Russian forces arrived in Pakistan on Friday for its first ever joint military drill that begins on Saturday, a military spokesperson said.
"A contingent of Russian ground forces arrived Pakistan for first ever Pak-Russian joint exercise," tweeted Lt. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa, the director-general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces.
The military exercise in which around 200 Russian army men are participating, was earlier reported to have been cancelled in the wake of the killing of 18 soldiers in the September 18 terror attack on an Indian army base in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Friendship-2016 drills will take place at Pakistan Army's High Altitude School in Rattu, Gilgit-Baltistan
The two-week military drill named 'Friendship 2016' is the first between the two former Cold War rivals. It will continue till October 7, according to the Pakistan media.
Militaries of the two countries have not revealed much about the drill. But it is said to take place in "mountainous areas".
The exercise is a signal that Moscow and Islamabad are deepening their military cooperation.
"This obviously indicates a desire on both sides to broaden defense and military-technical cooperation," Pakistan's ambassador to Russia, Qazi Khalilullah, told a Russian news agency last week.

The key stage of the "Caucasus-2016" war games concluded on Friday at the Opuk firing range in Crimea, Russia.
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu made an inspection tour at the scene to watch the performance of command and all the officers and men of the participating forces in the largest tactical drill this year.
During the Friday drill, joint forces conducted combatting imaginary enemy forces, assaulting ground and air targets by air force and landing operations by frogman units and paratroops.
Two long-range missile systems together with Pantsir-S1 fired at the air targets simulating the entire spectrum of air attacks at various altitudes and speeds.
"Many services and arms, including air forces, special forces and the artilleries, took part in this exercise. They even employed the actual combat experience attained during the battles in Syria. As it can be seen, the key stage of the drill has concluded. It is necessary that we take time to gather the data for analysis," said Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia.
The maneuver is meant to assess the readiness and capacity of the Russian armed forces in safeguarding its national interest in the southwest part of the country, instead of "flexing military muscles," according to Russian Defense Ministry official spokesman Igor Konashenkov.
"Of course, it is the first time a drill of such a large scale is conducted in the Southern military district. But I would like to emphasize that Russia conducts such military exercise of this scale every year, and the tradition has been around for a few years. As for the question if Russia is displaying anything in particular, we are not displaying anything, but to optimize the combat tasks. At the same time, we hope to maintain and reinforce Russia's armed forces and their combat capacity," he said.
Pantsir-S1 is a combined short-to-medium range surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery weapon system.

Chinese and Russian military forces conducted a joint island landing drill on Sunday as the Joint Sea 2016 drill entered the fourth day in the on-sea-operation phase.
The soldiers were divided into two groups no matter which country they are from -red as attacking force and blue as defensing force. The red force gathered at the designated waters at 08:00 on Sunday morning. Several fighter jets then took off and performed simulated bombing of the target island.
Upon the arrival of two landing ships from the joint force, over 60 soldiers left the ships and headed for the beachhead on speedboats; meanwhile, several amphibious armored vehicles went into the sea and fired at the blue force on the island. The units successfully reached the beachhead at 09:00 on Sunday morning, took vantage positions and opened a corridor at the beach for other units.
Over 10 commandos then descended from two helicopters to an area between two highlands on the island. Frogman unit hiding in the rocks in the southern part of the island also launched assault from the rear and completed encirclement of the enemy's headquarter.
A secret bunker of the blue force suddenly started to shoot at the red force. The red force immediately called for backup and soon destroyed the bunker with artillery. The joint assault team quickly went into the woods in mountainous areas and pushed forward.

Soldiers of the mountain infantry brigade of Russia's Southern Military District arrived to the Cherat training ground in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region, Friday, to participate in the first joint Russian-Pakistani military drills under the title 'Druzhba-2016' (Friendship-2016).
Russian servicemen were met at a Rawalpindi airport by representatives of the Pakistani Armed Forces and the military attache at the Embassy of the Russian Federation. The Russian servicemen were then taken to Cherat, where they were greeted by a local military orchestra.

