugee crisis is a direct result of NATO's bombing. There were no refugees, he alleges, until the allied air campaign began on March 24th.
Milosevic also discusses the fate of the U-S POWs, saying that they are in good health and that the Geneva Convention will be respected.
Looking back at the Rambouillet Talks, whose failure prompted a renewed and intensified Serb onslaught in Kosovo and NATO air strikes in its wake, Milosevic was dismissive.
There were no negotiations, he says.
He says the ethnic Albanian and Serb delegations never held talks and that his emissaries only met Americans.

"There were no negotiations at all and your audience has to know that. In all those 3 longs weeks, two in Rambouillet and one in Paris, there were not one single meeting between the delegations to talk to each other. Albanians and Serbs and others in state delegation couldn't exchange one single word. Practically what was tried to be imposed in Rambouillet was not autonomy at all. That was independence. And I really don't believe, if you show it to any honest American, that there is one honest American who will tell you that if they were in the place of our delegation, they would sign it. We are talking on autonomy, on equality, on equal approach to interest of all national communities, not on independence of Albanian separation movement, which had by that so-called agreement practically the right to organise a new state within Serbia.

STORYLINE:
Slobodan Milosevic will appeal to the international community when he goes on trial for alleged war crimes before the U-N War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague on Tuesday, Milosevic's brother says.
Speaking in Moscow on Monday, Borislav Milosevic, former Yugoslav ambassador to Russia, said his brother would also protest against the court, which he doesn't recognise as legitimate.
Borislav Milosevic said the court was "concocted" with the purpose of convicting his brother.
He said certain world leaders were seeking his conviction to justify their bombing of Yugoslavia during the Kosovo crisis in 1999.
Defending his brother's actions in Kosovo, Borislav Milosevic said the Serb forces were fighting groups which were linked to international terrorism, including Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network.
He claimed bin Laden visited Kosovo in 1998.
Meanwhile, in Moscow, several dozen of Milosevic supporters staged a protest outside the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The demonstrators denounced the War Crimes Tribunal and the Russian government for their lack of support for the former Yugoslav leader.

"When you negotiated with Milosevic, and I spent more time with him than any other American or European, you saw a very ugly but complicated picture. He was a war criminal. He had started four wars and lost them all. At the same time you had to negotiate with him to end the war, the current war, which we did. He was quite clever and smart and in fact he was smart enough that many people found him charming. Former ambassador to Yugoslavia, Laurence Egelberg, later our Secretary of State, famously called him a 'Yugoslav Gorbachev'. Well he wasn't. Gorbachev didn't use force to keep the Soviet Union together. He allowed the Soviet Union to peacefully break up, whereas Milosevic used force to try and keep Yugoslavia together. The fact was that Milosevic was clever and dangerous and ruthless and many people thought he was a sociopath. That he just didn't care about things. Both his parents committed suicide, and he didn't seem to have any human concern for people as individuals. It was all abstract. And one last point, for Milosevic everything was about holding on to power day-to-day. He was a communist who turned pseudo nationalist, but the nationalism was a fake. What it really was, was about power."

The man who brokered a ceasefire towards the end of the Balkan wars, said on Saturday, that former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic had been one of the worst leaders Europe had ever seen.
Milosevic, who orchestrated the Balkan wars of the 1990s and was on trial for war crimes, was found dead in his prison cell at the United Nations (UN) detention centre near The Hague.

Serbia-Montenegro''s Foreign Minister said on Tuesday that Slobodan Milosevic "deserves hell" for the suffering his regime inflicted during more than a dozen years of heavy-handed rule.
But Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic called on Europe and the United States to ease their pressure on Serbia-Montenegro to arrest and hand over top war crimes fugitive General Ratko Mladic for trial by the UN.
Draskovic, a former opposition leader who himself survived two assassination attempts orchestrated by the late Serbian president in 1999 and
2000, said in an interview with The Associated Press that he was embarrassed to see Milosevic remembered as a patriot in much of Serbia.
"The majority of public reaction in Serbia after the death of Slobodan Milosevic makes me ashamed," he said, denouncing what he called "public glorification of a man responsible for many atrocities and murders of his political opponents."
Among the more prominent Milosevic foes who were eliminated was Ivan Stambolic, Milosevic''s long-time friend and patron, who became a political rival.
Just a few months before Milosevic was ousted from power in 2000, Stambolic was abducted and vanished. His remains were discovered three years later in a lime-covered pit outside the capital.
Draskovic said mainstream Serbian media were to blame for portraying Milosevic as a statesman and national hero.
The Foreign Minister expressed remorse that Milosevic would "approach the grave without a verdict for atrocities he committed, atrocities for which he is responsible."
Milosevic was on trial before the UN War crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands, when he died on Saturday.
Draskovic said the West''s insistence on tying talks on eventual EU and NATO membership to the capture of General Ratko Mladic''s was playing into the hands of ultra-nationalists, and could lead to the isolation of Serbia.

