The 2014 Iditarod trail includes some of the toughest mushing in the history of the race, veterans said. Especially early along the trail, mushers were battered and bruised on snowless ground. Four-time winner Jeff King shot this footage using a helmet cam between Rainy Pass, in the Alaska Range, and the Rohn checkpoint on Monday, March 3. The video was provided to the Anchorage Daily News (adn.com/Iditarod) by Iditarod Insider (www.iditarod.com.) The talk of the trail this year, it's one of the first-ever looks at what a musher sees while crossing some of the trickiest corners of the 1,000-mile race.

The 40th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race was won earlier this week in Nome, Alaska. Dallas Seavey, 25, bested both his father and his grandfather with his team of nine dogs, becoming the youngest musher ever to win the nearly 1,000-mile race across the Alaskan wilderness.
De Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is een jaarlijks terugkeerde sledehondenrace in Alaska (VS). Het staat bekend als "The last great race". De race start op de eerste zaterdag van maart en gaat van Anchorage naar Nome over ruim 1150 mijl (1700 km). Het record staat op circa 9 dagen. Niet alleen is de lengte een uitdaging, ook de kou (een gevoelstemperatuur van -75 C is niet vreemd) en het weer (sneeuwstormen, te veel sneeuw, te weinig sneeuw, etc) of slechte condities van de route (rivieren waar het ijs weg is, zeeijs dat afbreekt) kunnen het knap lastig maken.

Extreme athlete and adventure-seeker Patrick Sweeney lives by a philosophy that if you're not scaring yourself at least once a month, you're not living. In this 5-episode series, Patrick competes in the longest, coldest ultra endurance event in the world, the Iditarod Trail Invitational. Retracing the famous dog sled route, Patrick races his fat bike 350-miles across sub-zero Alaska, unsupported in the dead of winter.
In this episode he enters the most dangerous and difficult stage of the race. First he has to conquer Rainy Pass, the highest climb on the course and also one of the most dangerous descents. And he has to do it at night. After that it should be be easy going but climate change has caused unprecedented warm temperatures in Alaska this year and Patrick finds himself crossing barely-frozen lakes that threaten to give way under his tires at any moment.

The 2014 Iditarod trail includes some of the toughest mushing in the history of the race, veterans said. Especially early along the trail, mushers were battered and bruised on snowless ground. Four-time winner Jeff King shot this footage using a helmet cam between Rainy Pass, in the Alaska Range, and the Rohn checkpoint on Monday, March 3. The video was provided to the Anchorage Daily News (adn.com/Iditarod) by Iditarod Insider (www.iditarod.com.) The talk of the trail this year, it's one of the first-ever looks at what a musher sees while crossing some of the trickiest corners of the 1,000-mile race.

The 40th Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race was won earlier this week in Nome, Alaska. Dallas Seavey, 25, bested both his father and his grandfather with his team of nine dogs, becoming the youngest musher ever to win the nearly 1,000-mile race across the Alaskan wilderness.
De Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is een jaarlijks terugkeerde sledehondenrace in Alaska (VS). Het staat bekend als "The last great race". De race start op de eerste zaterdag van maart en gaat van Anchorage naar Nome over ruim 1150 mijl (1700 km). Het record staat op circa 9 dagen. Extreme athlete and adventure-seeker Patrick Sweeney lives by a philosophy that if you're not scaring yourself at least once a month, you're not living. In this 5-episode series, Patrick competes in the longest, coldest ultra endurance event in the world, the Iditarod Trail Invitational. Retracing the famous dog sled route, Patrick races his fat bike 350-miles across sub-zero Alaska, unsupported in the dead of winter.
In this episode he enters the most dangerous and difficult stage of the race. First he has to conquer Rainy Pass, the highest climb on the course and also one of the most dangerous descents. And he has to do it at night. After that it should be be easy going but climate change has caused unprecedented warm temperatures in Alaska this year and Patrick finds himself crossing barely-frozen lakes that threaten to give way under his tires at any moment.
