Curtis Lee Mayfield (June 3, 1942 – December 26, 1999) was an African-American soul, R&B, and funk singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known for his anthemic music with The Impressions during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and for composing the soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Super Fly, Mayfield is highly regarded as a pioneer of funk and of politically conscious African-American music. He was also a multi-instrumentalist who played the guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, and drums. Curtis Mayfield is a winner of both the Grammy Legend Award (in 1994) and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (in 1995), and was a double inductee into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted as a member of The Impressions into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, and again in 1999 as a solo artist. He is also a two-time Grammy Hall of Fame inductee.
Born on June 3, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, Mayfield was the son of Marion Washington and Kenneth Mayfield. Mayfield's father left the family when Mayfield was five and his mother moved Curtis and his siblings into various Chicago projects before settling at the Cabrini–Green projects when Mayfield reached his teenage years. Mayfield attended Wells Community Academy High School. He dropped out of high school early to become lead singer and songwriter for The Impressions, then went on to a successful solo career. Perhaps most notably, Mayfield was among the first of a new wave of mainstream African-American R&B performing artists and composers injecting social commentary into their work. This "message music" became extremely popular during the 1960s and 1970s.

Curtis Mayfield - If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go From Album - Curtis Curtis Lee Mayfield (June 3, 1942 -- December 26, 1999) was an American soul, R&B;, and funk singer, songwriter, and record producer best known for his anthemic music with The Impressions and for composing the soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Super Fly. For these works and others, he is highly regarded as a pioneer of funk and of politically conscious African-American music.He was also a multi-instrumentalist who played the guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, and drums. Curtis Lee Mayfield (June 3, 1942 -- December 26, 1999) was an American soul, R&B;, and funk singer, songwriter, and record producer best known for his anthemic music with The Impressions and for composing the soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Super Fly. For these works and others, he is highly regarded as a pioneer of funk and of politically conscious African-American music.He was also a multi-instrumentalist who played the guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, and drums. Curtis Mayfield is a winner of both the Grammy Legend Award (in 1994) and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (in 1995),and was a double inductee into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted as a member of The Impressions into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, and again in 1999 as a solo artist. He is also a 2 time Grammy Hall of Fame inductee.

At the time -- some seven years after his Live at Ronnie Scott's concert release -- Mayfield was in a particularly good place. He hadn't had any hits in a long time, but he had endured long enough to achieve the status of elder statesman in soul, and there was nothing wrong with a set that delved into the past that put him there. What's more, his band took a fresh approach, opening up with a Latin-flavored jazz instrumental that might not have gone over with his old audience, earlier in his career. He goes through his best-known songs but makes shifts in tempo and emphasis that set this show apart from the earlier Ronnie Scott's appearance -- "Freddie's Dead" lost none of its urgency and, in fact, has picked up some multi-layered percussive elements that, coupled with Mayfield's fervor, makes the song a bracing experience, even the thousandth time one might have heard it; and "Pusherman," for all of its other attributes, is also exquisite in the way it is treated. The video is extremely well-shot, with highly mobile camera work that gives us close-ups of everyone (including Mayfield on the lead guitar) at work, with superb editing to support it. The sound is loud and rich, and each song gets its own chapter marker. The disc opens automatically to a simple menu with the "play" option in the default position.

This is a tribute to the great Curtis Mayfield. Most are familiar with the music from the Superfly album and the great song "Choice of Colors". This is a tribute to the great Curtis Mayfield. Most are familiar with the music from the Superfly album and the great song "Choice of Colors". Equally impressive were two of my favorite, "Now You're Gone" and the funk jam, "(Don’t Worry) If There’s A Hell Below Were All Going to Go". Curtis was way ahead of his time and when you listen to his lyrics, it seems he's still alive speaking to us today.

It was hosted by Jools Holland and David Sanborn, and featured Marcus Miller as musical director. Guests included acts such as Sonny Rollins, Shinehead, Sister Carol, Sonic Youth, Joe Sample, Slim Gaillard, Pere Ubu, Pharoah Sanders, and many others. In addition, vintage clips of jazz legends like Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, and Billie Holiday were also featured. The show also featured a house band of Omar Hakim (drums), Marcus Miller (bass), Philippe Saisse (keys), David Sanborn (sax), Hiram Bullock (guitar), and Jools Holland (piano). The show often allowed its guests ample time to explain the origins of their sound, meaning of songs, etc. It also provided a national audience for lesser known acts (like Arto Lindsay's band The Ambitious Lovers).
