Record 16-Foot
Python Bagged in
Florida Removal Effort
A worker with the
Conservancy of Southwest Florida displays a python during the “Python
Challenge,†which corralled more than 2,
000 pounds of snakes. How has the state faced the challenge of dealing with
150,000 non-native snake threatening its biodiversity? Most of the snake hunters are amateurs, so they're given some instruction:
Drink water, wear sunscreen, don’t get bitten by anything and don’t shoot anyone. A gigantic
Burmese python stretching a record-setting 16 feet long and weighing
140 pounds was among the more than 2,000 pounds of snakes captured in southwest Florida over the past three months, the
Bradenton Herald reported Friday.

Snitch' pythons lead to other snakes in Florida
Researchers in Florida are using so-called "snitch" snakes to lead them to
Burmese Pythons that have become an invasive species in the
Everglades. Researcher believe it's the largest male python ever documented in south Florida. Some of the captured snakes are being used to help researchers learn about the ecological impact of the snakes which are rapidly reproducing in
Florida's warm climate.

CBS 4 reports that the huge snake, measuring 18-feet-3-inches long, was captured at
Shark Valley in
Everglades National Park on July 9. The reptile was caught by a permitted python researcher who regularly works in Everglades National Park. Its considered an invasive species one that began emerging in Florida decades ago due in large part to the international pet trade.

Snake
Hunters Descend on Florida Everglades for Python-Killing ...
The tens of thousands of pythons pulsating through the Everglades have essentially no natural predators in Florida to keep them in check. This is the hardest thing that anybody's going to hunt, python pursuer
Dusty Crum told
NBC News. Snake slayers such as Crum have captured at least 102 of the slithering serpents during this year's hunt – already surpassing the 68 total in
2013, when the first and only other challenge was held, wildlife officials said.
It's just a frenzy when you see a big snake and he's striking at you and you're dancing with him, Crum said.