Slobodan Milošević (sometimes transliterated as Miloshevich[citation needed]; Serbian pronunciation: [slɔbɔ̌dan milɔ̌ːʃɛʋitɕ] (
listen); Serbian Cyrillic: Слободан Милошевић; 20 August 1941 – 11 March 2006) was the President of Serbia and Yugoslavia. He served as the President of the Socialist Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Serbia from 1989 until 1997 in three terms and as President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1997 to 2000. He also led the Socialist Party of Serbia from its foundation in 1990. His presidency was marked by the breakup of Yugoslavia and the subsequent Yugoslav Wars. In the midst of the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, Milošević was charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with the wars in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
Milošević resigned the Yugoslav presidency amid demonstrations, following the disputed presidential election of 24 September 2000. He was arrested by Yugoslav federal authorities on Saturday, 31 March 2001, on suspicion of corruption, abuse of power, and embezzlement. The initial investigation into Milošević faltered for lack of evidence, prompting the Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić to send him to The Hague to stand trial for charges of war crimes instead. Milošević conducted his own defense in the five-year long trial, which ended without a verdict when he died on 11 March 2006 in his prison cell in The Hague. Milošević, who suffered from heart ailments and high blood pressure, died of a heart attack. The Tribunal denies any responsibility for Milošević's death. They claim that he refused to take prescribed medicines and medicated himself instead.

