LEWISTON, ID - Two Rabbis from New York made their way through Lewiston Monday as part of the Idaho "Roving Rabbi" tour.
It's not everyday you see Rabbis strolling through Lewiston.
"We'll be walking in the street and Hey! You're the Rabbis, what's up," said Roving Rabbi Chaim Cohen. "They start a conversation, so you know we find Jewish people that way. But the most important thing is people don't get this everyday."
Roving Rabbis Berel Kesselman and Chaim Cohen are on a three week tour through Idaho as part of a program that started in the early 40's.
"In the beginning it started out as going out in little towns in upstate New York and visiting the Jewish people there," said Roving Rabbi Berel Kesselman. "Slowly it expanded and now there's over 600 of us, 300 pairs that travel all over the world."
For Cohen, his purpose over the three weeks is clear, to meet Jewish people in the area.
"I'm from Montreal," said Cohen. "Berel is from London. We have big Jewish communities where we come from and we're studying in Brooklyn, massive Jewish communities. Here in Idaho, there is not a lot of Jewish identity in these small cities."
He said it's the lack of Judaism in the region that sometimes doesn't allow people to be completely open with their faith. The Roving Rabbis carry resources and other religious tools to give to those interested in learning or re-learning about their religious faith.
"See who they are, come and visit them and try and re-awaken the Judaism in them, in their soul," said Cohen.
"Seeing the reactions of the people over here it's just beautiful," said Kesselman. "It's very rewarding seeing how happy people are to see us."
Cohen said unlike other places they've traveled, Idahoans have been exceptionally welcoming.
"You need help, need directions, need anything, people are very understanding," said Cohen. "And the welcome we got not only from the Jewish community but from all communities here was really, really beautiful and that is something that I appreciate a lot."
Kesselman said their Lewiston leg of their journey ends Monday after stopping at a few homes. They'll head to Boise to continue the last week of their trip tonight.

As part of their ongoing "ScienceCasts" video series, Science@NASA reminds just how closely experts from around the world have been keeping a wary eye on Greenland's ice sheet. The result has been a mountain of research all showing the same thing: under the thinning of ice is a whole lot of nothing, and that's not good news. As the video warns, experts with NASA and various other professional institutions have already determined that the water trapped as Greenland's ice could effectively raise the height of the world's seas by a whopping 23 feet (7m) - that is, if it ALL melted into the ocean. What's worrying is that it seems that we're already well on our way to getting to that point. LEWISTON, ID - Two Rabbis from New York made their way through Lewiston Monday as part of the Idaho "Roving Rabbi" tour.
It's not everyday you see Rabbis strolling through Lewiston.
"We'll be walking in the street and Hey! You're the Rabbis, what's up," said Roving Rabbi Chaim Cohen. "They start a conversation, so you know we find Jewish people that way. But the most important thing is people don't get this everyday."
Roving Rabbis Berel Kesselman and Chaim Cohen are on a three week tour through Idaho as part of a program that started in the early 40's.
"In the beginning it started out as going out in little towns in upstate New York and visiting the Jewish people there," said Roving Rabbi Berel Kesselman. "Slowly it expanded and now there's over 600 of us, 300 pairs that travel all over the world."
For Cohen, his purpose over the three weeks is clear, to meet Jewish people in the area.
"I'm from Montreal," said Cohen. "Berel is from London. We have big Jewish communities where we come from and we're studying in Brooklyn, massive Jewish communities. Here in Idaho, there is not a lot of Jewish identity in these small cities."
He said it's the lack of Judaism in the region that sometimes doesn't allow people to be completely open with their faith. The Roving Rabbis carry resources and other religious tools to give to those interested in learning or re-learning about their religious faith.
"See who they are, come and visit them and try and re-awaken the Judaism in them, in their soul," said Cohen.
"Seeing the reactions of the people over here it's just beautiful," said Kesselman. "It's very rewarding seeing how happy people are to see us."
Cohen said unlike other places they've traveled, Idahoans have been exceptionally welcoming.
"You need help, need directions, need anything, people are very understanding," said Cohen. "And the welcome we got not only from the Jewish community but from all communities here was really, really beautiful and that is something that I appreciate a lot."
Kesselman said their Lewiston leg of their journey ends Monday after stopping at a few homes. They'll head to Boise to continue the last week of their trip tonight.

