Vor dem Hintergrund der Bedrohung der nordsyrischen Stadt Kobane durch den Islamischen Staat (IS) schildert die Dokumentation an der sich wandelnden öffentlichen Wahrnehmung Abdullah Öcalans vom Terroristen zur "Stimme des Friedens" den Konflikt um die Eigenständigkeit der Kurden und mahnt eine Lösung der Kurdenfrage an, ohne welche die Region weiter destabilisiert würde.
Die Kämpfe kurdischer Truppen der Partei der demokratischen Union (PYD) und der Arbeiterpartei Kurdistans (PKK) gegen das Vordringen des Islamischen Staates (IS) rückten die nordsyrische Stadt Kobane in den Blick der Öffentlichkeit. Kobane wurde zum Symbol für die Zukunft der kurdischen Bevölkerung in der Türkei und in Syrien. Aus seiner Zelle auf der Insel Imrali warnte der seit 1999 dort inhaftierte PKK-Führer Abdullah Öcalan die Türkei: Sollte Kobane in die Hände des IS fallen, wäre der Friedensprozess beendet. Dieser Dialogversuch zwischen Öcalan und Ankara war der bisher weitgehendste.
Seit dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges kämpfen rund 40 Millionen Kurden in den Ländern Türkei, Syrien, Irak und Iran um Autonomie, um das Recht, ihre Sprache und Kultur zu pflegen. Damals hatte man den Kurden einen eigenen Staat versprochen. Diese Zusage wurde nie eingelöst, so sind die Kurden heute das größte Volk der Erde ohne eigenen Staat. Der Kampf um eine kulturelle Identität radikalisierte sich 1978, als die PKK gegründet wurde. Fünf Jahre später erklärte die Partei dem türkischen Staat den Krieg. In den folgenden 30 Jahren starben über 40.000 Menschen in diesem Konflikt. Und Abdullah Öcalan wurde zur Symbolfigur der kurdischen Guerilla.
Die Dokumentation schildert anhand der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung Öcalans diese Auseinandersetzung, vom Feind Nummer 1 der Türkei zur „Stimme des Friedens“, wie das US-Magazin TIME Öcalan bezeichnete. Die Türkei kann nicht mehr umhin, die Kurdenfrage zu regeln, ohne eine weitere Destabilisierung der gesamten Region zu riskieren.

Abdullah Öcalan (born 4 April 1948) is a founding member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The PKK, Under the influence of Turkey is listed as a terrorist organization internationally by a number of states and organizations, including the United States and the European Union.
Öcalan was captured in Nairobi and extradited to the Turkish security force, and sentenced to death under Article 125 of the Turkish Penal Code, which concerns the formation of armed gangs. The sentence was commuted to aggravated life imprisonment when Turkey abolished the death penalty in support of its bid to be admitted to membership in the European Union. From 1999 until 2009, he was the sole prisoner [1] on the İmralı island, in the Sea of Marmara. Öcalan admitted to the violent nature of the PKK, but that the period of armed warfare was defunct and a political solution to the Kurdish question should be developed. The conflict between Turkey and the PKK has resulted in over 40,000 lives being lost, including PKK members, the Turkish military, and civilians, both Kurdish and Turkish.

Vor dem Hintergrund der Bedrohung der nordsyrischen Stadt Kobane durch den Islamischen Staat (IS) schildert die Dokumentation an der sich wandelnden öffentlichen Wahrnehmung Abdullah Öcalans vom Terroristen zur "Stimme des Friedens" den Konflikt um die Eigenständigkeit der Kurden und mahnt eine Lösung der Kurdenfrage an, ohne welche die Region weiter destabilisiert würde.
Die Kämpfe kurdischer Truppen der Partei der demokratischen Union (PYD) und der Arbeiterpartei Kurdistans (PKK) gegen das Vordringen des Islamischen Staates (IS) rückten die nordsyrische Stadt Kobane in den Blick der Öffentlichkeit. Kobane wurde zum Symbol für die Zukunft der kurdischen Bevölkerung in der Türkei und in Syrien. Aus seiner Zelle auf der Insel Imrali warnte der seit 1999 dort inhaftierte PKK-Führer Abdullah Öcalan die Türkei: Sollte Kobane in die Hände des IS fallen, wäre der Friedensprozess beendet. Dieser Dialogversuch zwischen Öcalan und Ankara war der bisher weitgehendste.
Seit dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges kämpfen rund 40 Millionen Kurden in den Ländern Türkei, Syrien, Irak und Iran um Autonomie, um das Recht, ihre Sprache und Kultur zu pflegen. Damals hatte man den Kurden einen eigenen Staat versprochen. Diese Zusage wurde nie eingelöst, so sind die Kurden heute das größte Volk der Erde ohne eigenen Staat. Der Kampf um eine kulturelle Identität radikalisierte sich 1978, als die PKK gegründet wurde. Fünf Jahre später erklärte die Partei dem türkischen Staat den Krieg. In den folgenden 30 Jahren starben über 40.000 Menschen in diesem Konflikt. Und Abdullah Öcalan wurde zur Symbolfigur der kurdischen Guerilla.
Die Dokumentation schildert anhand der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung Öcalans diese Auseinandersetzung, vom Feind Nummer 1 der Türkei zur „Stimme des Friedens“, wie das US-Magazin TIME Öcalan bezeichnete. The leader of a 15-year fight for Kurdish autonomy was abject in his contrition for the guerrilla war, which has claimed the lives of 37-thousand rebels, soldiers and civilians.
The trial was held in a converted movie theater on the heavily guarded prison island Imrali, where Ocalan is the only inmate.
He is widely-expected to be convicted and sentenced to death for leading the war for Kurdish autonomy.
For 15 years, Abdullah Ocalan's guerrillas battled soldiers in the barren mountains of southeastern Turkey, fighting for the Kurdish people and their right to self-determination.
But the battle now facing the iron-fisted leader of the Kurdish rebel army is in the courtroom.
On Monday, he appeared behind bullet- and bombproof glass to defend himself against treason charges.
Ocalan, who appeared to have lost weight during his three months of detention, told the court that he had not been tortured or mistreated.
Appearing hesitant and nervous as he spoke, he pleaded for forgiveness for the deaths of five-thousand Turkish soldiers in the fight for independence.
He said that if he were allowed to contact his fighters, he could persuade his guerrillas to surrender within three months.

