Regional politicians about innovation in Active and Healthy Ageing
The annual AAL Forum 2013 (Ambient Assisted Living Forum) takes place in Sweden, September 24-26th. The AAL Forum is the place to be for everyone in Europe playing a role in Ambient Assisted Living and innovation in the field of Active and Healthy Ageing. AAL is about smart ICT solutions and services for independent living and integrated care. During last years AAL Forum in Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant more than 1300 participants exchanged experiences and ideas. The AAL Joint Programme is an important pillar in the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP AHA), initiated by the European Commission.
Introduction
European regions and regional governments play an essential role in the implementation and scaling of smart solutions for independent living and integrated care. All over Europe regional innovation clusters - and regional politicians supporting them - make a difference. A lot of those regional clusters are part of the EIP AHA and recently got awarded by the European Commission with one or more stars.
Why you?
That's why we are organising a side event short before the Grand Opening of the AAL Forum about the regional perspective and the role of politicians. We want to hear your story as a politician representing your region and your regional innovation cluster. In a programme of about 90 minutes we will have a lively debate in which about 10 to 15 regional politicians from all over Europe participate. The European Commission will speak about the importance of regional involvement.
The three main topics are:
• How are you working on innovation on Active and Healthy Ageing and Ambient Assisted Living in your region? Do you have a regional innovation cluster? Do you have an innovation strategy or policy? What barriers do you experience? What is to your opinion the added value of the regional level in Europe?
• What are you doing - as a regional government - to connect your region and innovation cluster to the European level? Are you connected to other regional clusters in Europe? How is your involvement in networks and partnerships like the EIP AHA, Coral, Euregha or Interreg?
• How can the European Commission support your innovation strategy and regional innovation cluster?
Special role of politicians
The event has a high level character with regional ministers, (vice) governors, (vice) mayors and other politicians from a wide diversity of European regions and larger cities. You are the ambassador of your region and your innovation cluster. Most of all you are the ambassador of those state of the art regions in Europe most active in the domain of innovation in Active and Healthy Ageing. The programme will be a showcase of European regional policy on Active and Healthy Ageing.
The programme
The program will be a talk show, meaning there are no speeches but a professional moderator interviews you. You can react to the other politicians around the table and there will be lively interaction. The moderator will make sure that everyone will have his or her say and there is interaction with the audience. The program will be in English language. A selection of short 2-minute video clips - made by you - will be used as part of the program.

The side event is initiated and organised by Coral, the AER and Euregha. All of them European networks of regions contributing to a community of innovating partners on Active and Healthy Ageing. Coral, AER and Euregha join effort more often representing the regional perspective in Europe and are active in the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing.

End of October the fourth Brabant Investors Day took place at the Provincial building in Den Bosch. Mr Wim van de Donk, Queens Commissioner, officially opened the event with a word of welcome to more than 130 participants. Mr Allard Bruinshoofd, Head of International Macroeconomic Research at Rabobank took the audience on a journey. They travelled from Brabant, to the bunch of grapes (geopgraphical clusters) in which the province is situated in Europe, zooming out to the world and even the universe.
The position of the Netherlands and Brabant in the world, the regional competitiveness and the choices that need to be made by the provincial governement was discussed by a panel. The audience also joined in, by voting for the various statements. The discussion was lead by René Buck, of Buck Consultants International, who combined serious issues with laughter. The panel consisted of Mr Bert Pauli (Regional Minister for Economic and International Affairs Province of Brabant) Ms Maja Markovic (Finance Director Tetra Pak Benelux BV), Mr Adams Lee (President BenQ Europe) and Mr Allard Bruinshoofd (Head of International Macroeconomic Research Rabobank).
The event was concluded with network drinks and a buffet. The participants were able to network with new connections, meet their counterparts and reconnect with old friends. BOM Foreign Investments organized the event with the Province of Brabant, in cooperation with the Rabobank.

