ESOcast 69 presents the result of the latest ALMA observations, which reveal extraordinarily fine detail that has never been seen before in the planet-forming disc around the young star HL Tauri.
This revolutionary image is the result of the first observations that have used ALMA with its antennas at close to the widest configuration possible. As a result, it is the sharpest picture ever made at submillimetre wavelengths.

Artist’s impression of a supermassive black hole at the centre of a galaxy
This artist’s impression shows the surroundings of a supermassive black hole, typical of that found at the heart of many galaxies. The black hole itself is surrounded by a brilliant accretion disc of very hot, infalling material and, further out, a dusty torus. There are also often high-speed jets of material ejected at the black hole’s poles that can extend huge distances into space. Observations

Stargazing at Chilean observatory fascinates Chinese astronomer
Due to the crystal clear night skies over Paranal Mountain in northern Chile’s Atacama Desert, it was chosen as the site to place the world’s finest optical telescopes.
This is where the European Southern Observatory (ESO), founded in 1963 by 14 European nations, set up its Very Large Telescope (VLT) for astronomical observation.
Chinese astronomer Yang Bin was fortunate enough to conduct astronomic research as the only Chinese female scientist here.
(Soundbite) Yang Bin, Chinese Astronomer
“I feel that I can bring new techniques I learned, and introduce the most popular and promising projects into China to promote the cooperation between China and the world.”
Before joining the ESO, Yang worked for three years at China’s National Astronomical Observatory. But the excellent geological location and outstanding telescopes at Paranal finally lured her away.
During her stay here, Yang witnessed the quick process that China narrowed its gap on astronomical observation with the forerunners in the world.
(Soundbite) Yang Bin, Chinese Astronomer
“When I worked in China, we didn’t have much equipment, and there were not many opportunities to work with partners from abroad. But at present, Chinese scientists are collaborating significantly with foreign experts and China is also working on developing its own equipment. The gap is narrowing and right now the gap is mainly due to the confinement of the equipment.”
Northern Chile’s desert region is one of the best places on earth for astronomical observation.
The dry and clear weather makes it for ideal sky-watching, and there is no light pollution because it’s far away from any cities.
By 2020, Chile is expected to host around 70 percent of all ground-based astronomical observation facilities.

What lies at the heart of our galaxy? For twenty years, ESO’s Very Large Telescope and the Keck telescopes have observed the centre of the Galaxy, looking at the motion of more than a hundred stars and identifying the position of an otherwise invisible object — the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy.
Embark on a Journey to the Centre of the Milky Way and during seven minutes travel faster than light, from the driest place on Earth, the Atacama Desert in Chile right to the centre of our own galaxy, where a black hole is consuming anything that strays into its path. 84 million stars will appear in front of your eyes, each hiding mysteries waiting to be solved. Are there planets around them, perhaps with moons? Do they have water? Could they harbour life?
Journey to the Centre of the Milky Way is the first fulldome planetarium mini-show produced in-house by ESO for its Planetarium and Visitor Centre, the ESO Supernova, due to open in 2017. Available for free in 4k resolution, the mini-show can be downloaded and used by any planetarium in the world.

Observations with ALMA have detected a very strong magnetic field close to the black hole at the base of the jets and this is probably involved in jet production and collimation.

A close look at part of the Coalsack Nebula
This video takes a close-up look at a new image from the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope. It shows part of the huge cloud of dust and gas known as the Coalsack Nebula, close to the Southern Cross in the southern Milky Way. The dust in this nebula absorbs and scatters the light from background stars, making many of them appear fainter and redder.