"For peace and brotherhood, I am ready to serve the Turkish state, and I believe that for this end I must remain alive."

"I have within my hands the capability to put a stop to this. I will put a stop to this if you give me the chance. And I want to use this chance. I may be worth nothing. Nothing comes out of thousands of people fighting eachother. The chance to be saved is in our hands, it's in our hands."

Ocalan's plea may have been a tactic to avoid the gallows or another step in the Kurdish leader's attempts to transform his faltering military struggle and international isolation into a political battle within Turkey.
Turkey has ignored several ceasefires by Kurdish rebels and Ocalan's calls to negotiate a political solution to the conflict.
The trial has evoked strong emotions among Turks, especially those who have lost sons to the struggle against the Kurds.
As the first day of the hearing drew to a close, journalists and relatives of dead soldiers who had attended were ferried back to the port of Mudaya.
There was heavy security at the port, where demonstrators waved Turkish flags in a show of patriotism.
Ali Kirva, head of the private ATV channel, was among those who attended the first day of the trial.
He said he thought Ocalan could expect little pity from his judges.

The film looks at how the Kurds are not redefining the Middle East and the role they are playing in developments in Iraq, Iran, Syria in addition to Turkey.
Intended for a western audience
The film also draws on commentary from journalist Cengiz Çandar and International Crisis Group Turkey Representative Hugh Pope in order to explain the approach by the AKP and Erdoğan to the Kurds over the past decade and a half, as well as the role which the United States is playing in the Kurdish question. Miranda explained that he wanted “a Western and Turkish expert to accompany me on this 55 minute journey.” The film also includes interview with former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, the lawyer investigating the Paris murders Antoine Comte and many other Kurdish representatives. He emphasises that the target audience for the documentary are not Kurds but a Western audience.
Rojbîn assisted in production
The film, which uses footage shot in Rojava in 2012 and touches upon the most recent ISIS attacks on Kobanê, also credits Fidan (Rojbîn) Doğan for her assistance in making the film. Rojbîn was murdered together with Sakine Cansız and Leyla Şayleme in the Paris in 2013. Miranda said about Rojbîn, “Rojbîn helped me a lot as I was first looking at ideas for the film. Miranda, who has been making documentary films since the age, has already made a number of films for French television. "As the best answer to those who say, 'Socialism has collapsed, communism has collapsed' we are saying, 'On the contrary, THE MOST POWERFUL, TRUEST AND GREATEST FORM OF COMMUNISM HAS TAKEN PLACE IN THE PKK.'"
A speech on May 1, 1982, represents one of the many occasions on which the leader of the separatist organization openly states that the PKK is a Marxist-Leninist organization:
"No matter what unsuitable conditions it may live under, IT MUST BE BASED on the objective force of the working class, and ON MARXISM-LENINISM, its science and guide to action; AND NOTE THAT THE REASON FOR OUR EXISTENCE IS TOTALLY GROUNDED IN THAT FACT... It’s taken nearly 60 years, but baffled scientists have finally figured out what the legendary “Tully Monster” is and how it lived more than 307 million years ago, a Belfast Telegraph report said. The alien-looking creature had a crane-like neck, tooth-filled jaws resembling a lobster claw and eyes mounted at either end of a bar across the middle of its back ...