Brabant was a province of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands from 1815 until 1830 and a province of Belgium from 1830 until 1995, when it was split into the Dutch-speaking Flemish Brabant, the French-speaking Walloon Brabant and the bilingual Brussels-Capital Region.
After the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands was created at the Congress of Vienna, consisting of territories which had been added to France by Napoleon: the former Dutch Republic and the Southern Netherlands. In the newly created kingdom, the former French département Dyle became the new province of South Brabant, named after the former Duchy of Brabant. This is why the modern Dutch province of North Brabant is formally still called North Brabant, despite commonly being referred to as Brabant in the Netherlands.
After the Belgian independence of 1830, the Southern Netherlands became independent as Belgium and later also Luxembourg. Brabant became the central province of Belgium, with its capital town Brussels.

End of October the fourth Brabant Investors Day took place at the Provincial building in Den Bosch. Mr Wim van de Donk, Queens Commissioner, officially opened the event with a word of welcome to more than 130 participants. Mr Allard Bruinshoofd, Head of International Macroeconomic Research at Rabobank took the audience on a journey. They travelled from Brabant, to the bunch of grapes (geopgraphical clusters) in which the province is situated in Europe, zooming out to the world and even the universe. The position of the Netherlands and Brabant in the world, the regional competitiveness and the choices that need to be made by the provincial governement was discussed by a panel. Regional politicians about innovation in Active and Healthy Ageing
The annual AAL Forum 2013 (Ambient Assisted Living Forum) takes place in Sweden, September 24-26th. The AAL Forum is the place to be for everyone in Europe playing a role in Ambient Assisted Living and innovation in the field of Active and Healthy Ageing. AAL is about smart ICT solutions and services for independent living and integrated care. During last years AAL Forum in Eindhoven, Noord-Brabant more than 1300 participants exchanged experiences and ideas. The AAL Joint Programme is an important pillar in the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP AHA), initiated by the European Commission.
Introduction
European regions and regional governments play an essential role in the implementation and scaling of smart solutions for independent living and integrated care. All over Europe regional innovation clusters - and regional politicians supporting them - make a difference. A lot of those regional clusters are part of the EIP AHA and recently got awarded by the European Commission with one or more stars.
Why you?
That's why we are organising a side event short before the Grand Opening of the AAL Forum about the regional perspective and the role of politicians. We want to hear your story as a politician representing your region and your regional innovation cluster. In a programme of about 90 minutes we will have a lively debate in which about 10 to 15 regional politicians from all over Europe participate. The European Commission will speak about the importance of regional involvement.
The three main topics are:
• How are you working on innovation on Active and Healthy Ageing and Ambient Assisted Living in your region? Do you have a regional innovation cluster? Do you have an innovation strategy or policy? What barriers do you experience? What is to your opinion the added value of the regional level in Europe?
• What are you doing - as a regional government - to connect your region and innovation cluster to the European level? Are you connected to other regional clusters in Europe? How is your involvement in networks and partnerships like the EIP AHA, Coral, Euregha or Interreg?
• How can the European Commission support your innovation strategy and regional innovation cluster?
Special role of politicians
The event has a high level character with regional ministers, (vice) governors, (vice) mayors and other politicians from a wide diversity of European regions and larger cities. You are the ambassador of your region and your innovation cluster. Most of all you are the ambassador of those state of the art regions in Europe most active in the domain of innovation in Active and Healthy Ageing. The programme will be a showcase of European regional policy on Active and Healthy Ageing.
The programme
The program will be a talk show, meaning there are no speeches but a professional moderator interviews you. You can react to the other politicians around the table and there will be lively interaction. The moderator will make sure that everyone will have his or her say and there is interaction with the audience. The program will be in English language. A selection of short 2-minute video clips - made by you - will be used as part of the program.

In the south of the Netherlands, in the province of Brabant, is a national park called 'Loonse and Drunense Dunes' (Loonse Dunes for short). In this national park are dunes that stem from the last ice age. At first there were no dunes, only woods. In the 1400s that changed as most of the trees were cut down. The dunes then started to form due to the wind. The shapes of the dunes are never the same, as the wind keeps changing the shape by blowing the sand in different directions. The Loonse Dunes are called the 'Sahara of Brabant' and is one of the biggest dunes in Western Europe.
Besides walking on the dunes you can also follow set routes throughout the surrounding forest. The routes are either for biking, horseback riding, walking or specially for dog walkers. The signs on the paths indicate what path you are on. You can rent bikes as well as go horseback riding. It can be busy, though after about 5 pm the crickets and birds can be heard as most day trippers are headed home. The park is vast and one can make their day as active or as inactive as desired.

