Getting to Zero for World AIDS Day

Since 1988, December 1 is a day sanctioned by the United Nations as World AIDS Day. The theme we have chosen this year is synonymous with the UN theme – Getting to Zero.

Getting to Zero for us means:

  • Zero new transmissions
  • Zero discrimination of people living with HIV
  • Zero AIDS related deaths

There are many ways you can support this global effort. Get involved with VAC/GMHC’s activities.

Host a Red Dinner

Some dinner tables don’t see any action. It’s sad, but true. So for this year’s World AIDS Day, it’s time for yours to get laid. And all for a good cause and with help from the Victorian AIDS Council/Gay Men's Health Centre.

Simply gather a bunch of your nearest and dearest and host a RED themed dinner party! We’ve plated up delicious recipes on our Facebook page to help you find the right red-themed foods to go with a glass of red.

Register here for one of our Red Dinner Fundraiser packs, containing information, posters and a recipe book with even more culinary delights. And get in early for one of our limited edition packs. Your dinner table will thank you.

The World AIDS Day Memorial Service

An intrinsic part of World AIDS Day activities is our annual Memorial Service. Held at 3:00 pm Sunday 1 December, at the Positive Living Centre (PLC), 51 Commercial Rd, South Yarra, this important event is an opportunity for us to stop and remember all those we have loved and lost since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The Quilt Project Memorial Quilts will be on display at the PLC during the ceremony and throughout AIDS Awareness Week (26 November – 2 December). During the memorial, there will be a special guest speaker and entertainment will be provided.

This event is open to all - admission is free and bookings are not required.

The memorial is a collaborative effort undertaken by the Victorian AIDS Council/Gay Men's Health Centre, Living Positive Victoria, the AIDS Memorial Quilt Project, the Catholic AIDS Ministry, Straight Arrows and Positive Women.

Did someone say coffee?

That’s right! Café’s around Melbourne are getting on board and supporting the cause by using specially marked takeaway cups for the week leading up to World AIDS Day. Stay tuned to check out the list of participating café’s (which we will update weekly) and see if your local is getting in on the action.