English/Nat Yugoslavia's President Slobodan Milosevic is being held directly responsible by NATO member states for the wave of human suffering which has denuded Kosovo of hundreds of thousands of ethnic Albanians and displaced the majority of those who have remained. This is the first time during the Kosovo conflict the Serbian strongman has been interviewed at such length. His public statements during the NATO bombing campaign have been few. This interview was conducted in Belgrade,Yugoslavia, on April 19. The interviewer is an American academic - Ron Hatchett, from the Centre for International Studies at Houston's University of Saint Thomas. Hatchett arranged the trip to interview the Yugoslav leader with the help of US -Serbian organisations. In the interview Milosevic gives his reaction to NATO's prolonged bombing campaign and talks about the allegations that Yugoslav forces and Serbian police are "ethnically cleansing" Kosovo. He says ethnic Albanians are not being forcibly expelled and that the refugee crisis is a direct result of NATO's bombing. There were no refugees, he alleges, until the allied air campaign began on March 24th. Milosevic also discusses the fate of the U-S POWs, saying that they are in good health and that the Geneva Convention will be respected. Looking back at the Rambouillet Talks, whose failure prompted a renewed and intensified Serb onslaught in Kosovo and NATO air strikes in its wake, Milosevic was dismissive. There were no negotiations, he says. He says the ethnic Albanian and Serb delegations never held talks and that his emissaries only met Americans. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There were no negotiations at all and your audience has to know that. In all those 3 longs weeks, two in Rambouillet and one in Paris, there were not one single meeting between the delegations to talk to each other. Albanians and Serbs and others in state delegation couldn't exchange one single word. Practically what was tried to be imposed in Rambouillet was not autonomy at all. That was independence. And I really don't believe, if you show it to any honest American, that there is one honest American who will tell you that if they were in the place of our delegation, they would sign it. We are talking on autonomy, on equality, on equal approach to interest of all national communities, not on independence of Albanian separation movement, which had by that so-called agreement practically the right to organise a new state within Serbia. Various of protest STORYLINE: Slobodan Milosevic will appeal to the international community when he goes on trial for alleged war crimes before the U-N War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague on Tuesday, Milosevic's brother says. Speaking in Moscow on Monday, Borislav Milosevic, former Yugoslav ambassador to Russia, said his brother would also protest against the court, which he doesn't recognise as legitimate. Borislav Milosevic said the court was "concocted" with the purpose of convicting his brother. He said certain world leaders were seeking his conviction to justify their bombing of Yugoslavia during the Kosovo crisis in 1999. Defending his brother's actions in Kosovo, Borislav Milosevic said the Serb forces were fighting groups which were linked to international terrorism, including Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network. He claimed bin Laden visited Kosovo in 1998. Meanwhile, in Moscow, several dozen of Milosevic supporters staged a protest outside the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The demonstrators denounced the War Crimes Tribunal and the Russian government for their lack of support for the former Yugoslav leader. He was a war criminal. He had started four wars and lost them all. At the same time you had to negotiate with him to end the war, the current war, which we did. He was quite clever and smart and in fact he was smart enough that many people found him charming. Former ambassador to Yugoslavia, Laurence Egelberg, later our Secretary of State, famously called him a 'Yugoslav Gorbachev'. Well he wasn't. Gorbachev didn't use force to keep the Soviet Union together. He allowed the Soviet Union to peacefully break up, whereas Milosevic used force to try and keep Yugoslavia together. The fact was that Milosevic was clever and dangerous and ruthless and many people thought he was a sociopath. That he just didn't care about things. Both his parents committed suicide, and he didn't seem to have any human concern for people as individuals. It was all abstract. And one last point, for Milosevic everything was about holding on to power day-to-day. He was a communist who turned pseudo nationalist, but the nationalism was a fake. What it really was, was about power." 10. Wide shot convoy, someone at the distance gets out of the car STORYLINE: Serbian state television announced Friday night that Slobodan Milosevic had been arrested; however, his aides insisted that the former president was still in his villa. Independent B-92 radio also said Milosevic had been arrested and taken to the Palace of Justice. Private BK-TV reported that Milosevic was handed over to an investigative judge at the courthouse. But Sinisa Vucinic, a top aide to Milosevic, denied that he was under arrest. "I'm looking at him now. He is not arrested," he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. Earlier, BK TV, quoting Serbian government sources, had said an arrest warrant had been issued for the former Yugoslav president, but that police hesitated to act, fearing bloodshed. About 400 Milosevic supporters _ some wielding pistols, clubs and iron bars _ were standing in front of his villa gates, saying they were protecting the former president from possible arrest. BK TV had reported that police officials were inside the residence, negotiating his peaceful surrender. Earlier Friday evening, Milosevic's aide, Branislav Ivkovic, who is head of the Socialist Party faction in the Serbian parliament, announced that a "number of people in black uniforms and an ambulance car are heading toward Milosevic's house" in Belgrade's upscale Dedinje district. He had said Milosevic was likely to be arrested. Several police vehicles, some packed with plainclothes policemen toting machine guns, were parked near the entrances of Milosevic's villa. Numerous journalists gathered near the home. They were cursed and jeered by Milosevic's supporters. Two ambulances were parked nearby. Ivkovic later appeared in front of the villa, saying: "I just talked to Milosevic. He stressed his thanks to the people who have been gathering to protect him and called them real patriots." A police official who asked not to be named told The AP that Serbia's State Security attempted to replace Milosevic's bodyguards Friday, and that Milosevic reportedly refused to accept the change. The report could not be immediately confirmed. According to the same official, Gen. Senta Milenkovic and a group of bodyguards responsible for Milosevic's security agreed to be replaced while others refused and were reportedly fired. It was not clear how many bodyguards remained on duty. Serbian Justice Minister Vladan Batic tried to calm down tensions which were growing by the hour in Belgrade, calling the situation a simple "change of guard." Yugoslav authorities have long maintained that if Milosevic is to be tried for crimes committed during his years in power, it would be by a Yugoslav court. The UN.S. Congress set a Saturday deadline for Belgrade to begin cooperating with the U.N. war crimes tribunal at The Hague, Netherlands, which wants to try Milosevic for war crimes and crimes against humanity stemming from his harsh crackdown on ethnic Albanians in the Serbian province of Kosovo in 1999. Washington has said Belgrade would face suspension of dlrs 100 million in economic aid if it did not comply. Since his ouster from power last October, Milosevic has lived under police surveillance in his villa. They deliver a barrage of accusations from the whole decade of great pressures, sufferings, during which we needed to to fight for our nation. We did everything we could possibly do."

If we talk about the criminal and the rise of criminal, that was the immediate consequence of the war conditions and sanctions and the consequence of everything that had happened to us. And it was the first time in modern history that a president of a sovereign country was put before an international tribunal. Yugoslavia's President Slobodan Milosevic is being held directly responsible by NATO member states for the wave of human suffering
which has denuded Kosovo of hundreds of thousands of ethnic Albanians
and displaced the majority of those who have remained.
This is the first time during the Kosovo conflict the Serbian strongman has been interviewed at such length. His public statements during the NATO bombing campaign have been few.
This interview was conducted in Belgrade,Yugoslavia, on April 19. The interviewer is an American academic - Ron Hatchett, from the Centre for International Studies at Houston's University of Saint Thomas. Hatchett arranged the trip to interview the Yugoslav leader with the help of
US -Serbian organisations.
In the interview Milosevic gives his reaction to NATO's prolonged bombing campaign and talks about the allegations that Yugoslav forces and Serbian police are "ethnically cleansing" Kosovo.
He says ethnic Albanians are not being forcibly expelled and that the refugee crisis is a direct result of NATO's bombing. There were no refugees, he alleges, until the allied air campaign began on March 24th.
Milosevic also discusses the fate of the U-S POWs, saying that they are in good health and that the Geneva Convention will be respected.
Looking back at the Rambouillet Talks, whose failure prompted a renewed and intensified Serb onslaught in Kosovo and NATO air strikes in its wake, Milosevic was dismissive.
There were no negotiations, he says.
He says the ethnic Albanian and Serb delegations never held talks and that his emissaries only met Americans.