Military parade
A military parade (square bashing in British military slang) is a formation of soldiers whose movement is restricted by close-order manoeuvring known as drilling or marching. The military parade is now almost entirely ceremonial, though soldiers from time immemorial up until the late 19th century fought in formation. Massed parades may also hold a role for propaganda purposes, being used to exhibit the apparent military strength of one's nation.
History
The terminology comes from the tradition of close order formation combat, in which soldiers were held in very strict formations as to maximise their combat effectiveness. Formation combat was used as an alternative to mêlée combat, and required strict discipline in the ranks and competent officers. As long as their formations could be maintained, regular troops could maintain a significant advantage over less organised opponents.
Although the firepower of breechloading rifles and machine guns long ago rendered close formations in battle suicidal, modern armies still use parades for ceremonial purposes or in non-combat environments for their efficiency, ease of organization and encouragement of discipline. Roughly synonymous are "drill" and "march". The English word "drill" is of Middle Dutch origin, dating from the 16th century drill of the Dutch army of prince Maurice of Orange, which was widely copied throughout Europe at the time.

The soldiers were divided into two groups no matter which country they are from -red as attacking force and blue as defensing force. Pakistan: First ever Russian-Pakistani joint military drills kick off in Cherat
Soldiers of the mountain infantry brigade of Russia's Southern Military District arrived to the Cherat training ground in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region, Friday, to participate in the first joint Russian-Pakistani military drills under the title 'Druzhba-2016' (Friendship-2016). Russian servicemen were met at a Rawalpindi airport by representatives of the Pakistani Armed Forces and the military attache at the Embassy of the Russian Federation. Russian forces arrived in Pakistan on Friday for its first ever joint military drill that begins on Saturday, a military spokesperson said.
"A contingent of Russian ground forces arrived Pakistan for first ever Pak-Russian joint exercise," tweeted Lt. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa, the director-general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces.
The military exercise in which around 200 Russian army men are participating, was earlier reported to have been cancelled in the wake of the killing of 18 soldiers in the September 18 terror attack on an Indian army base in Jammu and Kashmir.

The two-week military drill named 'Friendship 2016' is the first between the two former Cold War rivals. It will continue till October 7, according to the Pakistan media.
Militaries of the two countries have not revealed much about the drill. But it is said to take place in "mountainous areas".
The exercise is a signal that Moscow and Islamabad are deepening their military cooperation.
"This obviously indicates a desire on both sides to broaden defense and military-technical cooperation," Pakistan's ambassador to Russia, Qazi Khalilullah, told a Russian news agency last week.

"Many services and arms, including air forces, special forces and the artilleries, took part in this exercise. They even employed the actual combat experience attained during the battles in Syria. As it can be seen, the key stage of the drill has concluded. It is necessary that we take time to gather the data for analysis," said Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia.
The maneuver is meant to assess the readiness and capacity of the Russian armed forces in safeguarding its national interest in the southwest part of the country, instead of "flexing military muscles," according to Russian Defense Ministry official spokesman Igor Konashenkov.
"Of course, it is the first time a drill of such a large scale is conducted in the Southern military district. But I would like to emphasize that Russia conducts such military exercise of this scale every year, and the tradition has been around for a few years. As for the question if Russia is displaying anything in particular, we are not displaying anything, but to optimize the combat tasks. At the same time, we hope to maintain and reinforce Russia's armed forces and their combat capacity," he said.
Pantsir-S1 is a combined short-to-medium range surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery weapon system.

Upon the arrival of two landing ships from the joint force, over 60 soldiers left the ships and headed for the beachhead on speedboats; meanwhile, several amphibious armored vehicles went into the sea and fired at the blue force on the island. The units successfully reached the beachhead at 09:00 on Sunday morning, took vantage positions and opened a corridor at the beach for other units.
Over 10 commandos then descended from two helicopters to an area between two highlands on the island. Frogman unit hiding in the rocks in the southern part of the island also launched assault from the rear and completed encirclement of the enemy's headquarter.
A secret bunker of the blue force suddenly started to shoot at the red force. The red force immediately called for backup and soon destroyed the bunker with artillery. The joint assault team quickly went into the woods in mountainous areas and pushed forward.