Explanation of how the magnetic field on a star affects the light emitted
This animation shows what happens as a sunspot (or starspot) forms and the magnetic field increases in strength. The light emerging from the spot starts to demonstrate the Zeeman effect. The dark spectra lines in the spectrum of the emitted light split into three components and the strength of the circular polarisation in parts of the spectrum increases significantly. This polarisation effect is a

The detection of starspots using polarisation measurements
This animation explains how a spot on the surface of a distant star can be detected and measured using polarisation. As the star rotates the spectrum of the light coming from the region of a spot is split because of the magnetic field, by the Zeeman Effect, and also shifted by the Doppler Effect. In addition a significant circularly polarised signal can be detected in parts of the spectrum. This i

Filmed in 4K. Produced by Gala Media and Cybermagic in Association with ESO - The European Southern Observatory.
Biosphere is a trilogy of movies about our planet. Is a non narrative documentary shot in 4K that captivates audiences with visuals and sound from around the world. More than a million people have seen the original Biosphere movie in less than a year and audiences continue to grow. Award winning film composer Jennifer Athena Galatis teamed up with director cinematographer Dominique Müller and producer Lars Lindberg from ESO to create the trilogy.
Biosphere Continuum is Part II of the trilogy and is shot across the globe in many different countries. The movie shows many aspects of the human life as part of the Biosphere - the good and the bad, funny and sad. While sadly the humans work on their not so far away extinction, the Biosphere and our Planet will continue to exist. Among many filming locations worldwide, the crew also went to Nepal to capture the aftermath and devastation of the deadly earthquake and how citizens are coping with the disaster.

ESO telescopes are being used to search for the subtle signs of magnetic fields in other stars and even to map out the star spots on their surfaces.
This information is beginning to reveal how and why so many stars, including our own Sun, are magnetic, and what the implications might be for life on Earth and elsewhere in the Universe.

This video gives us a close-up view of the rose-coloured star forming region Messier 17. The picture was captured by the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile. It is one of the sharpest images showing the entire nebula and not only reveals its full size but also retains fine detail throughout the cosmic landscape of gas clouds, dust and newborn stars.

This video zoom takes a closer look at the Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy, pictured in new image from the Wide Field Imager camera, installed on the 2.2-metre MPG/ESO telescope at ESO’s La Silla Observatory. This elusive galaxy is a close neighbour of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Despite their proximity, both galaxies have very distinct histories and characters. This galaxy is much smaller, fainter and older than the Milky Way. It appears here as a rich cloud of faint stars at the centre of the image at the start, and completely fills the frame later on. Here and there much more distant galaxies can be spotted between the stars of the Sculptor Dwarf.

The world's largest and most powerful gamma-ray observatory looks set to be based in Chile and the Canary Islands, following a decision today by the governing board of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Sites in the Atacama Desert and the island of La Palma—already home to major astronomical facilities—were chosen ahead of rival sites in Namibia and Mexico for the northern and southern portions of the CTA, a €297 million facility that will allow astrophysicists to study some of the most energetic and distant objects in the universe.
The decision came during a 2-day meeting of the CTA Resource Board on 15 and 16 July. The board, made of representatives from 14 of the project’s 31 member countries, did not give final approval for the site selection—that is the job of the CTA Council—but it did vote to start formal negotiations with the European Southern Observatory (ESO), which operates the Paranal Observatory in Chile, and Spain.
Chair of CTA Resource Board Beatrix Vierkorn-Rudolph would not tell ScienceInsider how the 14 members voted. But she says it was not an easy decision, since all 4 bidders put forward "very good sites." The selection criteria were many, she explains, including the sites' environmental suitability, scientific potential, and likely cost. But one factor stood out in both cases, she says—how swiftly construction could get underway once the official green light has been given.
The Chilean site is less than 10 kilometers from the ESO’s Paranal Observatory, which has significant infrastructure—like the four, 8.2-meter optical observatories of the Very Large Telescope—already in place. The northern site, which is operated by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canaries, sits at an altitude of 2200 meters and is already home to the 2 MAGIC gamma-ray telescopes (pictured above).
The CTA, which should be completed by around the end of the decade, would allow scientists to carry out a range of research projects across astrophysics and fundamental physics, from the origin of cosmic rays to particle acceleration around black holes. The array would also look for signs of hypothetical dark matter particles. It would comprise 120 individual telescopes of 3 different diameters (24, 10-12, and 4-6 meters), about 100 of which would be located in the southern hemisphere. Like existing ground-based gamma-ray observatories, the telescopes wouldn't detect gamma rays directly but would instead pick up the flashes of light given off when gamma radiation interacts with atoms in the upper atmosphere.
Rene Ong, an astrophysicist at the University of California Los Angeles and CTA co-spokesperson, says that negotiations with the hosts of the preferred sites should take about 6 months. During that time, he says, CTA member countries will need to establish, among other things, whether money offered as part of the site bids really will be made available. He says that Spain has offered to contribute "upwards of €40 million" in support of the La Palma site, while ESO has not made any financial offer but is interested in partnering on the science and management of CTA. He also notes that the ESO council has still to formally approve its site proposal.
Ong says that a number of member countries have shown a "strong intention" to provide funding for the project. However, the threshold of about 80% funding—at which point construction could be approved—has yet to be reached. He hopes the line can be crossed in the next year. If it isn't, he says, the project scope may need to be “adjusted.”

