The Drudge Report is a news aggregation website. Run by Matt Drudge with the help of Joseph Curl and Charles Hurt, the site consists mainly of links to stories from the United States and international mainstream media about politics, entertainment, and current events as well as links to many columnists. The Drudge Report is often considered conservative in tone, though the sources cited and linked run the gamut of political leanings.
Occasionally, Drudge authors news stories himself based on tips. The Report originated in 1996 as a weekly subscriber-based email dispatch. It was most famous for being the first news source to break the Monica Lewinsky scandal to the public after Newsweek decided not to publish the story.
The Drudge Report started as a gossip column focusing on Hollywood and Washington, D.C. Matt Drudge began the email-based newsletter called Report from an apartment in Hollywood, California, using his connections with industry and media insiders to break stories, sometimes before they hit the mainstream media. Drudge maintains the website from his home in Miami Beach, Florida, with help from his assistants, who assist in story selection and headline writing. His first assistant was Andrew Breitbart. Breitbart, who described himself as "Matt Drudge’s bitch", worked the afternoon shift at the Drudge Report, as well as running his own website (breitbart.com), and another website (BigHollywood.com) providing a conservative perspective for people in the Los Angeles entertainment industry.John Ziegler (talk show host) has said that Drudge blocked Breitbart from posting content critical of Barack Obama during the 2008 campaign for the Presidency.
Matthew Nathan "Matt" Drudge (born October 27, 1966) is the American creator and editor of the Drudge Report, a news aggregation website that also breaks major news stories. Drudge is self-described as being conservative and populist. Drudge has also authored a book and hosted a radio show and a television show.
Matthew Drudge was raised in Takoma Park, Maryland, near Washington, DC. His parents are Reform Jewish Democrats who both worked for the federal government, and he is their only child. His father, Robert Drudge, a former social worker who owns the reference site www.refdesk.com, and his mother, a former staff attorney for U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy, divorced when he was six. Drudge went to live with his mother. He had few friends and was an avid news reader and radio talk show fan. In his book Drudge Manifesto, Drudge says that he "failed his Bar Mitzvah", and graduated 341st out of a class of 355 from Northwood High School in 1984, giving himself, in his words, a "more than adequate curriculum vitae for a post at 7-Eleven".
