PEP is a one-month course of drugs that can prevent HIV infection if started within 72 hours of exposure.

How does PEP work?

It takes a few days for HIV to establish itself in the body after exposure. If PEP is given at this time, it can help the body's immune system stop the infected cells from multiplying. The infected cells then die in a short time frame.

PEP uses the same drugs used to treat people with HIV.

There is no cure for HIV once it has established itself in the body.