"There were no negotiations at all and your audience has to know that. In all those 3 longs weeks, two in Rambouillet and one in Paris, there were not one single meeting between the delegations to talk to each other. Albanians and Serbs and others in state delegation couldn't exchange one single word. Practically what was tried to be imposed in Rambouillet was not autonomy at all. That was independence. And I really don't believe, if you show it to any honest American, that there is one honest American who will tell you that if they were in the place of our delegation, they would sign it. We are talking on autonomy, on equality, on equal approach to interest of all national communities, not on independence of Albanian separation movement, which had by that so-called agreement practically the right to organise a new state within Serbia.

STORYLINE:
Slobodan Milosevic will appeal to the international community when he goes on trial for alleged war crimes before the U-N War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague on Tuesday, Milosevic's brother says.
Speaking in Moscow on Monday, Borislav Milosevic, former Yugoslav ambassador to Russia, said his brother would also protest against the court, which he doesn't recognise as legitimate.
Borislav Milosevic said the court was "concocted" with the purpose of convicting his brother.
He said certain world leaders were seeking his conviction to justify their bombing of Yugoslavia during the Kosovo crisis in 1999.
Defending his brother's actions in Kosovo, Borislav Milosevic said the Serb forces were fighting groups which were linked to international terrorism, including Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network.
He claimed bin Laden visited Kosovo in 1998.
Meanwhile, in Moscow, several dozen of Milosevic supporters staged a protest outside the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The demonstrators denounced the War Crimes Tribunal and the Russian government for their lack of support for the former Yugoslav leader.

"When you negotiated with Milosevic, and I spent more time with him than any other American or European, you saw a very ugly but complicated picture. He was a war criminal. He had started four wars and lost them all. At the same time you had to negotiate with him to end the war, the current war, which we did. He was quite clever and smart and in fact he was smart enough that many people found him charming. Former ambassador to Yugoslavia, Laurence Egelberg, later our Secretary of State, famously called him a 'Yugoslav Gorbachev'. Well he wasn't. Gorbachev didn't use force to keep the Soviet Union together. He allowed the Soviet Union to peacefully break up, whereas Milosevic used force to try and keep Yugoslavia together. The fact was that Milosevic was clever and dangerous and ruthless and many people thought he was a sociopath. That he just didn't care about things. Both his parents committed suicide, and he didn't seem to have any human concern for people as individuals. It was all abstract. And one last point, for Milosevic everything was about holding on to power day-to-day. He was a communist who turned pseudo nationalist, but the nationalism was a fake. What it really was, was about power."

The man who brokered a ceasefire towards the end of the Balkan wars, said on Saturday, that former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic had been one of the worst leaders Europe had ever seen.
Milosevic, who orchestrated the Balkan wars of the 1990s and was on trial for war crimes, was found dead in his prison cell at the United Nations (UN) detention centre near The Hague.

Serbia-Montenegro''s Foreign Minister said on Tuesday that Slobodan Milosevic "deserves hell" for the suffering his regime inflicted during more than a dozen years of heavy-handed rule.
But Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic called on Europe and the United States to ease their pressure on Serbia-Montenegro to arrest and hand over top war crimes fugitive General Ratko Mladic for trial by the UN.
Draskovic, a former opposition leader who himself survived two assassination attempts orchestrated by the late Serbian president in 1999 and
2000, said in an interview with The Associated Press that he was embarrassed to see Milosevic remembered as a patriot in much of Serbia.
"The majority of public reaction in Serbia after the death of Slobodan Milosevic makes me ashamed," he said, denouncing what he called "public glorification of a man responsible for many atrocities and murders of his political opponents."
Among the more prominent Milosevic foes who were eliminated was Ivan Stambolic, Milosevic''s long-time friend and patron, who became a political rival.
Just a few months before Milosevic was ousted from power in 2000, Stambolic was abducted and vanished. His remains were discovered three years later in a lime-covered pit outside the capital.
Draskovic said mainstream Serbian media were to blame for portraying Milosevic as a statesman and national hero.

