Periorbital dark circles (also known as dark circles) are dark blemishes around the eyes. There are many causes of this symptom, including heredity and bruising.
In most cases, the dark circles under the eyes are blood vessels that can be seen through the skin. The skin around the eyelids (periorbital skin) is the thinnest skin in the body (around 0.5 mm thick compared with 2mm in other areas). Like varicose veins, dark circles under the eyes are usually an inherited trait. When blood passes through the large veins close to the surface of the skin, it can produce a bluish tint. The more transparent the skin—also an inherited trait—the darker the circles appear. In people with a deep-set bone structure, shadowing can also contribute to the dark color under the eyes.
Any condition that causes the eyes to itch can contribute to darker circles due to rubbing or scratching the skin around them. Hay fever sufferers in particular will notice under-eye "smudges" during the height of the allergy season. Some food allergies can also cause the area under the eyes to appear darker.

You said you’d never get tired of me
You swore that there was no one who made you feel like I made you feel
Now I don’t feel anything at all
I’m numb from the alcohol
That I’ve been drinking in large dosed
Down and down and down
(Chorus)
There’s dark circles around my eyes
And a wall around my heart
That you put there
You left and I fell apart
And now there’s holes in my walls
And dark circles all around
These eyes you called so blue
You said you never could lie to me
You swore that there was no one who saw through you
Like I saw through you
Now let me tell you what I see
I see a man staring back at me
Who’s been broken by lie after lie after lie
(Chorus)
I thought that I was stronger but I guess that stronger doesn’t really mean anything
No doesn’t mean a thing
I said I’d never say goodbye to you
I swore that there was no one who’d mean to me
What you meant to me
And now I’m wondering what it means
I see your face in a thousand scenes
That keep on playing in my mind
Over and over and over