This created the foundation for mutual reproaches, misunderstanding, and crises in the future,” Russian President Vladimir Putin told Bild last month.

U.S. Marines with Marines Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1), U.S. Marines with 1st Battalion 11th Marines conduct a CH-53 Day Battle Drill Exercise during Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course 1-17 (WTI) at Fire Base Burt, Calif., Oct. 1, 2016. WTI is a seven week training event hosted by Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1) cadre which emphasizes operational integration of the six functions of Marine Corps aviation in support of a Marine Air Ground Task Force. MAWTS-1 provides standardized advanced tactical training and certification of unit instructor qualifications to support Marine aviation Training and Readiness and assists in developing and employing aviation weapons and tactics.

More than 70 Russian army commandos have arrived in Pakistan to participate in the first-ever joint military exercises between the two countries, officials announced Friday.
A Pakistani army spokesman said the two-week-long drill is scheduled to begin on Saturday and conclude on October 10.
The exercises, called “Friendship 2016,” will involve around 200 military personnel of both the countries and take place in Cherat, a security official told VOA.

An air-defense military drill was conducted by the 38th Group Army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army recently.
Different from previous drills, this time the troops were targeted by unmanned attack planes. The air strike hit the command post directly.
The shoulder-launched missile unit, together with the antiaircraft-gun unit, returned fire to enemy planes and destroyed all the targets. Then all the soldiers transferred themselves to the second position.
Radar found a low-altitude raid by other planes. The air defense force instantly re-struck the enemy planes through newly-invented missile carriers.
"The drill was completely consistent with real battlefield. We insisted on breaking through in difficult and important aspects. We have explored fighting ways of resisting many targets and using different kinds of missiles at the same time," said Lyu Qi, chief of staff of the antiaircraft-gun unit.
The drill lasted for three days and three nights. The air defense force also conducted seven rounds of fire strike at night in order to check the troops' abilities to get information on air strikes, to intercept enemy planes and to break out of multi-dimensional encirclements from different height.

Moscow considers NATO’s activity in neighboring countries provocative, and its concerns have been borne out by America’s military support to the governments of former Soviet states with pronounced anti-Moscow leanings. In, arguably, the hottest interstate military crisis of the past decade, American-trained Georgian troops clashed with Russian forces in 2008 after Tbilisi shelled the South Ossetian city of Tskhinvali in an attack that killed Russian peacekeepers along with hundreds of civilians.
The crisis eventually de-escalated and former US-educated Georgian leader Mikhail Saakashvili fled the country, where he is still wanted for questioning in up to 10 criminal cases, including those involving brutal crackdowns on opposition protesters and money embezzlement. Nevertheless, Tbilisi has stayed the course in seeking NATO membership. Earlier on Wednesday, Stoltenberg said that NATO was going to develop further cooperation with Georgia in the Black Sea.
NATO intensified its military activities in Europe after the eruption of the Ukrainian crisis and Russia’s reunification with Crimea in 2014. Last year, the alliance carried out a number of massive military drills including “Trident Juncture 2015,” the biggest since 2002, which included 36,000 international troops, as well as more than 60 warships and about 200 aircraft from 30 states.
Russia has long called on NATO to refrain from expanding into Eastern Europe, saying that such moves have the potential to destabilize the security situation in the region. Nonetheless, NATO has accepted 12 eastern European countries since 1999 and now wants to take in one more – Montenegro.
“We have not overcome Europe’s division: Twenty-five years ago the Berlin Wall fell, but Europe’s division was not overcome, invisible walls simply moved to the East. This created the foundation for mutual reproaches, misunderstanding, and crises in the future,” Russian President Vladimir Putin told Bild last month.