Serbian state television announced Friday night that Slobodan Milosevic had been arrested; however, his aides insisted that the former president was still in his villa.
Independent B-92 radio also said Milosevic had been arrested and taken to the Palace of Justice.
Private BK-TV reported that Milosevic was handed over to an investigative judge at the courthouse. But Sinisa Vucinic, a top aide to Milosevic, denied that he was under arrest.
"I'm looking at him now. He is not arrested," he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
Earlier, BK TV, quoting Serbian government sources, had said an arrest warrant had been issued for the former Yugoslav president, but that police hesitated to act, fearing bloodshed.
About 400 Milosevic supporters _ some wielding pistols, clubs and iron bars _ were standing in front of his villa gates, saying they were protecting the former president from possible arrest.
BK TV had reported that police officials were inside the residence, negotiating his peaceful surrender.
Earlier Friday evening, Milosevic's aide, Branislav Ivkovic, who is head of the Socialist Party faction in the Serbian parliament, announced that a "number of people in black uniforms and an ambulance car are heading toward Milosevic's house" in Belgrade's upscale Dedinje district.
He had said Milosevic was likely to be arrested.
Several police vehicles, some packed with plainclothes policemen toting machine guns, were parked near the entrances of Milosevic's villa.
Numerous journalists gathered near the home. They were cursed and jeered by Milosevic's supporters. Two ambulances were parked nearby.
Ivkovic later appeared in front of the villa, saying: "I just talked to Milosevic. He stressed his thanks to the people who have been gathering to protect him and called them real patriots."
A police official who asked not to be named told The AP that Serbia's State Security attempted to replace Milosevic's bodyguards Friday, and that Milosevic reportedly refused to accept the change. The report could not be immediately confirmed.
According to the same official, Gen. Senta Milenkovic and a group of bodyguards responsible for Milosevic's security agreed to be replaced while others refused and were reportedly fired. It was not clear how many bodyguards remained on duty.
Serbian Justice Minister Vladan Batic tried to calm down tensions which were growing by the hour in Belgrade, calling the situation a simple "change of guard."
Yugoslav authorities have long maintained that if Milosevic is to be tried for crimes committed during his years in power, it would be by a Yugoslav court.
The UN.S. Congress set a Saturday deadline for Belgrade to begin cooperating with the U.N. war crimes tribunal at The Hague, Netherlands, which wants to try Milosevic for war crimes and crimes against humanity stemming from his harsh crackdown on ethnic Albanians in the Serbian province of Kosovo in 1999.
Washington has said Belgrade would face suspension of dlrs 100 million in economic aid if it did not comply.
Since his ouster from power last October, Milosevic has lived under police surveillance in his villa.

Richard Holbrooke met Milosevic last month at a meeting which aimed to bring peace to the troubled region of Kosovo.
In an exclusive interview with APTV in New York, Holbrooke said that NATO's presence in the region could make the difference between war and peace.
When Richard Holbrooke sat down to negotiate a peace plan for the Bosnian conflict in 1996, he may have had little idea of the impact of his work.
Two years later the peace treaty is still holding, but another conflict is heating up in the region.
This time Kosovo is under pressure from Yugoslav President Milosevic, who threatens the security of the province.
Holbrooke has recently published a book on his Bosnian experience in the hope that others may learn how the art of diplomacy works.
But - talking about the success of negotiations to gain peace in Bosnia - he warned of possible trouble ahead.

The Death of Yugoslavia is a BBC documentary series first broadcast in 1995, and is also the name of a book written by Allan Little and Laura Silber that accompanies the series. It covers the collapse of Yugoslavia and the subsequent wars that followed. It is notable in its combination of never-before-seen archive footage interspersed with interviews of most of the main players in the conflict, including Slobodan Milošević, Radovan Karadžić, Franjo Tuđman and Alija Izetbegović.
The series was awarded with a BAFTA award in 1996 for Best Factual Series.[1] Because of the series large amount of interviews with prominent leaders and commanders of the conflict, it has been frequently used by ICTY in war crimes prosecutions.[2]
All the papers relating to the documentary series, including full transcripts of the many valuable interviews conducted with participants, are lodged at the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives at King's College, University of London.[3]
During the trial of Slobodan Milošević before the ICTY, Judge Bonomy called the nature of much of the commentary "tendentious".[4] This was because there were instances in which an interview in the Serbian language was subtitled incorrectly and often in a misleading manner (for example, the subtitling translated an interviewee saying that "Milosevic always won the elections on a nationalistic platform and nothing else", rather than "... on a national platform...
