FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tomboy Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) has good reason to be morbid: her mother died giving birth to her, and her father (Dan Aykroyd) operates a funeral service out of their home. The other kids think she's a freak, and it certainly doesn't help that her best friend, Thomas J. Sennett (Macaulay Culkin), is a boy. To make matters worse, Vada is desperately in love with her English teacher, Mr. Bixler (Griffin Dunne). What's an 11-year-old girl to do?

Howard Zieff
Howard Zieff (21 October 1927 – 22 February 2009), (pronounced Zeef ) was an American director, television commercial director, and advertising photographer.
Biography
Zieff was born to Jewish parents in Chicago, Illinois, then moved to Los Angeles, CA. with his family. He studied art for one year at Los Angeles City College, then dropped out in 1946 to join the United States Navy. He learned photography at the Naval Photography School in Pensacola, Florida and then, after his discharge, at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He became a commercial photographer in New York City in the 1950s, earning a reputation in the 1960s as one of the city's best-known advertising photographers. His campaigns included "You Don't Have To Be Jewish" for Levy's rye bread, "Mamma Mia, that's a spicy meatball" for Alka-Seltzer, and ads for the New York Daily News, Polaroid, and Volkswagen. His advertising was known for its humor as well as its high production values; for a Hertz rental-car ad, he commissioned the construction of a facsimile of West Hollywood's Sunset Strip, while an ad for Tetley tea included locating old Spitfire planes.

Tomboy Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) has good reason to be morbid: her mother died giving birth to her, and her father (Dan Aykroyd) operates a funeral service out of their home. The movements of the Tenth Symphony are as follows:
1. Moderato
2. Allegro (at 21:05)
3. Allegretto (at 24:55)
4. Andante (at 35:25) - Allegro (at 40:37)
This was the first recording in the West of Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony, and remains to this day one of the most searingly intense.
Shostakovich admitted in his memoirs that the second movement of this symphony was a musical portrait of Joseph Stalin (whose picture, therefore, is seen in this video while the movement is being played), and I can think of no other music in the symphonic repertoire which blazes with this amount of hatred and rage. Mitropoulos's version of this movement is the fastest on record.
Charles Burr, in his liner note for ML-4959 (which is for the most part a long essay about the relationship of the Soviet composer to his government, a favorite theme of McCarthy-era commentators), says of the conclusion of the symphony that "there is an escape from tragedy back into the happiness of childhood, for it is only childhood that permits the dwelling once again in personal, non-political emotions." And yet the very odd cover of the LP (which is shown during the Allegro section of the last movement) displays a young boy who doesn't look very happy to me! while behind him a faceless figure - obviously one of authority - stands in a displeased pose with arms crossed. If this isn't a metaphor for the relationship between the composer and the state, I don't know what is. This photograph was taken by Howard Zieff, later to become a film director, best known for "My Girl" and "Private Benjamin."

Vada, a hypochondriac tomboy whose best friend is the shy Thomas J. (Macaulay Culkin), lives in an eccentric household headed by her widower/mortician father, Harry (Dan Aykroyd). When Shelly (Jamie Lee Curtis) comes to work at the funeral parlor as the new cosmetologist, a change comes over Harry. Emotionally detached, even from his family, since the death of his wife, Harry suddenly becomes happier than Vada has ever seen him, causing a confusing sensation of jealousy in Vada, who craves more love and attention from her dad.