3. Delta Project and Expo
The Delta Works is a series of construction projects in the southwest of the Netherlands to protect a large area of land around the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta from the sea. The aim of the dams, sluices, and storm surge barriers was to shorten the Dutch coastline, thus reducing the number of dikes that had to be raised.

The Elfstedentocht is an almost 200 kilometres long skating tour which is held both as a speed skating match and a leisure tour. The tour is held at most once a year, only when the natural ice along the entire course is at least 15 centimetres thick.

Hourly trains run from Brussels and (on weekdays) Leuven to Nivelles, stopping at Waterloo and Eigenbrakel/Braine-l'Alleud. From either of these stations it is a 3-kilometre walk to the site. The most convenient way to get to Waterloo from Brussels is the hourly bus to Charleroi operated by TEC. It starts at Brussel-Zuid/Midi station and, after about half an hour, has a stop that is just 300 metres away from the Lion's Mound.
Tourists have been swarming to Waterloo ever since Napoleon's 1815 defeat when one of Europe’s bloodiest ever battles caused 32,000 deaths and changed the course of history. Before visiting, do remember that a battlefield is, after all, just a field. Or in this case many fields – a vast, attractive patchwork of gently undulating cropland dotted with memorials and museums. For the full experience come during one of the battle re-enactments, usually held on the weekend nearest the battle’s anniversary (18 June).
The main battlefield site is known as Lion Hamlet. That's some 5km south of central Waterloo town where the tourist office rents bicycles, opposite the inn at which Wellington stayed – now the modest if well laid-out Musée Wellington.
Other sites are spread considerably further afield.

Both world wars in the 20th century inflicted major damage upon the city.
Because it is the capital of the region of Flemish-Brabant, many governmental institutions are located in Leuven. As the largest and one of the oldest Flemish cities in the immediate vicinity, with a large range of cafés, restaurants, cultural institutions and shopping neighbourhoods, Leuven also attracts people from nearby cities and villages.
Some buildings and landmarks are: the Town Hall in a Brabantian late-Gothic style. In the 19th century, 236 statues were added to the exterior, each representing a prominent local scholar, artist or noble from the city’s history. The reception hall dates from 1750.
The St. Peter's Church (1425–1500) was finished by Jan Keldermans and Matheus de Layens. During the Second World War the church was damaged; during the restoration a Romanesque crypt from the 11th century was found. In the church itself there are several paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries and the grave of Duke Henry I of Brabant. The 50-metre-high tower — which was meant to be 169 metres high, but was never completed — is home to a carillon. The tower was included in UNESCO's list of Belfries of Belgium and France in 1999.
The Linen-Hall, in an early-Gothic style, with baroque addition, is today the University Hall.

Waterloo is a Walloon municipality located in the province of Walloon Brabant, Belgium. On January 1, 2006, Waterloo had a total population of 29,315. The total area is 21.03 km² which gives a population density of 1,394 inhabitants per km².
One quarter of the current registered population are non-Belgian, most of whom work for institutions in Brussels, the capital of the European Union. Waterloo is a Walloon municipality located in the province of Walloon Brabant, Belgium. On January 1, 2006, Waterloo had a total population of 29,315. The total area is 21.03 km² which gives a population density of 1,394 inhabitants per km².
One quarter of the current registered population are non-Belgian, most of whom work for institutions in Brussels, the capital of the European Union. Waterloo is home to St. John's International School, one of the largest and oldest international schools in Belgium. The European headquarters of MasterCard International is also located in Waterloo.
Waterloo's claim to fame is the Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815) between the First French Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Alliance of the Seventh Coalition (the United Kingdom, Prussia, Austria and others), under the main allied commanders, the Duke of Wellington and General von Blücher.
