A defense ministry statement said on Wednesday, French special forces have killed two key members of an Islamist militant group.
The statement described the two as "important terrorist chiefs" naming them as Amada Ag Hama and Ibrahim Ag Inawalen.
They were among four killed during an operation on the night of May 17 and 18 in Africa's Sahel region.
The belt region cuts across Africa from Mali to Sudan, separating the Sahara Desert and southern Savannah plains.
France's intervention against Islamists in Mali in 2013 has mutated into a broader, regional mission to hunt down Islamists across the Sahel.

SRF gave you the opportunity to donate towards a Water Well that would be built in Chad with your donations, insha-Allah.
Below is what our contact in this region had reported back to us:
Chad is amongst the poorest countries in the world. 75% of the population live below the poverty line. Health and social problems are degenerating with shortage of food and chronic malnutrition levels. 95% of the population are illiterate. The climate varies especially droughts that have negative effects on the harvest.
The well will be constructed in the Central Sahel region of Chad, the poorest and most dry area of Chad with insufficient rainfall to cultivate crops without irrigation. The livelihood of the people in this region is extremely dangerous, they are very vulnerable and very socially disadvantaged. Many households are headed by women as a result of male mortality and immigration. Women remain marginalized and do all the farming, herding animals, house chores and still go long distances to fetch water and fire wood. The wells in the Sahel region will be the best sadakah one could ever give, the reward will be enormous. The population of the area is predominately Muslims with a few Christians.
The well that will be constructed will be a high density capacity well (not a hand pump well that will dry up after 6 – 9 months). The will be dug about 15 to 25 feet to find water and connected with tanks and pipes. It takes about 7-15 working days to construct if no obstacles are found on the way. Chad is a very dry land and parts of desert therefore the well will be dug using machines as people cannot dig to reach the depth where water can be found.
May Allaah Accept it from all those who donated or were involved.
Visit www.seekingreward.org to donate towards our next water well project bi'ithnillah.

For more than 30 years, the Sahel region of Africa has endured the longest sustained droughts in the world. Millions of people have died as a result of crop failures. Factories and vehicles have created a "sulphate haze" in the atmosphere above North America and Europe. This haze, which reflects sunlight and helps form clouds, has cooled the atmosphere in the northern hemisphere. When it dose rain, the lack of plant life means the water just runs away.
Reason for choosing of this article.
1. I want to know emission from power stations, factories and vehicles have created a "sulphate haze" in the atmosphere true or not.

Weather patterns are becoming more unpredictable in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso. Farmers say the rainy season that once began regularly in June is often delayed and when the rain finally does come the sudden force and volume of water can cause flooding and destroy crops. To help farmers adapt to these changes, a number of IFAD-supported projects are working together with farmers to develop soil and water retention techniques. These efforts have not only helped green nearly 300,000 hectares of drought-prone land but helped farmer actually produce more food despite the decline in rainfall.

STORYLINE:
The United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator called today (20 July) a special meeting to bring to the attention of the media the food crisis in the Sahel Belt.
John Holmes said that Niger was the centre of this crisis, and the country "by far the worse affected". He said that 7 million people and possibly more were suffering from "severe or moderate" food insecurity, and he added that that represented "almost fifty percent of the countries population".
Holmes was concerned that the situation was continuing to deteriorate and was becoming even more severe since he visited the country a few weeks ago.
In second place Holmes said that the country which was suffering the most after Niger was Chad, and particularly the western regions. He pointed out that around 1.6 million people were affected and that represented about sixty percent of the households in these affected regions of the Sahel belt.
He also noted that half the total number of children suffering from "severe, acute malnutrition" in the whole of Chad were living this Sahel belt.
Holmes emphasized that he thought the overall humanitarian response had done a "reasonable job" so far but he added that it still needed to be "stepped up considerably further, as I say, if we are going to avert a real humanitarian catastrophe."

Mali, 11 January 2013. At the request of Malian authorities and the UN, France launched what would become the largest operation outside the coalition since the end of the war in Algeria. Named after the small African wild cat of the Sahel region, Operation Serval deployed more than 4,500 men and women. Their mission: to put a stop to terrorist-led attacks, restore Mali’s territorial integrity and protect some 5,000 French nationals. Operation Serval was a tremendous air-land campaign, a huge logistical challenge and an incredible joint forces manoeuvre. Join us as we look back at the campaign with land forces and the Serval Brigade, armed with the 3rd Mechanised Brigade, the “Monsabert Brigade”. Its motto: “A single goal: Victory”.