As part of their ongoing "ScienceCasts" video series, Science@NASA reminds just how closely experts from around the world have been keeping a wary eye on Greenland's ice sheet. The result has been a mountain of research all showing the same thing: under the thinning of ice is a whole lot of nothing, and that's not good news.
As the video warns, experts with NASA and various other professional institutions have already determined that the water trapped as Greenland's ice could effectively raise the height of the world's seas by a whopping 23 feet (7m) - that is, if it ALL melted into the ocean. What's worrying is that it seems that we're already well on our way to getting to that point.
Some may argue that NASA scientists and their partners may be jumping the gun when assessing Greenland. After all, the current rate of sea level rise is still very slow, at about two millimeters every year. What's more, while the ice-shelves of Earth's other major water-lock, Antarctica, continue to melt faster than ever before, they are still melting slower than many experts previously warned.
However, new research has also revealed that Greenland's ice sheet is more sensitive to climate shifts than previously thought - a factor that may contribute to the fact that the melt rate of Antarctica appears to lag some 200 years behind that of Greenland

Prosecutors have searched premises at VW's headquarters in Germany as part of their criminal inquiry into the firm's emissions scandal.
The raids were carried out in Wolfsburg and at a number of other locations.
Officials said they were targeting information relating to the creation of the company's diesel engine software - designed to cheat emissions-testing.
In a statement announcing the raids, the prosecutors said the aim of the searches was to "secure documents and data storage devices" that could identify those involved.
VW has suspended four members of staff over the affair, which is set to lead to 11 million VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda vehicles being recalled worldwide in a process that could last until late next year.
There are 1.2 million vehicles affected in the UK.

The company's new chief executive Matthias Mueller said earlier this week that VW, which has already set aside €6.5bn to cover the costs of the scandal, was reviewing all its investment plans.
It is believed that recalls and potential legal action by regulators and car owners will raise that figure by a significant margin.

As part of their Documented Rights Exhibit, the National Archives at St. Louis hosted a panel to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation draft. The panel featured an impressive group of St. Louis academic scholars and local community leaders. Panelists examined the following topics: the period leading up to the Emancipation Proclamation's passage; response to the proclamation; accomplishments in education since the proclamation's passage; and baseball great Jackie Robinson's military court martial for refusing to give up his seat on a bus. This program was held in conjunction with the Documented Rights civil rights eight-month exhibition which recently closed.
Speakers:
Lynne M. Jackson is the great-great granddaughter of Dred and Harriet Scott and founder of The Dred Scott Heritage Foundation of St. Louis, MO.
Reverend Dr. Robert Charles Scott is the pastor of Central Baptist Church of St. Louis where Dred and Harriet Scott attended services in the 19th century.
Moderator:
Bonita Cornute is one of St. Louis' most distinguished broadcast journalists. She is currently a consumer affairs reporter with Fox 2 in St. Louis. Cornute is an award-winning journalist and the recipient of numerous awards for her work in journalism and her work in the community. Her career spans more than 20 years in the St. Louis area.

Dr. Louis Saxton Gerteis is a professor of history at the University of Missouri-St. Louis where he specializes in 19th century United States history, slavery, emancipation, civil war, and reconstruction history. Gerteis will examine Missouri's role as a border state and events leading up to the drafting (1862) and eventual order (1863) of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Mr. James Vincent, Sr. is the cofounder of The St. Louis African-American History and Genealogy Society (AAHS). He currently chairs AAHS's state committees for Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois. Vincent will discuss responses to the Emancipation Proclamation's passage.
Dr. Priscilla A. Dowden-White is an associate professor of history at the University of Missouri-St. Louis where she teaches United States history. She specializes in African-American, African, and Latin history. Dowden-White will present a paper titled, Educating Missouri's Black Citizenry from Emancipation to Brown [Brown v. Board of Education,1954]
Dr. Gerald Early is a professor of English and the Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters at Washington University in St. Louis. Early will discuss baseball great Jackie Robinson's court martial by the U.S. Army when Robinson refused to give up his seat on a bus in 1944.

My three brothers and I grew up listening to garbage from some of the musicians in this documentary. When I was 20, two girls came to our door, gave us a Christian tract, and left. After awhile, when no one was around, I saw the tract, picked it up, sat down in a chair in the living room and read it. God won the 'very real' spiritual battle going on inside me as I sat in that chair asking Jesus to forgive my sins and help me. Jesus forgave me. He gave me peace for the first time in my life. Jesus changed my heart.

My three brothers and I grew up listening to garbage from some of the musicians in this documentary. When I was 20, two girls came to our door, gave us a Christian tract, and left. After awhile, when no one was around, I saw the tract, picked it up, sat down in a chair in the living room and read it. God won the 'very real' spiritual battle going on inside me as I sat in that chair asking Jesus to forgive my sins and help me. Jesus forgave me. He gave me peace for the first time in my life. Jesus changed my heart.
