Zambia: Nevers Claims Defection of 11 MMD MPs Insignificant

MMD president Nevers Mumba has played down the defection of 11 Members of Parliament from his party by saying they defected in 2014.

And political scientist Dr Alex Ngoma said the defection of the 11 MPs may give the MMD an air of stability given that only loyal members will remain.

Mumba said the 11 led by Mumbwa Member of Parliament Brian Chituwo crossed over the moment they supported United Party for National Development leader Hakainde Hichilema in the January 20 elections last year that ushered in President Edgar Lungu.

"As far we are concerned they defected a long time ago in 2014 when they supported the UPND so for us we cannot hold the same funeral twice," Mumba said.

And Dr Ngoma said the MMD though weakened had been given a chance to work with loyal members.

He said that with the departure of the MPs there was a chance to rebuild the party from a strong standpoint with members who wanted to see the party progress.

Some MMD MPs have their support spread between the ruling Patriotic Front and the opposition UPND.