UN Envoy: Improving Women's Lives Would Boost Sahel's Development

Improving access to education, healthcare and jobs for women in the arid Sahel region of Africa could play an important part in rolling back poverty in one of the world's most underdeveloped areas, the U.N. special envoy to the region said.
Hiroute Guebre Sallassie, the U.N. secretary general's special envoy to the Sahel, said the traditional role of women - including low levels of education and participation in the formal economy - was an obstacle to development.
"Without a fundamental restructuring of the role of women, the Sahel risks delaying its legitimate aspirations...in terms of development," Sallassie told a news conference late on Monday.
UN Women, a United Nations agency focused on gender equality, has suggested that the impoverished countries of the Sahel are amongst the worst performers in the emancipation and equal rights of women.
In Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger and Senegal more than 90 percent of women had no formal education, it said in a report whose regional findings Sallassie presented in the Senegalese capital Dakar. The report was first released in April.
While globally women are in school for an average of 7.3 years, compared to 8.2 years for men, women in Sahel countries received fewer than three years of formal education on average.
In Burkina Faso, that fell to just 0.3 years.
Men in the Sahel region are also educated less than the global norm, enrolling in school for an average of fewer than five years. Still, men's average school attendance was up to three times as long as their female counterparts, depending on the country.
The report called for a virtuous circle of decent jobs, social services and government policy prioritising education and equality.
Lack of economic independence had repercussions on women's rights. Some 69 percent of women in Senegal said, for example, they do not have the final say over their own healthcare.
Female genital mutilation remains common in many countries in the mostly Muslim region.
Nicole Gakou, the president of the union of female business leaders in Senegal, said that large-scale financing needed to be made available to female entrepreneurs to allow them to undertake bolder projects.
"Women today are confined to everything that is 'micro': micro-credit, micro-businesses," she said. "We need other things ... substantial financing. Funding for long-term projects."

Violent extremism in the Sahel region has dominated the news since Boko Haram kidnapped 276 Nigerian schoolgirls one year ago. But the complex dynamics that are compounding the region’s security emergencies are often left out of the headlines. Poor governance, rapid population growth, and environmental pressures, like food insecurity, climate change, and poor natural resource management, all contribute to chronic crises and eroding the region’s resilience to shocks and stressors. These interlinked challenges require integrated responses.
In a day-long event that looked beyond the headlines and at the challenges ahead, speakers from the region and US-based experts engaged in solutions-oriented policy dialogues that addressed demographic trends, reproductive health, food security, and peacebuilding. Additional cross-cutting themes throughout the discussion included gender, youth, and health.

Algeria and the Sahel in the Arab Spring Aftermath
Following the Arab Spring protests in 2011, North Africa experienced one disruptive event after another, which spilled over into the Sahel. Tunisia’s dictator fell and the country held elections, Egypt overthrew Mubarak only to have the Muslim Brotherhood led government ousted, the United States intervened in Libya which has since devolved into an ongoing armed conflict, and jihadists took over tw

Mega Drought is a prolonged drought lasting two decades or longer.
Megadroughts have historically led to the mass migration of humans away from drought affected lands, resulting in a significant population decline from pre-drought levels. They are suspected of playing a primary role in the collapse of several pre-industrial civilizations, including the Anasazi of the North American Southwest, the Khmer Empire of Cambodia, the Mayan of Mesoamerica, the Tiwanaku of Bolivia, and the Yuan Dynasty of China.
The African Sahel region in particular has suffered multiple megadroughts throughout history, with the most recent lasting from approximately 1400 AD to 1750 AD. North America experienced at least four megadroughts during the Medieval Warm Period.

Following the Arab Spring protests in 2011, North Africa experienced one disruptive event after another, which spilled over into the Sahel. Tunisia’s dictator fell and the country held elections, Egypt overthrew Mubarak only to have the Muslim Brotherhood led government ousted, the United States intervened in Libya which has since devolved into an ongoing armed conflict, and jihadists took over two-thirds of Mali which they later lost in a French intervention. Yet one country, Algeria, has remained relatively stable while simultaneously pushing aggressively for diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts.
New America is pleased to welcome Hannah Armstrong, a writer and New America International Security Program fellow who is based in Algeria and who has seven years of experience researching North African and Sahel political and security dynamics, for a discussion of Algeria’s muscular foreign policy in the region and why we should not expect an Algerian Arab Spring anytime soon.
