There's a right way and a wrong way to prepare absinthe. Absinthe is never supposed to be served as a shot. It should always be diluted with water and sweetened with sugar. Also, contrary to popular belief, fire should play no part in the absinthe preparation process. Absinthe purist would never use fire because it serves no purpose other than to create a spectacle.

Everyone in the office is a winner this week as Michael Truly and Chris Legarce of Why Would You Eat That? explore the bohemian sensation -- absinthe. This chartreuse-colored liquor is made by distilling fennel, wormwood, and anise after a fermentation process. It then gets its traditional milky green color from the slow addition of sugar. The heavy licorice-tasting alcohol became popular in France after bugs killed grapes and people didn't have wine. Then people drank too much and because man-eating zombies or murders or something... Absinthe (
i/ˈæbsɪnθ/ AB-sinth or /ˈæbsænθ/ AB-santh; French: [absɛ̃t] ) is historically described as a distilled, highly alcoholic (45–74% ABV / 90-148 proof) beverage. It is an anise-flavoured spirit derived from botanicals, including the flowers and leaves of Artemisia absinthium (a.k.a. "grand wormwood"), together with green anise, sweet fennel, and other medicinal and culinary herbs. Absinthe traditionally has a natural green colour but may also be colourless. It is commonly referred to in historical literature as "la fée verte" (the green fairy). Although it is sometimes mistakenly referred to as a liqueur, absinthe is not traditionally bottled with added sugar, and is therefore classified as a spirit. Absinthe is traditionally bottled at a high level of alcohol by volume, but is normally diluted with water prior to being consumed.
Absinthe originated in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland in the late 18th century. It arose to great popularity as an alcoholic drink in late 19th- and early 20th-century France, particularly among Parisian artists and writers. Owing in part to its association with bohemian culture, the consumption of absinthe was opposed by social conservatives and prohibitionists. Ernest Hemingway, Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Amedeo Modigliani, Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Aleister Crowley and Alfred Jarry were all known absinthe drinkers.

According to my experience. Ingredients: Absinthium (dried out) - 100 g, flowers and small leafs Anise seeds - 50 g Fennel seeds - 50 g Alcohol - 950 Ml, 95% ABV Water - 200 Ml For pigmenting: absinthium - 0,5 g hyssop - 10 g melissa - 5 g Cooking process: Mix alcohol with water (water into alcohol). This chartreuse-colored liquor is made by distilling fennel, wormwood, and anise after a fermentation process. It then gets its traditional milky green color from the slow addition of sugar. The heavy licorice-tasting alcohol became popular in France after bugs killed grapes and people didn't have wine. Then people drank too much and because man-eating zombies or murders or something... In this episode of Al-Kee-Hol, we followed our host Dominique Rousake on a trip along the “Route de l’Absinthe”, the beautiful French-Swiss absinthe route, and watched as he learns about the history and effects of absinthe—the potent, anise-flavored spirit that was a favorite of Vincent van Gogh, Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allan Poe, Oscar Wilde, as well as many more artists and thinkers.
Dominique meets up with the owners of French and Swiss distilleries to find out more about the differences between their nations’ varieties of absinthe. They share a few of the stories about how and why absinthe was made illegal—and how people continued to make it anyway. The people who live along the absinthe route are crazy about the "green fairy," and we witness their passion firsthand. The journey traverses snowy hills and vast forests, ending in France, where absinthe was first invented. Here, Dominique tries a meal comprised of mostly absinthe ingredients.

Savor the potent spirit – up to 140 proof! – that is once again being sold in the U.S. after a nearly century-long ban.
Step 1:
Pour an ounce or two of absinthe into a tall, heavy, thick-stemmed glass, like a parfait glass.
Step 2:
Place an absinthe spoon – a flat, metal, slotted spoon – across the rim of the glass.
Step 3:
Put a sugar cube on the slots of the spoon.
Step 4:
Slowly drip three to six ounces of cold spring water over the sugar cube until the sugar is dissolved. The absinthe will turn from transparent green to a cloudy green or yellow.
Tip
Some people dip the sugar cube in absinthe and set the cube on fire before dousing it with ice water.
Step 5:
Stir with the slotted spoon and enjoy.

hi. we took 5 shots of absinthe in total and they weren't so bad!! (Except for the hot one..) Neither of us threw up either. I've never done a video quite like this, it was kind of cool to sit down and basically taste test alcohol for you all! Please drink responsibly and don't drive if you drink.

Absinthe recipe, homemade alcoholic drink
The recipe based on Absinthe Suisse de Pontarlier 1855 and Absinthe Extra-Fine 1891 recipes.
According to my experience.
Ingredients:
Absinthium (dried out) - 100 g, flowers and small leafs
Anise seeds - 50 g
Fennel seeds - 50 g
Alcohol - 950 Ml, 95% ABV
Water - 200 Ml
For pigmenting:
absinthium - 0,5 g
hyssop - 10 g
melissa - 5 g
Cooking process:
Mix alcohol with water (water into alcohol). Fill up an empty jar with herbs and seeds and blend it all. Let it infuse in the darkness at room temperature muddling it every day. Let it infuse minimum 2 weeks, in my situation it was 1 month.
Than pour out 700 Ml of water with herbs infusion into the boiler.
The distillation must be done at ash fire by using moonshine still with valve.
ATTENTION! The distillation is highly inflammable!
You must separate the hearts drop by drop.
I’ve separated 20-30 Ml of foreshots being guided by smell, than separated slowly about 3-4 drops per second. Totally I’ve got 900-950 Ml of hearts and you must be very carefully with the last 100 Ml, because the tails arrive very strident. After 500-600 Ml you can see the absinthe’s becoming yellow - it’s ok.
After the distillation pour 400 Ml into another jar and fill it up with herbs for pigmenting (you can use different herbs for it). Let it infuse about 2 days in the dark place. You need pigmenting for making our absinthe green and for taste correction. You may skip the pigmenting stage.
Than mix the infusion for pigmenting with another part of absinthe and filter it. Add water if ypu want to water it down, I watered it down till 72% ABV (Alcohol by volume).
Put it into the dark place for aging from 1 week till 1 month.
Absinthe may consists of big amount of absinthium but the bitterness is mild. You can not only drink it in pure form (it must get cooled down), but also with cocktails.