Large City On Pluto In "HEART" Shaped Area! ~ Or?
*Please Watch to the End!
**Watch in HD and in Full Screen
Hey Guys ......This photo, of Pluto, is simply mind boggling! They (NASA) have done their homework on trying to hide what is actaully there. In my opinion, there appears to be an extremely large city in the 'HEART' shaped area on Pluto. These look like thousands of structures with tiny structures on top of them or, Layed platforms with s

The European Southern Observatory was established in 1962 with the aim of fostering collaboration between European astronomers. It operates an observatory at the 2640-m high summit of the La Silla mountain in the Chilean Atacama desert. Currently, there are 14 optical telescopes (between 0.4 and 3.6-m) and a 15-m submillimetre telescope at the observatory. The telescope park includes the 3.5-m New Technology Telescope, one of the most advanced optical telescopes ever built.
ESOs next telescope will be the 16-m equivalent aperture Very Large Telescope (VLT) which will become the worlds largest astronomical telescope.
ESOs headquarters are located in Garching, near Munich, Germany. Here, an important scientific research centre has been established, where scientists from all over the world work together in various fields of research and development. Currently, 8 European countries are members of the organisation.
Through its many activities, ESO provides a window on the Universe for Europes astronomers and a possibility for European researchers to remain at the forefront of their science.

ESA’s anniversary DVD film “Hubble - 15 years of discovery” covers all aspects of the Hubble Space Telescope project – a journey through the history, the troubled early life and the ultimate scientific successes of Hubble. This portrait, directed by Lars Lindberg Christensen, contains large amounts of previously unpublished footage of superb quality. With more than 500,000 copies distributed, this DVD movie is probably the most widely available science documentary ever.
Hubble's spectacular visual images make a stunning backdrop throughout the film, bringing an immediacy and vitality as the narrative reveals the new insights Hubble has inspired in all fields of astronomy from exoplanets to black holes. Complex though the science behind the telescope’s images often is, Art Director Martin Kornmesser has developed a unique style of elaborate 3D animation that enhances and vividly clarifies the underlying science.
The movie is presented by an ESA scientist, Dr. Robert (Bob) Fosbury, who has himself used Hubble for his own research on many occasions.

Conférence donnée à aux Ateliers du think-tank The Shift Project le 12 mars 2015, par François Roddier, astrophysicien.
LA THERMODYNAMIQUE DES TRANSITIONS ÉCONOMIQUES
I Notions de thermodynamique

Hey Guys ......This photo, of Pluto, is simply mind boggling! They (NASA) have done their homework on trying to hide what is actaully there. In my opinion, there appears to be an extremely large city in the 'HEART' shaped area on Pluto. These look like thousands of structures with tiny structures on top of them or, Layed platforms with structures on them. Are these simply compression marks or the real deal? Comment down below and give me your take, especially if you are a profeesional photographer. Share the video and give me a thumbs up. Always appreciated! ............Regards, Chris.
As always, look for the picture links at the bottom of the description. Thanks for Watching! Best Regards, Chris....
